imo too many figures look tacky and cluttered in a room. looks like a messy elementary kids room and you cant admire most of them cuz of it. it looks more appealing and clean and stands out more when you have a handful of the best figures that you love. i only get figures i absolutely love and cannot live without and ignore 90% of the others that i just like or kinda like, i think to myself could i live without it and if its a yes then it doesnt get purchased, plus new figures are always releasing constantly so dont fall for FOMO. got rid of most of my collection and scaled down to the absolute favorites that i can admire all the time. imo for all collectors, you have to ask yourself is it a want/nice to have or is it a favorite/"need" that you will look forward to looking at everyday

I think downsizing is great. I’m coming from a perspective of being an old person that has too much stuff. I keep my fairly large video game collection, all the many consoles and the few (relatively speaking) figures in one room. While I’m happy with most of what I have and enjoying looking at all my things, I now think about what is most important to me and buy 90% less than I used to. I just started collecting more figures and I wish I had all the money back I wasted over the decades on other stuff. I see young people getting into hobbies where they spend thousands in the first year of collecting figures or whatever and wonder if they will regret that not too far down the road. I was the same way. You can’t know these things until you’ve lived them unfortunately. Your advice of not going rabid at the very beginning is good advice. I know what it’s like to want to catch up with people that have been collecting for years and there’s so much you want. I hope someone will take your advice to heart! Thanks for the video!

Especially the boxes that are not see through/transparent plastic. That way you can fold the boxes nicely into something like an empty suitcase you only use for traveling and you still get to keep the display box which has some decent value! Also boxes help with proving authenticity A LOT. it’s helped me when I almost got scammed before.

As someone who tries very hard to just not have a lot of Stuff in general, my hobbies are the one area where I really fail at this somewhat spectacularly. XD Funnily enough, you caught me in the middle of downsizing my figures, which was prompted by a different video by another figure KZbinr I stumbled on, also about downsizing. My general approach is the Marie Kondo approach, which seems to work well enough--I've been fortunate enough that space was less of an issue than access to a local IKEA--and looking over what I do and don't want to keep, I want other people to enjoy my "don't" pile as much as I do my "keep" pile. That said, I have a serious plushie problem, and you will pry their cute, stuffed bodies from my cold, dead fingers. XDDD

Throwing away boxes has made such a huge impact with how my room looks. I do miss having them but its something that has to be done especially when I do not plan on selling anything for long. Youre right about considering how fragile the figure is. I run it through my mind on how Im going to pack the figure without the box when I do plan on moving. Another option is to cut out the clamshells. When I threw away my St Louis box, I kept the clamshell of the airship and just cut out the edges.

Personally, I am very happy about this video. I like collecting figures myself, but I have a rather small collection. Another reason why I love following people on KZbin who have larger collections is that I really enjoy watching unboxings of figures that I like. However, I think that "healthy collecting" (and for me this also includes downsizing) should be a topic more often. After all, you shouldn't forget how much money and space this hobby takes up. Dealing with this realistically and also selling figures when they no longer fit (for whatever reason) is therefore an important topic in my opinion :)

9:48 Agree. People tend to realize that they want to branch out more, especially as they find out new places to research and buy figures. I think moderation is important but not forcing yourself into a box for purchases is the way to go. Building a space with multiple franchises/characters you find very meaningful is very rewarding. For me (I only buy Evangelion figures and have lost interest in a lot of other IPs) I do think in the back of my mind that I will slow down or halt completely someday, I have periods of months where I don't buy and focus more on improving the rest of my living and collection space. It's very easy to get wrapped up in something you enjoy to the point where you make regrettable purchases. I think even if you are like me and cannot commit to other franchises, being honest about "what needs to go" is extremely important. I think that downsizing has a negative connotation because of how intimidating it is to let go of something you either once enjoyed or once thought you enjoyed. Not to mention a lot of collectors do not like the idea of decreasing a chunk of their collection because it's like having a chunk taken out of something you built, even if it doesn't actually spark joy. Nice video as always!

I really like the concept of downsizing, I feel it makes a space look clean. As it’s very easy to get overwhelmed with the amount of figures consuming a space especially if you have multiple collecting hobbies were space is extremely limited. (I collect figures, Pokémon cards, manga, and the occasional plush). Though since I have a hard time declutterring I usually find limiting myself in what I buy to begin with helps manage the amount of stuff coming into my space. Congrats on the move!
@juliuskazunaga89162 ай бұрын
What you did is the right thing 👏. Me and my friend have this one rule that we do before buying a figure and that is asking ourselves if we love that character. If we just like the design, we discuss and tell each other our opinion. This can help with deciding if it's really worth buying it. I have around 7 scale figures and I love them so much because they make me remember the fun times. I hope you and your girlfriend have a smooth time moving out to a new place. Godspeed!

