Racing really did peak in the 90s. Cars were allowed to be faster year after year rather than constant attempts to slow them down and remove cool bits. Cars broke a lot still so attrition made races more interesting as anyone could DNF in a instant. Race cars that sounded like... race cars. But yet it's not so distant and removed from today, unlike the "glory days" of decades prior where races were often won by a lap or two in every series... Old man yells at cloud. Get off my lawn. ;)

@@TacticalCardboard And, frankly, besides Senna's death and the CART oval injuries/fatalities (which we've learned even now tragically comes with the territory), these cars were so engaging and yet on the whole immensely safe and comprised of many modern safety features. It isn't safety that's holding today's cars back, it's definitely lack of imagination and excess of regulation.

This mod is amazing, one of my favs too, perhaps because in my country it was the time where Montoya was the most famous sportman, and for me was the category that made me fall in love with motorsport.. ah the memories

man, same story, Montoya in that 99 season I fell in love with the sport, I honestly love watching those old broadcasts with the Colombian commentators absolutely going nuts over his wins, they would put the Colombian anthem blasting and everything lol

Wow, CART, Road America, late 90s... thanks for the memories! I used to live at that track then. The clouds rolling in to really takes me back to '97. Rain, rain, and more rain. There was an open wheel support series race Sunday evening... they needed headlights but on the TV broadcast it looked much, much lighter out.

I love syncing RPM with the throttle on downshifts. So freaking fun! Kunos' Lotus 97T gives me those chills as well. (probably my favorite car in sim racing, ever!) And when turbo kicks in on the exit! Pure orgasm. RSS dropped 1970 F1 car not that long ago. Solid mod, too.

As Dave said, ASRL is using the oval version soon and has the rolling starts all set. Also ASRL using Hyperion stock car this Tuesday at Daytona with drafting effects programmed by Dave. 9PM eastern New York time.

Yeah, I've tryed my self some oval racing in Assetto Corsa (using 90s F1 cars 'cause why not?), and only after tampering with the IA for an hour or so I was able to get some decent racing, even with fighting at the top for first. But the hassle was to much. And also rFactor, trying out the VHR Stock Car mod, I had problems with AI on ovals. Apparenly NR2003 is still the best for that kind of racing experience offline.

Speaking of AC Indycar mods, have you given 'Formula America's 2020' by Race Sim Studios a try? In my opinion, what they have feels and sounds way more impressive than what iRacing current has in the modern Indycar department.

Yep my favourite, long beach, VIR and road America, with this beauty really takes me bk, best series bk in the day, loved watching it on motorsTV bk in the day and I’m English, my other favourite is the classic touring car legends cars, also struggle with the brakes mind, though I’ve not had the problem with the gearbox

I love the GPLaps YT channel. Only it irritates me that he has to play such old outdated titles heavily modded to have those experiences. We should all be able to jump in a modern title and have a full experience with classic F1, Indy or stock cars. Instead all we get less then bits and pieces while consistently having GT3 cars rammed down our throats. Years ago I bought my first wheel and pedals set because of EBs RaceRoom Group 5 car pack review. I thought damn.....I need to drive those cars. I didn’t know first party content like that would be so rare. What a bummer.

Unfortunately the amount of people wanting to drive older cars is pretty low. People want GT3s and Spa/Nordschleife and that’s it. You only have to look at open lobbies in AC to see.

I really don't think there has been a practical advancement in chassis or aero from a late 90s / early 00s CART car to today's IR18 as far as sim racing is concerned. The whole thing on the ovals is getting the car as low drag as possible and efficient as possible, which they did back then on a per car basis. There was actual variety and small innovations. Today's car aerodynamically was built to look cool and race better.
