This man rode his bicycle around town, taking photos and thinking about photography. After he got home, he made considered, witty reviews about cameras - many of them - and left them here for us to discover. Sadly, he is no longer around to make more of these videos. But now we have these classics, both the cameras and his comments on them.

This camera is selling on the used market for more than twice the price, of when it was new. The LX100 II costs way more, if you could find one. R.I.P. David Thorpe, we all miss you!

I find your reviews consistently thoughtful, thanks. I have the GH4 with the 17.5mm f.095 Voigtlander and 42.5mm f1.2 Leica. Supplemented by Leica CL 90mm and Oly OM 35-70 zoom, both on adapters and owned for decades. Bought a 400mm OM tele for 69 bucks on ebay, so I feel I'm covered lens wise. I carry the LX100 on my hip via a clip and the GH4 over shoulder on a strap. Or I carry LX100 as a stand alone. In reality I don't miss the tilt or touch screen; more than made up for by ease of carry of LX100. Am continually stunned at quality coming out of this little box ; 4K is icing on the cake. From time to time tempted, by X-Pro 2, or Sony A6300, but with my GH4 -- and the LX100 -- I have so far resisted. Can only imagine moving on if I were to abandon MFT entirely; not likely any time soon. Again tx for running list of great reviews.

+William DePaulo Thanks William. Yes, I look at the Sony and Fujis too but so far, like you, they don't provide quite the all round answer that MFT does. Something for everyone in the system, all very adaptable (as your lenses show!) and enough IQ to keep me satisfied.

@@whoever_81 Thanks for your answer. I must say that focus is one of the issues (perhaps the only one) I have with the LX100, achieving it is sometimes pot luck. however, when the result is not completely satisfactory, it is still acceptable and usable. Details in landscapes could be better, for sure, but one could say it depends on the style of photography you aim at. Unfortunately, to me, digital photography has mostly reduced the camera to a sensor and a lens, the rest being done in the very unpleasant "post production", and it is truly amazing what that part of the making of a photo can do (I write this without enthusiasm). Still, I consider the LX100 as the best all-rounder for my work, and to replace it I would need five or ten different cameras, and I only use a tiny proportion of its possibilities, and almost never the video function. I do find the change of aspect ratio very convenient, and the 12 megapixel sensor sufficient. Out are sports and wildlife photos, not mi cup of tea anyway. I was still able to produce a photobook on polo for the local polo federation. Manual control of the various function is all important to me. And I haven't mentioned the price which makes it a real bargain.

Thanks, Being frustrated with a GF1's lack of viewfinder, and the 'Hail Mary ' MO that seems contagious, something like this has appeal. One would think the risk of dust finding it's way in would be low. This style of came, from what I can tell is vulnerable. When the lense racks out a vacuum is drawn. As air rushes in it draws 'dirt' with it. Manufacturers, from what I can tell, have failed to provide a filtered port. It is a serious job to clean a sensor with so much wrapped around it. I would enjoy and use such a beast. Chris

If I were a rich man, I would have a bag of lenses. And if I were that rich man, I would consider this camera a toy. But if I were not a rich man, I would consider this camera a Cartier-Bresson wet dream. For $100 less than the Panasonic 12-35mm F2.8, I would have a faster lens, one with near macro capabilities, and a camera that is a joy to use. Back-to-the-future dials and aperture settings where one can see them without scrolling through some submenu. All in an unassuming presence, perfect for the street. No backpack necessary, even if one could afford to bicycle through southern France.