Hey, first of all great video. Downsizing is a topic that is ever present in our community, be it as a sword above or head or just as a method for refocusing for preventing burnout or falling in love with your collection anew. I feel like I'm very lucky since I never had to much problems with this up until now. When I got into figure collecting sometime in 2019 I did know burnout from amassing too much too fast was a very real issue. Aditionally to that I never had the most money or space so I really had to think about how to approach this if I were to approach it at all. This first resulted in me making a game plan. I don't typically have the money to buy a figure and then downsize later on so limitation on ordering had to be the way to go (which let's be real is just downsizing beforehand). I thought about applying the typical limitations (similar to you only one figure per character or a set time period to think about ordering), but that didn't really work for me though I tried. So the way I tend to go is not per limitatations, but the other way around. I'm asking myself, if I like the figure enough to take responsibility for everything that comes with it. That is primarily the financial aspect (like does it fit into the budget I have). But more important is even if it doesn't: Do I have the commitment to go through the shipping and taxation process, to display it in the best way possible for it, to dust it and to store its box properly and to pack it up and move with it given the case? You'd be surprised just how many figures you can get rid off beforehand with that thinking. Buying a figure is a fast thing but caring for it in earnest (especially since it's such an expensive hobby) is a whole other ordeal. I only want to go through that for the ones I really like. The only restriction I have in place is that I need to have some personal connection to the character. I don't collect OC's at all and it is one of my biggest nightmares to own a figure then sometime later consuming the source material and realizing that I do not like the character at all. In total, my method relies on a lot of contemplating and it did happen before that I missed preorder deadlines or a particular good offer was already gone. I also did overpay for figures already. But hey, that's the game. You win some you lose some. All that being said I'm also not immune to impulse purchasing now and then or to collect sets of characters, but I feel like as long as I make those decisions conciously, that behavior is absolutely fine. My collection is not big at all, but I'm attached to it as well as the hobby and I'd like to be here for time to come. Good luck with the move. I only moved with figures once and that was already not easy. I can't really imagine it with a collection the size of yours. So take your time and best of wishes.

The box point is huge. If you are willing to toss the box, you are likely locked down on keeping it in your collection. Only exceptions are if you plan on moving in the next months/years, or it's a large and delicate figure (for me, it's my Creation Studio 1/4 Samus). For articulated figures like Nendos and Figmas, trust me, you feel A LOT better when you toss the boxes. They come with baggies anyways and all the stuff for them fit in containers better than the boxes.

Sometimes over a year after the anime stopped airing (frieren is the exception) therefore the relevance & sentiment fades pretty quick. But for figures from Persona, Xenoblade, Nier, FE, etc. they will always be sought after & appreciated years from now, and that’s based on my 13 years of collecting

I will say that I personally don’t understand buying something you don’t want. I don’t know if for me it’s I’m a hoarder or don’t wanna feel like I wasted the money but I’ve never bought something and felt like I’ve wanted to get rid of it. After all I bought it, so there was clearly a reason why I wanted it. Especially for something as expensive as figures. Though I am very, very picky about the stuff I like, so if I like something I’m usually head over heels for it. And it’s obscure that if I do find something I’m just happy I found something. Like…they only have made one figure from Shugo Chara and it’s a nendoroid of Amu. I’m really hoping the new anime will get them to make more. I’m begging. I want an amulet spade figure so badly…
@ZuccoFigures2 ай бұрын
Well don't want and no longer want are different things. I never bought a figure I straight up disliked and my intentions are to keep them but for multiple reasons my stance can change. Also I don't think it's a big deal for someone like me since I make unboxings and reviews. I'm down to take a chance or risk on a figure I'm not 100% sold on if I think it would be interesting to review. Plus the amount of figures in my apartment are about to essentially double with the move coming up. Eventually somethings gotta go in my case.

Thus far, the only ones that I have or plan to get rid of are ones where I got a replacement for. There is currently one of those on my shelf and two boxed up. I applied a pretty heavy filter on what I allow myself to buy fairly early, so there aren't many of characters that I don't care much about. There is one more figure I'm fairly sure I'm going to get rid of eventually but need a suitable replacement

i've been collecting for just over a year and i'm finally reaching the point where i want to downsize for the first time (2 scales and a bunch of merch). not because i'm out of space, but because i find it difficult to display it all in a way i enjoy. i found making a 'favourites' list really helpful in deciding what i truly like, especially considering all the small trinkets/trading figures i own. i *think* i have a better idea of the things i prefer to collect now so hopefully that makes it easier to decide on future purchases!

Downsizing is so awesome really. It really helps look at what you own and what you still really love and there's no shame in selling the things you aren't that obsessed over any more. I definitely bought figures on a whim that I've never opened so I definitely have to downsize this year.

I got into this hobby earlier in the year and I bought many figures, enough that can be worth as much as a new car, and I still have most in the boxes. I'm planning to move eventually so I don't want to take too many out of boxes yet. I also got into this hobby thinking it can be fun and sustainable if I get good money back for figures I no longer will keep. That was what motivated me to buy so much and also Tokyo Golden Week sale happened a little while after I was getting into the hobby, so I started to buy a lot, and then continued when I saw new figures I was interested in.

