A host of quality control related issues plagued anime figures last weekend, beginning with Amiami recalling an Atelier Ryza figure, to an Albedo figure by Fallen Angel Studio seemingly exploding while on display. Meanwhile, a number of other figures had their production cancelled.

Resin figures usually explode when uncured resin gets trapped inside. It still continues to cure overtime, but it expands and as a threshold reaches, it explodes

Well assuming what the owner said is true and he isn't making things up, I'd say there's a likelihood. More than often the figure just cracks and splits open, not literally exploding, but i won't write off that possibility.

I saw someone posted an old Charizard figure, that had exploded, on Reddit. A clear substance was in it.

that 2B was probably canceled because it is already available as a STL file. I saw one video 3D printing and painting it.

Commerically produced resin statues use two part epoxy resin. Solid cast parts do not need drain holes as it is a chemical and not light curing process. Rotocasted parts are hollow and should have holes for gas expansion. But bases are usually not hollow as they need to be solid to support the figure. There can be uncured or poorly cured resin when the two parts are not mixed throughly or the ratio is not correct (not enough hardener). I doubt that the Albedo base “exploded”. Most likely poorly cured or uncured resin fractured and fell apart because the base and the figure look quite top heavy and unbalanced.
@EXkurogane
@EXkurogane 2 күн бұрын
In most cases, yes, because casting is more cost effective and faster. Light cure resin is expensive. But if the model is hollow they will need drainage because there is always risk of of uncured resin left behind releasing volatile gas, which is the root of the problem here. I do think the base is hollow in the case of that albedo because part of it is polystone from what i heard, which is even heavier.

The Prinz Heinrich figure looks actually good, but I guess they should have done a regular 1/7 figure like other companies do example Alter. A couple of missiles, a cute character and a boat background if you desire a "deluxe version" and that's it. The problem with the portrait versions are that they do not fill well on cabinets, they require too much space and look weird once displayed along with other figures, even if the character looks great this figure I had to skip it so bad x). Hope to see again this figure as a regular one soon :) Ah, I think nowadays the resin market is starting to be very competitive and not because of quality. Before you could see 2-3 figures every week, now it's almost daily you see one. I think in a couple of years (you should have noticed various figures are cheaper than years ago) some materials should be replaced. I mean I don't mind having a PVC non official figure if it is a character I like. It doesn't have to be a expensive piece imo :)

Are we sure these companies are using resin printing as a manufacturing process instead of ordinary resin casting by hand? In the latter case, they'd often use polyurethane resin which should be fully self-curing. Usually, they'd also use a pressure/vacuum pot/chamber to remove air bubbles if the figures are cast by hand. Does somebody know where to find information regarding the manufacturing process those companies use?

Regardless of whether they were printed or casted, the fact remains that trapped and uncured resin is responsible for the blowup. Well, all I had on my computer was 3D slicer software so i figured that it was the best way to use that as a demo on what I meant by the importance of drainage. In mass production, usually casting is preferred because it is much faster, unless you have a fleet of 100 printers maybe, which some companies are actually doing this, because 3D printers are cheaper than the steel flasks used in injection molding. The liquid rubber casts we hobbyists use are not durable and can only be reused a few times before they lose their dimensional accuracy. Trapped and uncured material can happen in casting if proper procedures or steps are not being followed so in the end the manufacturer is mainly to blame for it.

I already have my doubts about resin (was seriously considering getting a resin 3D printer at one point until I read about the curing process and the smell), unfortunately it's what we have for low-print-run garage kits until we find a material closer to injection-molded plastic that you don't need to be an industrial scale factory to afford.
@EXkurogane
@EXkurogane 2 күн бұрын
The smell is almost nonexistent for standard, generic resin. The ones that smell bad are more specialized ones like ABS-resin, which is tough and can survive small drops but twice as expensive - you need proper ventilation. Meanwhile water-washable resin is not as durable and extremely toxic, not to mention some people tend to be careless with it because they are just using water to clean. The problem isn't the 3D printing process itself but the work after printing, from cleaning with 99% IPA to final curing and proper chemical waste disposal. Injection molding is usually for mass-producing the same parts. You 3D print whatever you want, make molds from it with liquid rubber or silicone then reuse the molds to inject chemical cure AB-resin. Similar workflow as the recasting method bootleg manufacturers use. You can't hollow out an injection molded figure of course.

I have this Albedo, knock on wood I hope mine doesn't explode. I've seen similar with my own resin prints with poor drainage but seems to be mostly bulging due to uncured resin.

Currently I don't. The printing i do are mostly to make props for anime figures, such as dioramas for figure photography. That berserker figure was actually supposed to be an "accessory" next to an Ilya figure. I think you will need to search for people who sell 3D printing services

Well my experiences were mixed. I had an EMS parcel disappear after arriving in my country - my local postal service should be the one responsible for it, but Amiami was the one who helped me claim insurance from Japan Post where i got a full refund. That was great. However, fast forward a few years, even after the pandemic, figure purchases were stuck for weeks, never shipped out, even when I paid for the more expensive EMS or DHL in order to get it fast in the first place. That was the final straw, though I have heard they got better by now but I mainly focus on hunting for bargains in their sales and preowned section, rather than preordering new figures.
