From mock ruins and other fanciful garden follies to extravagant manor houses and castles, from simple cottages to Hudson River villas and the mansions of Palm Beach, author Kathleen Mahoney examines Gothic's inventive and exuberant design heritage over the last three centuries. Some 30 structures - many open to the public - in the United States and Great Britain are explored inside and out in beautiful full-color photographs and historic engravings. In addition, the author weaves an intriguing social history that conveys the romantic spirit with which tastemakers, architects, and designers have captured the medieval past.

If only my college professor had explained Gothic Architecture in the same informative and meaningful manner, perhaps I wouldn’t have fallen asleep during his lectures!! Thank you! “Better late than never”.

It seems to me that ancient gothic and Greek Roman French neoclassical style buildings of early medieval European design buildings are forever reviving younger generations bringing classic appreciation for the past prestigious at heart. The ancient structures seems to have been given live with unexplained 😂vivid radiance ❤❤❤

Thanks for such a great review...and tour ! My personal favorite Gothic style is by Thomas Chippendale. Love how he breaks up the repetitiveness of gothic with the asymmetry and floral styles of the Rococo. I have to go and order this book now, but THANKS A BUNCH for posting this ❣

I loved his Gothick (Gothic) designs when I was younger, I still do. They are difficult to find. Thomas Chippendale knew how to add just enough drama to a design without making it look over exaggerated. Thanks for your comment.

Just wondering if gothic is related to the goths and Visigoths. Kinda nerdy, I know! Love to see Wilmington. Thanks.

According to the book...Yes- they were a group of Germanic people often referred to as "barbarians or destroyers". John Evelyn, the 17th century English diarist, noted in his "Account of Architecture" that the best buildings are designed in accordance with Greek and Roman precedence. Westminster Abbey, amongst other English buildings, did not conform to these classical rules, and were written off as "Gothick barbarism" and Gothic was used to describe this design.

I don’t understand why Gothic architecture is always used for dark things, or made into scary houses. Its so pretty! I love everything but it needs to be lighter! Like a fairytale castle! :]

It's not Gothic, it's Arabic, u can see it plainly. Some of them have been stripped and colors has been bleached out

Good eye- According to the book I was reviewing, Gothic style drew upon a number of influences, including Romanesque, Byzantine, and Middle Eastern (Arabian).

@@thetartantopiary People don't know, names are given to certain features of the style. It's so detailed u can focus on one area and give it it's own name. It's interesting you say people are taking a renewed interest in it. Just look at St James Palace in London, it's obviously Arabic, it's everywhere, but buildings have been changed or toned down, or destroyed.

Gothic is usually associated with frightening or dark attributes. The beginning segment is a mix (only a few seconds) from Phantom of the Opera and other theatrical music to showcase a point. This video was part of a Halloween series and has no connection with the occult or other nefarious subject matter.
