I use an easier and smaller knot similar to the half Windsor. I call it the Tim since I figured it out on my own when I was about 12. Start the same way but with the underside of the tie facing out and narrow side on the right. Cross the narrow side above the wide side and hold that spot in place with left finger and thumb. Raise the wide side with right hand and fold into neck loop on right side so it now drops down from the backside of the knot. Cross it over the front on top of your left index finger and go around the back of the neck loop on the left side then bring in and drop it down the hole in the front where your left index finger is. Pull tight.

Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video and love this look. there were 2 quilted jackets in this video, one waxed and the other was just insulated. Both were inexpensive yet great quality for there price point. It is good to see the revival of the SAFARI JACKET, which is basically just a Norfolk jacket made of a lighter fabric. I think it is particularly elegant to wear it with a cravat and with a belt. To give it a particular African vibe it could be worn with a South African suede "veldtschoene", which are basically desert boots. The only accessoire I can't get round to wearing with it is with a pith helmet (although I own 2 of them).... although that looks really great.

Lots of great ideas, Chris, all thoughtfully put together in detail to show the overall look each time. Very helpful. Above all, you demonstrate that being casually dressed, yet still impeccably turned out, are not mutually exclusive. I do like the patterned shirt at 8:48 and how you paired it up with the rest of the outfit. The rolled back shirt cuff is a great compromise for those of us who don't generally favour short sleeve shirts. Thanks for the reminder that summer also heralds open season for suede shoes (including chukka boots), and for the nod that a well chosen cravat can be a nice finishing touch to an open-neck shirt. Lastly, having worn a safari jacket more than 50 yeas ago, I have to acknowledge that today's designs look more stylish, particularly the one shown at 10:44. 😎 P.S. I have sent you an email.

Hi John, glad you enjoyed the video. Funny you should mention how the style of the safari jackets have changed since the 70's, as I saw one in a charity shop near me the other day and it had those 4 or 5 inch long pointed collar's that were synonymise with that era and it looked very dated, unlike the modern ones available now which are more stylish. I got your email, thanks John, I'll reply to it tonight. Take care dear friend 👍🙂

Hi Chris. I like the picture of you in the tumbnail at the end were you wear a grey hat with the grey hunting coat. Is it true that you shouldn't wear the same color hat as an overcoat/great coat or is that just a myth?
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 6 күн бұрын
Hi Sean, glad you enjoyed the video and great question 🙂 The idea that you shouldn't wear the same colour hat as your overcoat or Jacket is more of a style guideline than a strict rule. Fashion norms and guidelines often evolve, and individual style preferences play a significant role in how people dress. Here are a few considerations: 1. Monochromatic Look: Wearing the same colour hat and overcoat can create a monochromatic look, which can be stylish if done correctly. However, this look can sometimes appear overly coordinated or lack contrast, making it less visually interesting. 2. Contrast and Interest: Mixing different colours can add visual interest and contrast to an outfit. For example, a dark overcoat paired with a lighter or differently coloured hat can create a balanced and appealing look. 3. Traditional Guidelines: Traditional fashion guidelines often suggest that accessories, including hats, should complement but not necessarily match exactly. This helps in creating a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing outfit. 4. Modern Trends: Modern fashion trends are more flexible, and personal style is highly valued. Some people prefer matching colours for a sleek and coordinated look, while others enjoy mixing colours for a more dynamic and personalised style. In conclusion, while it's not a hard and fast rule that you shouldn't wear the same colour hat as your overcoat, considering contrast and personal style can enhance your overall look. The most important aspect is that you feel confident and comfortable in your outfit.👍🙂

