This tie is as bold as they come, Chris. Good choice of shirt colour. This tie is not quite my thing, unless I was at an equally colourful event. Sometimes a tie is chosen to challenge us and this one at least offers a number of colour themes to go with it, including plain grey to make it more of a statement piece.😊

Would barn coats work be in this category, too? For me, they take the place of the chore coat? I have found that most chore coats are a bit too snug for me, where as a barn coat is more functional.

I wear M65 jackets for like ~25 years. Love the 4 pockets style. Also so called "Safari" Jackets into similar style, 4 pockets. It's the only thing, which is time-less, seriously. Have 2 G.I. issue M65s, and modern reproductions. Good enough. Woodland camouflage is a bit too offensive, into daily, ordinary life. So i prefer olive green, or -black, preferred. Have one jacket which looks similar (M65 style, field jacket style) from color like your last field jacket here - but i'll recolor it it olive green, at least next january...

Hi Patrice, glad you enjoyed the video and the content. When it comes to shirts, it depends on the price a person is willing to pay. In no particular order, I use TM Lewin, Charles Tyrwhitt (and I'm about to do a review on their custom shirts), Hawes and Curtis, The Savile Row Company Brook Taverner. There also Hawkes and Gieves, but the one that stands out for me at the moment, whether its ready to wear or bespoke it has to be Emma Wills - great quality shirts designed to last, exception quality cotton etc. Most companies will ship ab👍ard as well👍🙂 hope that helps

Excellent content Chris. The use of your back catalogue of images are perfect for illustrating the different dress code styles in the discussion. To me, they epitomise the very essence of what The British Dapper is all about.👍 As gentlemen, there is nothing wrong with aspiring to be the best version of ourselves, and where better place to start than with the clothes we wear. This video offers a wide variety of style ideas to help get us started, and if we are prepared to go the 'pre-owned' route for certain key items, it needn't cost a fortune. Regardless of what we are doing socially, we never know who we are going to bump into that we might want to get to know a little better. Whatever the circumstances, we only ever get one chance to make a first impression. Let’s make it a good one!

Hi John, glad you enjoyed the video and the use of my back catalogue of imsges to demonstrate the differing levels of formality. I totally agree with you, that we should aspire to being the best version of ourselves and dressing is one of the bigest visual ques to other we invest in ourselves and have an attention to detail, above that of many people in this day and age. Again, I'm in full agreement with you John, you never know socially who you might bump into and might want to impress or get to know better and first impressions definately counts👍🙂

Well, there are certainly a lot of celebrities from your list whom I really wouldn’t call well dressed because for example with Tom Hardy he wears his belt far too low and therefore also his trousers and comparable things seem to be the case with many of them to me, it seems as if all of them could be pretty much traced back to them just not following the most basic rules of proper dressing of course if you know the rules you can break them but they managed to do the mistakes where it does the most damage I didn’t say and it just doesn’t look right though where I couldn’t possibly agree more is your choice of his royal Majesty King Charles as the most well dressed man there is I just love his pink lapel double breasted suits whom he really buys quite a lot but in general from his Cuffs being just exactly the right amount of length over the shirt to his ties and shirts always be creative but always fitting perfectly. He definitely is the greatest of all inspirations. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him with one slightest mistake of style. I certainly also admire his great intellect and most definitely his beautiful way of speaking. Those are all qualities together with his marvellous and absolutely impeccable way of dressing that our great inspiration to me and twitch. I’m trying to live up as good as I can his majesty definitely is a great role model to me in so many different ways and I think if more young people would look up to him instead of some nasty rappers or similar cultural disgrace the world would certainly be a better place. He just lives as the standing picture of a perfect gentleman.

Excellent video Chris. When I was at school we wore a grey three-piece suit with a white stiff detachable Arundel collar and black shoes and socks. The only colour was in my tie dark blue with a thin white and yellow stripe. We had to wear a four-in-hand knot, tied so that the knot sat on the front collar stud and arched out before going into the waistcoat. It taught me the lessons of dressing properly at an early age, but also how effective it was to simply have a flash of colour against the grey suit and the ridged formality of a stiff collar. The principles of colour you highlight here just reminded me of that.

Another great video Chris, thank you. You have some great outfits and combinations there. I do think red ties/pocket squares do complement blue shirts. May I ask your opinion on tie pins (those pins that go under the knot of your tie) and tab collars? I've recently rewatched the Bond movie Skyfall and was really impressed by the look. While attempting to be well dressed I'm always conscious of trying to not cross over into costume or a cosplay look. I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this.
@TheBritishDapper5 күн бұрын
Hi Bernard, Glad you enjoyed the video and gained inspiration. Tie pins and bars are a classic method of holding the tie in place and I think the are very effective at doing this - a perfectly reasonable item to wear. As for tab collar shirts they are a great way of accentuating the arch of the tie knot and is again another classic look. both items are perfectly acceptable. Hope that helps👍🙂

Have you covered trouser lengths? No break, half break etc. I am always “interested” to see someone with trousers that are not (for me) the correct length with excess cloth around the ankles. I would not have considered a double breasted suit with notch lapels. The width of lapels seems to vary in cycles although I have always favoured medium wide but haven’t seen any “stylish” DB suits with notch lapels
@TheBritishDapper5 күн бұрын
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video, I have briefly covdered trouser length in the past and although this video covers a number of issues to avoid, it does cover the trouser break, kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZmvcmivh9iHjK8 hope this helps, let me know how you get on or if you'd like more information on this suject. As for double breasted jackets, the width of the lapel does vary and this can be as a result of the era the suit was made. Made to measure or bespoke can be the better way of getting what you want with the style and type of lapel you'd like with a double breasted suit or jacket. Medium width of lapel is a good one (very classic) never in or out of fashion and the width of the lapel doers dictate the width of the tie worn 🙂 Let me know how you get on in your search🙂👍

@ thank you for the referral. I’ve watched it and certainly agree about what looks best for slim or regular width trousers. I always associate - going back to my days working in Soho in the 60’s with shops like Squires, Village Gate, Cecil Gee and others, no break with the US. My “history” is having half break and full break about 1” longer in both cases to what you show - but there is no right or wrong and just a matter of taste.

Any other ways you'd dress down a suit? i have some lighter suits i acquired recently, im hoping to wear them almost casually. adding colour is definitely part of that, as is more casual shoes (brown derbies, tan chelseas and brown loafers, even light tan boots with broguing are in my collection) but i wonder if im missing a trick?

Hi James, Glad you enjoyed the video, and great to hear you acquired some lighter suits. Adding colour via a shirt, tie or pocket square will always lift the level of informality. Very smart, Chris. I would have gone for a tie with some sort of pattern to it rather than plain navy with a navy suit (that is what it looks like in the video). In your defence, you have compensated by injecting a variation of textures between the suit and the tie.👍 The pink gingham shirt offers a well chosen bold note and the pocket square breaks the blue backdrop up perfectly without shouting for attention. Love the shoes. These Wednesday's Wear 'shorts' are always interesting for the way you often challenge our thoughts on the alternatives for putting an outfit together. It is also helpful that you always show us the entire outfit from head to toe. That is equally important and much appreciated. Thank you.😊

Hi John, glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate the purpose of the videos to inspire and show alrenatives to peoples usual way of dressing. True I could have used a patterned tie, but because the shirt is a bold colour, I thought that needed to be tamed alittle by a plain tie with a bit of texture. The pocket square adds a pop of colour, yet is not to load. The shoes are Loake design called 'Clint', great for a less formal suit wear. Lovely to hear from you and catch up soon👍🙂