Even after buying a GX9 some months ago, I find myself watching this review with envy. That 24mm f1,7 lens sounds amazing, and while I keep shopping for lenses, I sort of wish I avoided this perpetual gear acquisition syndrome by just getting the LX100 or mark II with touch screen. I think there are two reasons I haven't, which you articulate here, David: no tilt screen, and that zoom just isn't ideal somehow... it hurts the handsomeness of the camera dramatically. It's not quite pocketable, so it wouldn't solve the compactness issue I mildly have with the GX9. But the main reason I like this camera is something you don't value as much: those classic manual dials! I'm not a fan of the PASM and I really wish I could have that shutter dial instead. I also love the 15mm 1.7 PL for having the aperture ring. Old ideas perhaps, but that visual-physical symbiosis really appeals to me! A mix of the LX100 and the GX9 would be the perfect camera. Oh well.
@DavidThorpeMFT
@DavidThorpeMFT 6 жыл бұрын
I find myself that my perfect camera is always just out of reach. A lot of pros and ex pros use the LX100 and that will be because of the feeling of control the shutter speed and aperture ring gives, I think and as you say. For me, the reassuring certainty of seeing the aperture setting on a physical ring is more than offset by the feeling that I'm going to accidentally knock it off my setting. But we're all different and the LX100 offers all the auto settings anyway. My fears of the aperture ring go back to when I was shooting an exclusive set of a high profile show biz personality with his wife and new baby. I was using my Elinchrom lights and Nikon F and set the aperture for f/8 to give me plenty of focus leeway. At some point I must have knocked it to f/2 and all my colour was SERIOUSLY over-exposed. The darkroom guys saved my bacon and managed to come up with useable prints.....proving the old adage that no photographer is a hero to his printer!
@keith_pictures
@keith_pictures 6 жыл бұрын
@@DavidThorpeMFT oh man, what a painful story! Yes, such things can be traumatising. Incidentally, I'm curious how you say you'd buy this camera if it was a prime lens instead (like a Fuji X100 or Ricoh GR) - is it because you're also annoyed by the unattractive trombone effect of the zoom lens? It quite puts me off, but I do think it's invaluable to have. If only it remained handsomely closed at 24mm!
@DavidThorpeMFT
@DavidThorpeMFT 6 жыл бұрын
@@keith_pictures I reckon a 15 to 17mm f/1.4 lens purpose designed for the LX100 wouldn't be much bigger than the unextended zoom and that would make the camera into a 'little Leica' for street photographers and eliminate its only physical point of weakness, the zoom. It's that weakness combined with the inelegant tromboning that I don't like, as you suggest. Many ex press photographers like such one trick pony cameras for their toughness and their 'always ready' nature. But I'm talking about people who have the luxury of a second camera. For a majority of buyers the zoom will be what they want. Basically, I'm asking Panasonic to build a camera to my personal spec. Surely that's not too much to ask :-)

For me the LX100 works well as a camera that I'll take when I'm not taking a camera. The old school controls make it very easy to pick up and use. It has its limitations, as you noted in your review, but nothing that creates insurmountable problems for me. The focal length range covers most of the shots it needs to. If I think I'm likely to need wider or longer, then I'll bring one of my other cameras instead with the appropriate lens(es). If I had a complaint it would be that it is still running the original firmware. I don't know what Panasonic is usually like at freshening up the firmware of their products, but I'm sure we all have things we'd like tweaked in firmware - not necessarily looking for new features.
@DavidThorpeMFT
@DavidThorpeMFT 7 жыл бұрын
Panasonic is not great at updating firmware. They tend to do it for something specific whereas Olympus seem to regard it more as an ongoing sprucing up of the camera. It's a better policy, I think. The limitation of the LX100 are inherent in its design and are well chosen, I think. There's always a balance necessary between versatility and all round ease of use and I think Panasonic have hot a sweet spot with the LX100. I've recommended it to several friends anfd they all seem delighted with it.
@AdamHouston
@AdamHouston 7 жыл бұрын
The LX100 is my only Panasonic so I don't have a long history with their culture. I guess I'm a bit spoilt with my OM-Ds and Pens because Olympus uses firmware updates not just to provide tweaks but sometimes to provide new features. Overall it's still a beaut little camera for photographers as a complement to their main systems.
@johnc3403
@johnc3403 7 жыл бұрын
I agree on your last comment about the fixed focal length lens but I'd go further. If the LX100 was available with a fixed 50mm equivelent lens, dedicated high quality bespoke B&W sensor and the fisher-price type filters stripped away but replaced by some useful ND filters, I'd buy, even at an elevated price. As for this camera, i have one and i love it...
@DavidThorpeMFT
@DavidThorpeMFT 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, a good thought. It would be a little similar to the mono Leica model in concept. I hadn't thought of it but your idea about ND filters is an excellent one. I'd happily swap all the toy filters etc for a good range of NDs. I've never thought of it but I presume it could be done without IQ loss. You could have, say 5, 10 and 25 and 50 ISO but that impacts on dynamic range.

Thank you for the review, David. I think, given the alternatives, this one will do quite handsomely for daily snapping and as a take-along camera for bicycle (or motorcycle) tours. I'm curious to know what its successor is bound to offer. I must admit, I beg to differ in the lens: for a non-interchangeable lens camera design a zoom lens is, to me, indispensable. I only wish it was a small, but not so flimsy, equivalent of 24 to 135 or thereabouts, with a fixed max. aperture of 2 or thereabouts, lens. 20-24MP for a M4/3 system (or 30MP for APS-C if another manufacturer came up with an alternative - or 36MP for FF - without costing one-third of that of the Sony RX1). ...That the design made full advantage of the entire sensor surface. And that the viewfinder was articulated (and so was the live view display) and slightly larger as you lamented. I concur. ...and that all serious camera equipment came with dedicated dials for aperture, shutter speed and ISO - like in this one and most Fuji models'.