Hi Chris. As usual you have nailed some great Summer looks again. Back in the 70s and 80s linen was an expensive choice, as I recall. Today linen shirts and sports jackets are much more affordable and with a wider range of colours, thankfully. I wonder if you have ever worn seersucker? I have a couple of shirts and a siut in this material. I find it very cool in warm weather. Because of the rouched nature of seersucker it won't stick to your skin even if you sweat.
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 6 күн бұрын
Hi Billy, glad you enjoyed the video. True linen was expensive in the past, however it is now considered to be a more eco friendly material to grow and it is incorporated into more every day wear in the form of mixed fabrics, such as linen/cotton, linen/wool or linen and silk. I personally dislike the untidiness of pure linen when it is wrinkled, it takes time to get used to it, where as mixed linen or cotton fabric tend to wrinkle less and hols their form better in my opinion. And that brings me onto answering you question about seersucker. I have in the past had a seersucker suit and separate trousers, back in the 80's and I love them for their casualness and relaxed summer wear. Seersucker is still very popular now, due to the qualities you mentioned, especially in hot climes.👍🙂

Wonderful video Chris. A movie journey through men's style. I used other people as inspiration all the time. I do it less nowadays, since I am more experienced with men's style and have found my own style. David, Niven, Cary Grant and Paul Newman were my guys. I still look at their style from time to time. In 2009, George Clooney appeared in the movie "Up in the Air". He wore a blue tie with white stripes. I fell in love with that tie and wanted one too. I started scouting in different stores and found one. I still have it and it is one of my "go to" ties when I am not feeling wearing any of my other ties. I call it "the Clooney". I think I have never given a tie a name.

...interesting, people protect themselves by laughing at you.
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 8 күн бұрын
That's an interesting observation. I can see how people might use humour as a defence mechanism to deal with uncomfortable situations or to mask their own insecurities. It's a way for them to protect themselves, even if it means laughing at someone else. It can be hurtful when you're on the receiving end of such behaviour, but understanding the underlying reasons can sometimes help in not taking it personally. Often, their laughter is more about their own issues than anything to do with you. In situations like these, it's important to maintain your own self-worth and confidence. Remember, you have control over how you react, and choosing to rise above it can be empowering. Surrounding yourself with supportive and understanding people can also make a big difference.

Hi Ron, glad you enjoyed the video. It’s great to hear you love the suit combinations. David Niven, Sean Connery, and Steve McQueen are indeed timeless style icons, and their influence is undeniable. I understand what you mean about opportunities to wear suits - they can be few and far between. joining clubs, associations or attending charity fund raisers can be a good way of generating further opportunities. Sports jackets are a fantastic choice, though, as they offer versatility and a touch of sophistication without being overly formal. Do you have a favourite style or fabric for your sports jackets? 👍🙂

Wow Chris, that was a mini marathon of style. That final Prince of Wales check is a real winner in my books. The wine overcheck with the burgundy square is similar to what I bought about twenty years ago. It has one and a half inch trouser turn-ups and still looks great today. I must admit I am a great fan of trouser turn-ups but find that look hard to find as they have gone out of fashion.

Hi Billy, glad you enjoyed the video👍 I am a lover of Prince of Wales check suits and this particular one I love wearing, with the berry over check adding that elevated look. It sounds like you've got a great suit there as well. Turn ups (cuffs) are not as common nowadays, but you could buy the trousers with a longer inside leg (the longer the better), to provide more material to allow a tailor to adjust the bottoms to create that cuff or go for a unfinished trouser leg, but better still would be to buy made to measure, but for the best results (if you can) go bespoke (it costs a lot of money - but it is a worthwhile investment in the long run). 👍🙂

I myself live in the countryside and I often wear tie and suit even when walking the dogs on gravel trails. Sadly, I end up wearing my old scuffed up brogues with the fear of damaging newer pairs. Hi there, great to hear you employ a suit when walking the dog and I don't blame you for wearing your older shoes when walking on travel trials, I would say that walking on dusty/gravel surfaces in the dry does tend to kick up that very fine dust that makes your shoes look worse than they actually are from a wear prospective. I fully understand your frustration of changing from one look to another, I personally without the additional things a prepare for videos, tend to still work with 3 ongoing ensembles, work wear (gardening/chore based), casual for popping into town and then a little more formal for work or meeting for drinks or evenings out. Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for your comments👍🙂

A great tie choice, Chris, and one that perfectly complements the shirt. Impressive detail being conveyed here in just 57 seconds, from the black `ticking' in the white stripe of the tie, to the well chosen Victoria knot (with dimple) due to the spread of the shirt collar.
