As us old school inhabitants of KZbin come back here again as a thanksgiving tradition, with the knowledge that the channel hasn’t uploaded in over a year, as the creators have personal affairs to deal with, this is still a time to be thankful for the old memories they’ve brought to us. The fake-outs where they riff on videos that point them out, the teenagers trying weird accents, the save-scumming on 90’s games, the guest stars, Billy, Electrical Beast’s temporary rise to Let’s Play fame, and everyone else who either learned from their mistakes and supported Retsupurae, or everyone still bothered by it. The old days of KZbin, both the sub-par lets plays, and the riffs of them, are long gone. But what shouldn’t go away is our community trying to have a good time. To everyone coming back in the next few days, and to Slowbeef and Diabetus, and their families, Happy Thanksgiving!

"I cant celebrate a holiday in which the only real prerequisite is to be thankful for something." I also call bullshit. "The gameboy was pretty much a portable NES". Yep, ok sure yep. Now the Gameboy Color, while still not a portable NES, at least LOOKED closer to an NES with the added color. In my opinion, it was always the tiny screens that kept early Gameboy games from being great. Plenty of NES games still hold up today, but you get that same quality game on a Gameboy Color (like the Zelda games), and they don't hold up nearly as well, because of the tiny screen. Especially when you play them on something like a Super Gameboy or Retron 5, where they're blown up and put on a large screen.
@howdoiputthecheeseintheove84379 жыл бұрын
agreed
@licentioushowler34009 жыл бұрын
+TXF Kind of an old comment, but I actually kind of have to disagree a bit that blowing up Game Boy games on a Super Game Boy looks bad... as long as it's on a CRT... with at least S-video... which 98% of the populace won't be doing... so I guess it still looks pretty bad then in a way. Still, I agree that the screen was _way_ too small for games in general--I think the Zelda games worked around it just fine with very few hiccups, but you can see Nintendo themselves couldn't really get platformers working optimally on it firstly with Super Mario Land: The sprites are ludicrously tiny. Sure, you can see a great distance, but the game looks very unappealing because there's no detail. Then comes their second attempt with Super Mario Land 2; where the sprites are nice and large, but you actually have to concern yourself with a camera now, and to compensate they made _every_ enemy in the game move slow as molasses... ugh. It wouldn't be until Wario Land where I felt like Nintendo finally understood how to make a game work well with that screen, maybe Kid Icarus of Myths and Monsters too.

The makers of the Gameboy chose the 4-color screen for many reasons. The color LCD screens would have sent the launch price skyhigh and the 4-color screens were far cheaper to mass produce. The color LDC screen would have worn the batteries down faster and would have made the unit even bulkier, if I remember right. The higher contrasting of the 4-color screen made it easier to see in less light. So the CPU could handle more colored games, it was set to the 4 color monochrome on purpose.

The GB, however, has a modified Z80 running at 4.19 Mhz, with 8k of RAM and 8k of VRAM. Also, the sound chip is slightly better, with the triangle wave channel on the NES' 2A03 being replaced in the GB's PAPU by a programmable wave channel that can play 32 4-bit programmable samples in sequence--in essence, a 4-bit sampler.

@Crezth Gameboy's graphics were in line withy an odl tiger handheld or Game & Watch, same technology really, just with no game data on the machine itself, instead using a cartridge with its own built in battery, RAM, and Data. What you are seeing on original gameboy is predefined pixels turning on and off.