+Gandalf Sk Thanks! The LX100 is more of a photographer's camera than the Sony with all the control it offers via the dials and lens aperture ring. It's a bit bigger than the Sony (though I would prefer this) and has better sequence shooting. And while the Sony has more Mps, this means nothing unless you intend to print bigger than A3. As a long term buy, I'd favour the LX100.

Hi David and thanks for your always helpful videos, I have interest in buying this camera , do you think it can replace my Nikon D90 and the 50 mm f1.8 lens? I don’t have any other lenses and I like the idea of a camera lens combo for being more flexible, would it be a good move to leave dslr behind and move to the large sensor compact? Would I lose image quality ? Thanks in advance.
@DavidThorpeMFT
@DavidThorpeMFT 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Bob. The main thing about the LX would be that you'd always have it with you which maximizes your picture making potential. There is an inevitable loss of image quality by going to a smaller sensor but it is largely not noticeable since images are mainly viewed on phones, tablets or computer screens these days, so any advantage of the larger sensor is lost in the downsampling required for the display medium. Certainly, the LX will be a whole lot more versatile than your Canon/ 50mm combination.

- Is it a great first camera or I should get interchangeable lens camera first? Smaller for more shot or bigger for better handling? - Is it a great manual shooting learning camera? Or too small for that? How about just in photography side? A guy want to upgrade from iPhone to learn about photography to shoot manual, I like the aperture ring but not sure if this is a great camera for that purpose, was plan to get XE3 with 16-55mm F2.8 but the best camera is the one with you, so I guess this is a great camera for that purpose too since its small, has aperture ring and should be great quality and has zoom lens, right? Or I should get RX100 V or LX10? How about the 24mm wide in FF term, is it really as wide as 24mm on FF? Shoot indoor tight space, architecture and landscape is no problem?

I have a GM1 which I use for exactly what you say. It really is tiny and with the 12-32 lens pocketable. IQ is standard Micro Four Thirds, little different, if at all from the G7. Panasonic appear o have dropped them now but I got an as new used one for £149. The Olympus is a little too big for your (and my) purposes. I have the 7-14mm Panasonic, compact and sharp. I just love it for giving a bit of ooomph to land and cityscapes. I tried the Olympus version but it is bigger and more expensive and for my purposes f/2.8 isn't necessary. A lovely linens, though. Incidentally, a G7 and 14-140 is what i always recommend to friends who are looking for a 'do anything' camera. Not had one complaint yet!

I have the Fuji X100 and X100s - and the LX100 - for street shooting - and of course I enjoy using the LX100 a lot lot more - the Fuji X100 is the worst focusing camera I have ever used :) - ok the X100s is better - I love the idea of a M43 sensor and a fast 24-75mm F1.7 in a fairly compact size- ( there is a lens cap with a bit of a hood ) I think Panasonic at the time was trying to compete with the over the top hyped Fuji X100/s/t - by not having a Mode dial etc - I however would have preferred to see a Mode dial - also yes I would have preferred to have it a 16MP - and NO Touch LCD is a real mistake from Panasonic - I just think they where zooming in on the Purists that buy Fuji's and hate Touch LCD's although they use Touch LCD phones every day and love them :) go figure - also I think a Tilt LCD is a must and really does not add that much thickness - I do appreciate the many features of the LX100 - and really often grab it - I hate swapping lenses so the LX100 is just my 24-70mm F2.8 lens - except it is 75mm and F1.7-2.8 - and it is really practical for street shooting - all black and lens does not stick far out and no one knows you got something more serious then a point and shoot compact cameras - they just think you have an old larger point and shoot camera :) I really would consider updating to LX200 - if it had a Tilt LCD - and I think they should give up and include a Mode Dial - the Fuji X100s/r/t hype is over :) - and foremost have Touch LCD - skip the aspect modes - use the full sensor - I would expect they would use the new 20MP sensor - improve a bit on the IS - But really the LX100 is a great street shooter - so light and handy and good image quality and nice low light performance -

+Jon Hermannsson From my own point of view and from many comments, it seems that no touch or swivel screen was definitely a mistake. And most would prefer a mode dial too. The 12Mp I understand because it is that that makes the lens size and speed possible.

