I own a pair of Thomas Bird Benson wholecut shoes in olive. They're very nice shoes, although I had to use some yellow wax polish to bring out more of the green tones. I particularly was impressed with how fast I got them. I live in the United States and ordered the shoes on a Sunday; I received them by DHL that Thursday afternoon.

The yellow wax is an inspired way of lightening the tones of olive colour up. The delivery was swift, for me and would have been quicker, but I ordered at 8pm at night on a Friday and they were delivered on the Tuesday morning, great services by both Thomas Bird and DHL👍🙂

They look fab! I love a pair of whole cuts....I have a pair in ox-blood from Jones the Bootmaker which I love to break out for a bit of extra dapperness! You don't see whole cuts often so they offer a bit of difference! The Jacomets over at Sartorial Talks did a recent episode on these companies that make shoes in Italy/Spain etc. worth a listen!

I got a pair of blue double monks. As an American with wide feet & in between sizes, I sized up instead, as I have found that European shoe makers tend to have narrow feet. Mine fit great & I was impressed with their quality. I'm planning on getting some grey suede boots & probably some scarlet or oxblood whole cuts later

Hi Sean, it sounds like you with mastered your shoe sizes for your particular foot. This shoes design is ideal for someone with an average foot width and instep, but I would say the do also provide additional support via email if you have any difficulties with sizing. The Double Monk Strap shoe is a great semi formal shoe, you sound like you have a bit of a wish list going on, with the boots and Scarlet or oxblood Wholecut shoes. All great choices👍🙂

Could you add metal toe plates to these? ( Lulu French Tips or Brass Plated Triumph plates)

Hi there, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I have contacted the owner of Thomas Bird and they have confirmed with me, it's not a service they provide and they have no plans of offering Benson with such plates or blakeys ( Lulu French Tips or Brass Plated Triumph plates). "It would be a case of the customer modifying their own shoes with their local cobbler". I would add that in most cases Lulu French Tips or Brass Plated Triumph plates can be fitted to most shoes, you might have to have the tips and plates modified to fit, but a good cobbler would be able to do this or advise you further. Hi Wayne, I would say (in my opinion) they are comparable, the Blake stitching as the same standard as Barker's and the finish is equivalent to Loake or Barker's 👍🙂
