When I started as an LEO in the very early 70's I was issued Smith & Wesson 67 38 spl. revolver. After a couple years I was issued a Smith & Wesson 66 .357 mag. revolver. I trained and qualified 6 times a year and was very proficient in the use of a revolver as a Law Enforcement weapon. I also trained and qualified with a Smith model 29 .44 mag. In 1990 I was issued a Smith 5906 and I carried it till I retired. I trained and qualified with the 5906 6 times a year and was very proficient in using it as a Law Enforcement weapon. Before I retired I was offered a Glock 19 if I traded in my 5906. I chose to keep my 5906 and I still qualify with it yearly at the police range along with my Smith 66 and 29. I do however go to a local range once a month to maintain proficiency with all of my handguns. I can truly say I do however love revolvers (wheel guns). There is just something about that magnum cartridge I love. I will however say there is a difference between shooting a revolver and a pistol and if you are going to shoot both you must practice regularly with both.

James Yeager I learned to shoot my dad's Smith model 17 when I was 4. I had to train and qualify with a model 15 for 11 years. I had a few old timers will ing to teach me as I was growing up. it is hard currently to find good revolver training on the market right now.my grandfather made sure I spent a lot of time with his model 36 which is why it is still a favorite. later on I used model 19s for carry and sporting use. when I hit my early 20s I was introduced to the writing of Elmer Keith which meant I had to acquire a 29

I’m not looking for a crack because I agree with what you said...just have to comment that I see a revolver as a good option for someone who is not a “gun person”. The revolver is simple. It’s easy to see if it’s ready. A revolver doesn’t require recoil to function the action. You can’t lose the magazine on a revolver. You don’t need to cycle the slide to load or forget to cycle it when unloading.

I assume that when people say revolvers or shotguns are good defensive options for "novices" (read: not gun people) they mean it's a gun with a simple manual of arms. With a traditional double action revolver, you can choose to cock the hammer or not, and there's a cylinder release- but you don't have a manual safety or a take-down lever. So, there's less of these things to confuse with each other in a very stressful situation, that being a defensive shooting. This means that, in a close range defensive shooting at least, someone who rarely fires it or otherwise trains with their gun, won't screw up and accidentally forget to take the safety off or accidentally use the take-down lever, thinking its the safety. People often apply this line of reasoning to women, but I think it also applies to men who almost never fire or train with their gun as well.
@jamesr792
@jamesr792 6 жыл бұрын
stoned serpent I don’t agree at all A revolver can only be run well if the user is highly proficient. If the user is not, a polymer framed, striker fired 9mm is the answer-case and point, a Glock. It’s far easier to shoot and you have three times as many rounds on tap.
@stonedserpent9206
@stonedserpent9206 6 жыл бұрын
@@jamesr792 that's a matter of what you mean by well run- and for that matter, I'm arguing that someone who isn't proficient can more easily learn to pull a heavy trigger five or six times, when the gun doesn't have extra levers and buttons they can confuse in a critical situation. Again, I'm not saying these people can't learn to run a Glock or M&P- I'm talking about people who choose not to, for the most part. People who want something simple to operate. For people like you and me, these polymer striker fired guns make sense because we are interested in them, and we research them; we learn how they work and how to operate them. But for some people, they want to put a loaded gun in a nightstand and leave it alone until they need it. And for those people, sometimes a revolver works out as a better choice. Sure it doesn't have the capacity as a polymer wonder 9, but it has enough bullets to suffice for most situations, statistically speaking. And again, I'm talking about people who may go to the range once a year- or less. These aren't people who are proficient with their gun, and they only have the one gun; no, they're just adequate with it. People like this exist, and they may not have the same preferences as regards firearms that you or I have.

the truth in what you said there stoned serpent, the sad truth, is there are a lot of people out there that have a gun, don't take training and practice seriously enough and think they are prepared. Lots and lots of them. The only thing is, in most parts of America they wont ever need it. To me a gun for self defense is like a sky divers parachute. If you need it, its the only thing that will work, but if you don't get training and practice regularly with the correct mindset, its worth less if you have even a little bit of bad luck.
@jamesr792
@jamesr792 6 жыл бұрын
At the end of the day, I’m still convinced that a polymer framed double stack 9mm is easier to use. There are even few controls than a revolver. It’s the same pick up, point, and shoot manual of arms-you just get to do it ten more times

Never forget that a quality revolver can, at times, fill in for a carbine when one is not available. Not saying this in respect to power, but distance shooting. I routinely shoot a .357 S&W model 66 out to 300 yards. I have friends that can do the same with their .44 magnums. Of course not all revolver calibers are capable of this ie .38. .32 mag. Ect. At least not by me. I suspect the .327 might be able to this as well. Bill Jordan got me to thinking about this in his book “No Second Place Winner” years ago. He sent a sniper from an overwatch position packing when they took fire from, I believe around 200 yards. I do not think he claimed to have hit the man, but he was no longer there to protect the “mule train” crossing the border with contraband. To accomplish this you are required to use an alternate sight picture, but once learned it is not difficult to get hits on a man sized target. I believe Jordan did his shooting at the smugglers over watch at night.