For travel and convenience, this (LX100), the new GX85 w/12-32 or the Pen F with 14-42? I'm normally a Leica shooter (Monochrom and film if I want color), and shoot mostly B&W with 50mm lenses. I'd likely shoot JPEG with this camera. LX100 is attractive due to the lens, Pen F due to JPEG customizations, GX85 might give me some AF options I don't have with the Leica (action shots of family sports). Thoughts?
@DavidThorpeMFT
@DavidThorpeMFT 8 жыл бұрын
+Nate Jedinak They all have their merits! The Pen F is very expensive but you are paying for the build and looks. That's not to say it's not a good camera but I don't think I'd regard it as value for money purely as a camera. It might satisfy a Leica user though, usd to that metallic quality. The GX is lovely (I've just picked one up today) but you do have the lens changing to contend with. Since you have the Leica for your more serious photography and want a second camera for convenience, I think I'd go for the LX100. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone serious about photography as their only camera, that would have to have interchangeable lenses. But for convenience and image quality it isn't second to any of the cameras that you mention (other then the Leica, of course!) and focus wise all Panasonics come with class leading focusing speed and Micro Four Thirds accuracy and there'd be little if any difference between this and the GX. The LX100 feels good too and I think you'd find it your best choice.

Thank you for the measured and thoughtful reply, David. I think you're right, and this is the direction I'm leaning... Additionally the haptics look very familiar, which is a consideration. What is giving me pause: the B&W coming out of the Pen is attractive (and for this purpose, I welcome time saving), and I'm a bit nervous about "marrying" the LX's lens as of course on the GX/Pen F I could shoot something like the 25/1.4, which may better match my expectations. But perhaps simplicity should rule. I'll try to get my hands on them soon. Thank you for the reply!

as ever David a nice well balanced video review. Everyone (including Panny) says it's the GX7 viewfinder but somehow the GX7 vf seems better to me.... the lack of a touch screen I could live without but I really missed some form of tilty screen. handy for low down shots. there was a lot here to like it just wasn't quite right. TBH this is a body with a tilty screen that would be a good 2nd body for m43 shooters.... 12-32 35-100 and 20 mm would be great for travel. ok for you add that Oly 17 :D a few asides IF Panny would make that lens with a 2.2 crop factor to use on a GX7/GX8 or any m43 camera, would you buy it? I'm looking forward to your 25 f1.7 review. that is a ridiculously cheap lens for m43..... bit like the Oly 45 f1.8 you ever reviewing the G7??

+Pete Duxon Too right about the Olympus 17mm :-) It's very subjective but it seems to me that the GX7 EVF is better. I'd be interested in a standalone 12-75mm but I wouldn't mind if it was a bit bigger to cover the full sensor, especially if it could go out to 80mm.

Lx100 mark 2 vs olympus em10 mark 2, which one would you recommend for day to day or travel use?
@DavidThorpeMFT
@DavidThorpeMFT 4 жыл бұрын
I'd say the LX. The Olympus is obviously more versatile but only with the addition of extra lenses which change the game somewhat. For sheer trouble free use day to day and travel, it#s hard to beat. Also, if you did find yourself getting into the realms of ultra wide and tele photography, the LX remains entirely functional as the camera you take everywhere with you when you are not planning any picture taking - but something might present itself.

I want to buy my first camera, a compact camera for ease of use and portability. I am stuck between Lx10 and Sony Rx100 lV or V since they are a more recent version cameras. From what I've got by reading through the specs and reviews, although Lx10 is a recent version camera, it is not necessarily an upgrade from Lx100, although it might have the tilt/touch screen features and + Sony Rx100 lV / V, especially Mark V seemed attractive with AF technology and all, but the result of the photo seemed very flat and cold to me. Lacks the sentiment should I say? So, I'm leaning towards this two-three years old Lx100. The main usage would be street/landscape photography. And most likely I'll be enjoying the photos on my phone and computer. Would you also recommend the Lx100 over the other two options(Lx10 and Rx100 lV/V) ? I'd really appreciate your thoughts! Thanks.