Honestly it’s always been a scary topic for me because of my love of the two franchises I mainly collect for: Dragon Ball and Gundam. They take up so much space but I also love them both so much to let go of any. I definitely need to think about the possibility for the future though, as space is looking ROUGH right now 💀. At the very least I’ve been doing what you mentioned in the video and started collecting for the express purpose of getting a particular image for scenes I enjoy or media I’ve recently consumed in small doses. Thanks for the discussion!

Restrictions is always how I've done it, and when I change restrictions is when I downsize. My last change was no figures without diorama bases unless they don't need a base (freestanding) or just don't have one, because it isn't needed (also freestanding). I believe this will cut down my current collection by more than a third.

I'm currently in the process of acquiring a new apartment, and one of my first purchases will be a display case... my current room needed several shelves built for figures I print and paint. Also, you should play Kiseki. Just start with Trails now, no idea how long it'll take to get English version of the remakes in West. And how fast entire trilogy will take them...

I'm thankful that I only get things I'm passionate in as I buy mostly gaming related figures which almost always balloon in price. To me my justification is saving money by paying now as opposed to scalper prices later, but that's becoming less and less of the reality so I question how much I need to pre-order now.

@jantrada88242 ай бұрын
I've started collecting a decade ago, mostly scales and a couple of nendos but even then they add up to fewer than 30... even now I'm still very picky about the figures I'd buy or PO. I want to make sure I know the character's source material, or at least adore the design, the figure has a nice pose, and it comes from a reputable brand like Myethos. That said, I can just throw all of my strict criteria out of the window if there's a figure of a sentimental character from my younger years like Suigintou from Rozen Maiden. I also tend to steer clear of the newer seasonal anime characters since I'm not sure if I'll still like them in a couple of years. Even if I'm sure I really like them, I'll just get a prize figure that doesn't hurt my bank or space

So I'd gladly make some room for them.^^

Downsizing for me was selling off the cheaper prize figures, nendoroids and figmas I bought, to focus on scale figures that I wanted even more! All of that is exactly why I'm kinda picky about which figures/characters I buy. Sure, are there a lot of times where I see sexy figures of sexy characters that I don't really know, and wish to buy them just because they look great (for example, Azur Lane, Blue Archive etc.)? Yes. But do I need them and waste time and space on them, when I could buy a figure of some character(s) that I actually like, know and care about, even though their figure may not always be AS big and intricate as those from Azur Lane and Blue Archive? Absolutely.
@Renni_Jay8 күн бұрын
I know downsizing is smart for sure...But since I mostly collect prize figures that's not as big a situation. Prize figures don't usually cost a lot, and the after market is either dirt cheap or crazy expensive (Looking at the 300 dollar Izuru Kamakura FuRyu prize figure) and I also just personally...I don't like getting rid of my stuff cause it makes me sad xD;; I *know* they're inanimate objects but I feel bad, and I genuinely just love my figures, so I'd rather keep em...If I *needed* to get rid of them for space, I don't know, I guess I'd pack em up in cardboard boxes and just...Keep them in there...I know I have some figures locked away and hidden in various doom boxes that I'll find eventually...

As someone who started collecting figures I wanted for years during covid, I quickly filled up 3 detolfs worth of scales, but I only have 2 detolfs so a good chunk are in my closet due to lack of space. With newer figures coming in like Mio scale, Eunie Figma, and Mash Pekora, I’m going through my list of ones I could part with. It’s hard not cause of attachment but the hassle of actually trying to sell them, especially figures that are not sought after anymore. SquareEnix 2B DX figure? Easy sell. Sold very quickly. Tamamo Lancer? Still trying…

I used to buy figures of every series I liked, but recently I did a great trade-off technique instead. I collector to Fire Emblem and FF7 because I adore them, and for other series I like but can’t justify a scale, I started collecting acrylic stands instead. Its learning how to properly sell in the market makes it easier to downsize and not fear of buying new stuff. Also if you think about not getting back what you paid for then you should not be collecting figures because is something that is expected to loose some of its value if your concern with money. Ofc there are some that can gain some profit out of but thats usually for unopened figures and with boxes like you said. Omg no not Marth 😢 His Emblem is so cool to look at but yes theres alot of FE figures, Marth is just so iconic. I havent bought figures in a while, it has slowed down quite a bit for me but its just means I'm putting my money elsewhere like manga games and art books. Its hard dividing what to spend on and only able to either alot on one hobby or splitting by hobbies 😣 Im just missing a Samus and Kirby figures

I think it's pretty unsustainable to collect without purging things you dont need or want anymore. I also throw away the blisters of boxes of figures i know im never getting rid of (the bishoujo horror collection for example, that will never leave my collection). It's good way to keep the boxes without keeping the boxes. That way if you move or end up selling things you have the box and you can just wrap the figure in bubble wrap. As someone with very limited space because i live in a small apartment and don't want my house to look like an episode of that show hoaders, it's ok to just keep what you love and sell what you dont and throw away boxes.

When I started getting into figures I knew I would keep all the boxes & have to accommodate for them. The main reason: not only the collector in me but to prove they are ligit figures & not bootleg. When I see listings for figures with no boxes I don't buy them based on the fact that it could end up being a fake. Think of the closest filled with boxes as an insurance policy 😂