Revolvers are great! I make it my business to shoot all styles of firearms. And to shoot them all accurately off hand. Even a single action western style revolver. Young guys at the range look at me like I'm an alien when I shoot my lever actions. Whether it be bolt, semi auto,tactical,old military,revolver,snubbie,long barrel,single action,double action,Derringer,whatever- I make sure I am proficient with each one. Rifles to 200(except 22LR) and hand guns to 25 and 50. I only shoot below 25 yards with snubbies. I Lovem all. Heck I also shoot my bow to 55 yards with consistent groups,throw a knife, an ax and I practice with a sling shot. Who knows maybe I'll try a blow gun and spear next. Too bad we can't own grenade launchers-lol Enjoy shooting folks. Even mix it up. Practice,practice,practice ! Have fun- Be safe!

When you can effectively run a double action revolver in double action mode and consistently get good combat hits on your target you can migrate to just about any trigger system on a semi-auto. You still have to learn the manual of arms, but no hiding behind things like needing your tuned 1911 trigger I prefer a crisp 4.5-5.5 lb trigger) or your Ghost or Apex super tuned Glock trigger (I'm fine with the stock 5.5 lb). Pick up a Beretta M9 or 92FS with new factory springs? You should be able to make that first DA shot count and handle the follow up SA shots. I'm 62 now and have been a shooter and gun geek since before I could buy my own firearm. Revolvers were prominent and being a poor boy that also meant any semi-autos usually had heavy triggers. You learned to shoot and run whatever you could get your hands on and enjoy it. Missing ain't fun. Hits are. Shooting a DA revolver quickly with a smooth trigger and making ragged holes in the target. Sublime.

Back in the day 70's-90s while a LEO, I had Colt Python 6", S&W 28, S&W 19, S&W 65, S&W 686, Ruger Security Six, Ruger Blackhawk to name a few. Using speedloaders, put lead down range about as fast as any semi-auto, accurately too.

James Yeager my department Illinois department of corrections still uses the discontinued S&W model 64 .38 special revolver for Correctional Officers. The parole agents and the armed tactical response team use glock 22 .40 caliber just like our state police. We are in the process of switching to Glock 19 for everyone (in IDOC I'm not sure if ISP has plans to move away from the .40 cal) except the armed tactical response team is switching to Glock 34s. I believe we are the last state department in the country using .38 specials.

I Like The Colt Python (Original), Colt Peacemaker, Smith And Wesson Model 29, And Smith And Wesson Model 27, But I Like Semi-Auto Handguns Better. Stock Revolver vs Stock Semi-Auto Handguns: 1) Semi-Auto Handguns Have A Round Capacity. 2) Semi-Auto Handguns Have Better Sights. 3) Semi-Auto Handguns Have Less Felt Recoil. 4) Semi-Auto Handguns Have A Better Selection. 5) Semi-Auto Handguns Are Easier To Load, Repair, Clean, And Lube. 6) Most Semi-Auto Handguns Look Better Than Most Revolvers. 7) Clearing A Malfunction On A Semi-Auto Handgun Is A Lot Easier Than Clearing A Malfunction On A Revolver. 8) Semi-Auto Handguns Are Actually More Reliable Than Revolvers.

Like everybody else, I've got a bellybutton. And like everybody else, I've got an opinion. In the old days, as a LEO, I carried a Model 29. And I shot it well. James is right, its an amazing gun. But if I had to defend myself with a 500 S&W, I believe I have to use it as a club. I'm probably just getting old, but the recoil is just too much for good follow up shots. At least for me. 44Mag yes! Beyond that, for most folks, they are just range toys. Not that I don't appreciate their power but I just don't consider them practical for self defense. And marginal for hunting. I mean if you're being charge by a bear, one shot may not stop it(or if you miss) and follow up shots need to be controllable.

In my opinion a revolver is easy to learn but hard to master. If it’s loaded all you have to do is point and squeeze the trigger and it will fire. However once you get past that it gets much more complicated. For example reloading within a reasonable time.

Sorry I disagree but agree.... I LOVE my revolver because if I wake up to a home invasion, I am NOT an expert. In that event I'm a guy who is half asleep and has adrenaline pumping through his veins. I'm not gonna think rack the slide or clear a possible malfunction. I'm going to wake up and start squeezing at bad things. As a side note an extra benefit with a revolver is to keep the first hole empty. So if I get my gun aimed at me that first squeeze is a nothing, but I know to keep squeezing till I hear bangs.