Oh, I'd like to add Sony a6000 to the list. Perhaps putting this camera on the list gives an obvious winner, but I really don't know much about cameras + the end result of what each camera is capable of producing. Thanks!
@DavidThorpeMFT
@DavidThorpeMFT 7 жыл бұрын
The A6000 does put you in a different area, being an interchangeable lens camera. It loses some portability, therefore and the standard zoom lenses will be slower and bigger. This will be the best image quality of your choices but at a penalty which takes it out of your original specification. If you want a widish range high speed zoom, the LX100 would look to be your best best. A good all round compromise on image size and quality with a highly controllable package. If you are considering interchangeable lens cameras, I'd take a look at the Olympus E-M10 MkII. But given your ease of use and portability requirements the LX100 is probably the best all rounder.

There are not many of those out there with these spec: 24mm F1,7 to 70mm F2,8 in 35mm full frame comparison,that lens alone had possibly cost around 500 to 600 quid maby more....and it have Power O.I.S also.That sets it up against Pany 12mm-35mm F2.8 Which is priced around 850 (GBP) pound!...Isn't this camera or the lens a steal for the price? A new Panasonic LX100 today 27.05.17. Cost in Norway 520 (GBP) Pound.

Thanks Knut. Yes, it is a camera based around the lens. You couldn't make a lens like this for an interchangeable lens camera so the whole thing together does make a bargain. The penalty is that you can't use a longer or wider lens with it but for most people looking for a general purpose camera, the lens on the LX100 is more than enough. I've recommended this camera to several friends and they are all delighted with it. I am glad to say!

For me, the GX7 with Olympus 17mm f/1.8 (20mm Panasonic if you prefer) and 45mm Olympus or Panasonic lenses plus a 14-140mm would constitute a perfect outfit. _Plus_ you can add old 35mm lenses, macro, 300mm if and when you want to.

I got one of these as a companion to a GX7 and I've got to say, it's so snappy, it makes the GX7 feel a bit slow and laggy (though I still love it). . I love the fact that, with the leaf shutter, you get high-speed flash sync and effectively silent shooting without the risk of banding from fluorescent light sources. I agree it would be better with a swivelling touch screen, and frankly, I'd prefer it to have a mode dial/twin input dials, partly for ease of one-handed use and partly so I'm not pawing fruitlessly for controls that aren't there when I swap between this and the GX7. Interested to note that you also disabled that lens ring; I didn't have trouble with it fouling the aperture ring, but whatever parameter I set it to, I ended up changing it without meaning to. I'd much prefer a Fuji-style mechanical zoom ring to save on battery power and speed up zooming. Speaking of controls that don't stay put, I have to check the exposure compensation dial on mine every time I get it out. It's far too easy to move accidentally. Firmware fixes: Panasonic really needs to make the top plate iA and filter buttons programmable; at the moment they're just a waste of space. More importantly, they need to restore the lovely LX-series manual focus distance scale with DoF bar; the LX100 has the useless G-series mountain-and-flower scale which tells you nothing. I've been waiting years for Panasonic to upgrade the G-series focus scale to the better LX-series one and instead they've gone completely the wrong way. But at least the LX100 will do focus and zoom resume. All curmudgeonliness aside, I love my LX100 and carry it everywhere. It has to be absolutely the best compact I've ever used.

+Svenja In particular, taking a camera in and out of a bag can move all kinds of settings and it is useful that you've mentioned it. I'll try to keep it in mind for reviews. What you say about features , I've written about this occasionally. It's like Microsoft Word, where any one person only used about 10% of what it can do. But of course, features are attractive to reviewers. What I'd like would be a camera that came with, say, 4 levels of firmware and which could be installed via USB. So you could have Firmware Level 1 which gave you much the same settings choice as a film camera. Level 2 might add video. Level 3 would add more features and so on. I like your remark about good camera but I wouldn't buy it again. Very pragmatic view. What would you replace it with? In Micro Four Thirds Panasonic menu and controls are about as good as it gets. It may be that a G7 would suit you better? Or non-Micro Four Thirds.

+David Thorpe That is a very good idea, allowing cameras with different levels of firmware isntalled. In fact I love mirrorless cameras but cannot decide between an Olympus Pen (which one soever), or a Fuji with the slightly bigger sensor. I have a couple of Leica M lenses and could use it on either system with a Novoflex adapter. And your comparison to MS Word is very accurat. I might handle all those systems, a Lumix as well as MS Word, but it takes too much attention. Mainly I only want to type or to take photos. I like that in the old Leicas I have. Isn't the LX100 lens equivalent to a 24-75mm lens, and not 12-75? This is a terrific camera and because I like shiny new things, I might buy it. However, the Sony A6000 with a 16-50mm lens comes quite close to the LX100 in weight, negating a principal advantage of the 4/3 sensor. The A6000 has image stabilization and multi-frame mode for use with very high ISOs. Plus it has a tilting monitor. Of course, it also has more resolution with 24 mp APS-C sensor. And you can always change lenses on the A6000. Because the A6000 out specs the LX100 in almost every category, and particularly almost matches it in weight, I'd say the former camera is a better camera. But I can't say it, because the A6000 lenses are all slower lenses. Put an f/1.7 lens on an A6000. though, and you'd have a beast. The fact that the LX100 has such a fast lens at the short end is what keeps it from having a longer zoom, which would, even it it were quite slow, make it a beast, too.

