I remember reading a story about a homeowner in Charleston, S.C., after hurricane Hugo, in 1989. They lost an ancient magnolia tree, which had dominated their townhome garden for who knows how long. It was heartbreaking, but suddenly the garden was filled with sunlight, and new opportunities. Such is life. My mother has been gone for many years. but when I sold the family home in San Diego in October of 2012, I gathered every rose I could find in her garden, (in San Diego, there was a fair number to choose from that late in the season) placed them in an old galvanized bucket, and took them to her grave. I took a photo of it in place, and look at it on Mothers Day. Now I have a huge rose garden in Michigan, way too challenging, but I've had adults literally jump for joy like children when it's in full bloom. Sorry to ramble, blame it on Bunny, and a bit of gin. I love both! And roses!

🤣😂🤣🤣🤣 What a delightful story... I, too, have lost a couple of 200 yr. old trees from my yard... It certainly does dampen ones spirit! But, absolutely, time heals and the newfound light does allow us the opportunity to pave the way for another adventure... Unexpected change certainly encourages us to buck up and cultivate new growth in every aspect of our lives...

Thank you for sharing Bunny Williams book, I am such a fan of her work. I really like your wreath. I also cried over a beautiful Japanese Maple that I nurtured for many years when a storm caused a large cedar tree to fall and break in two. ❤

Love this book and your fabulous presentation! I share with you and Bunny the emotions of garden loss. My last house was torn down by the new owners but that did not trigger the emotions like the loss of my plantings and trees. My beautiful white birch, rhododendron's, viburnums and more sacrificed for an over-sized house. I worked with a wonderful landscape designer at my new home that was a literal blank slate. I laughed every time he said, "you just want what you had"...yep - and then some!😉

Mary , I had to comment on your exquisite Secretary Bookcase . From what i can see of it, it looks like either a Sheridan or Hepplewhite piece. Just a stunning, beautiful piece Is it inherited or did you find it on one of your visits to Antique shops? The patina is especially lovely..You have a gifted eye for Antiques Mary.....I, too, cry when i see a tree come down especially the ancient trees. What history they hold and could tell many stories.. In the 1800's the city I was born in was the Lumber and Sugar Beet Capitol of the world. The lumber is long gone due to greed but the Sugar Beet industry is still going strong. My home town of Saginaw, Michigan was once a thriving town but now it is pretty much in decay mostly thanks to greed. It also had the High School with the highest Academic rating in the US. When I went to U of M they put us all in advance studies as they knew our professors and ciriculum . I mention these things here because so many of the old now gets swept away, including our precious gifts of life, trees , to make way for developments. Nothing changes with time and way too often greed still rules.. I will also mention here I recently bought Bunny's book, New,on Amazon for I think it was $34.00 so check it out if you have interest.. I have most of her books....Most of all Mary. thanks for putting "The Tartan Topiary"on You Tube, I enjoy it very much and it appears so do many others who share common interests; especially those with your delightful, entertaining hubby.. lol

LOVELY !!! Bunny's Garden is her real passion. It shows. You make it look so so easy! (I can see where one may be quite frustrated in working with the mini flower pots! Glad you said that and that the wreath project turned from Beast to Beauty) It is perfect at the potting shed door! I am not a succulent fan but in seeing how lovely yours turned out, I may have to try making one too. Right now, I am in the process of weeding the rose garden and that is taking the patience right out of me. Sending all best wishes from the Golden Isles, Bren

Hi Mary...I found your potting shed wreath so sweet and a nice addition to your garden. I enjoyed the book review of Bunny's garden who I think was born with a green thumb. Tis the season to enjoy our yards/gardens. Benjamin Moore (Hollingsworth Green) was the color before the movie set designers repainted it. Our house was used for a film 2 years ago and they had to repaint our kitchen.