+Dave Wyman That's a slip o' the tongue, I must watch that. I might start quoting angles of view rather than equivalent focal lengths, more exact and less accident prone! The cameras, all compromises, isn't it? If this then not that and so on. We have a choice of cameras and lenses now that were undreamed of a couple of decades ago but the perfect one camera for everybody will never exist - I am happy to say. I love your remark about shiny things - it says so much in a few of words. I love shiny things too. I used to think I shouldn't but I just accept it now. I love the feel of new stuff and finding out what I can do with it but some of today's cameras not only perform great but are beautiful little sculptures too.

No spots on the sensor? Wish you were right! my GX7 after 3 year’s service is “spotless” - so is my Nikon D-series fleet big regrets of blowing a Grand on this predenter! my LX7 is my go-to disposeble choice the use of the name “Leica” on these pretenders is a violation of my 1956 DS M3’s “spotless” track record

Many of the earlier Leica digital cameras were rebadged Panasonics which I always felt was a bit unprincipled on Leica's part. Obviously Leica makes money out of Panasonic for the Leica name in some way still! I had a pair of Leicas, an M2 and M3 but I hated the things. They had one use and once only for me, the quiet shutter compared to the appalling 'clop' of my Nikons that got in the way of working on film sets and such places. There were always those appalling blimps, of course. Now, at last, we have silent cameras!

$750 CDN still strikes me as a lot for this thing.

David Thorpe I ended up arriving at that same conclusion, also noticing that they likely won't release a predecessor until late 2016 with Canadian release probably not until early 2017. Picked one up.

+jagerx I just realized that €750 CDN is a good bit cheaper than the UK price :-(

David Thorpe Yeah it appears you're getting pretty beat up. Cheapest UK price I found was 450 pounds or roughly $900 CDN. Yikes. I won't complain.

Aperture ring is pointless, because when you set it at F/1.7 and then zoom in, your aperture will be smaller than F/1.7, but the ring will stay put -> the ring does not show actual aperture. Shutter speed - you cannot set it to 1/50 with a dial (let alone 1/48), so you set it to 1/60, then adjust to 1/50 with a rear dial -> the top dial does not show actual shutter speed. These controls look like real mechanical controls from 50 years ago, but in reality they are fake. They are made for wannabe photogs who want to show off a classic manual camera. But it is not a manual camera, so stop pretending. The LX100 shoots great stills and 4K videos, but its ergonomics sucks, and its "I want to be a real mechanical camera" appeal is totally deceiving. This is why I despise the LX100. Oh, and the lens is too short at 75mm. I want something around 120mm. I understand I cannot get it in a body this small with 4/3 sensor, so to me the Fuji X30 makes more sense (but not as a video camera, because its video quality is horrible). Or get the G7, which - surprise! - sells for less than the LX100, but its kit lens has bigger reach: 28-84mm in 35mm terms. Also, its viewfinder breaks up in a rainbow whenever I look into it, I don't like the technology Panasonic used in the EVF.

+David Thorpe I bought one and then returned it for the reasons I stated - sorry, B&H. I just bought the G7 for a very sweet price, almost twice cheaper than the LX100. With the kit 14-42mm I am missing nothing the LX100 offers, have longer range, have sensible controls, have mic input, and if I wanted to I can swap the lens. The lens is slower than on the LX100, this is a downside. Yes, I cannot put the G7 with the lens attached in a pocket, another downside. But at least its controls do not enrage me, and the grip is so much better.

+EluraUser The G7 is a lovely camera. I'm just working with it now. You are echoing what I said in my video, actually. For most people the G7 or another MFT body are much better value with much more extensibility. You can't get a G7 in your pocket? I couldn't get the LX100 in mine. A coat pocket, maybe but with the 12-32mm zoom fitted, so will the G7. Nonetheless, the lX100 will fill the bill for some people with particular requirements and it's great that it exists for those folk.
