I've experienced this personally. Been using red dots for years now, seemed to work quite well, I went back to irons and literally shoot better and faster, especially at close range. Wish I could tell James this personally. This dude was always WAY ahead of our time in the firearm industry. RIP James you're the man.

Why do you think it is that you shoot irons better than a dot now? Is it due to recoil and finding the dot after a second shot? Do you primarily carry with irons or a dot now? Genuinely curious
@trailertrashtactics
@trailertrashtactics Жыл бұрын
@Joshua Bracke I think a big reason for faster shots up close (as most self defense situations are) is because if you have defensive sights such as the amerigo hackathorns, you can see that big green or orange dot in your peripheral way before you get a sight picture with a dot. Since this post, I began using smaller moa dots for competition, and that has helped my accuracy a lot. Especially the 1 moa trijicon sro. I honestly think learning to steady a dot makes irons feel even more steady. They both have their place. As of now, I'm back to carrying with a dot because it's what I compete with and am very comfortable with. Although for self-defense, the little bit of accuracy loss with irons overall versus a dot may be worth the trade for speed up close and not having to worry about batteries, brightness settings, dirty lenses, etc.

I just shot a CCW match today. For the scenarios with targets within 10 yards, I didn't even look at my sights. I was target focused doing point shooting and the shots were solid. When I tried to find the dot , it slowed me down. It's my first Green Dot Sight, I normally carry irons. It's a bit easier at distance , but that's the only difference, I don't think I'm going to mill the slide on my main carry gun,

What kind of dot? My rmr 2s with some cat crap routinely go from a 50 degree vehicle to a 110 plus sec state humid outdoors without issue. The only time I can actually make it happen naturally (excepting taking it into the shower and not having the vent on) is sticking under actual refrigeration and going straight outside.

I have been a CCW holder for a bit now, and I love iron sights. The problem I am having is that my right eye can't pick up the front sight like I used to. I am finding that I have to work too hard to see a blurry front sight. I have taken pistol classes over the years, and I am going to try a red dot. I have tried corrective lenses, but to access my bi focal portion of my glasses forces me to cock my neck too far back for comfort. Getting old is a bummer. So I'm giving it a shot. To the crew carrying on James's legacy. Keep up the good work. I live out on the West Coast and have never attended a TR class, but I always respected James' insight into shooting and gunfighting. I am currently watching a lot of his old videos, and I am glad we have them.

Back up iron sights that make you look through the glass caused my PD some issues. most of the time it was not that the dot went down it was the glass was fogged, or covered in something else. And with that issue the back up front sight was invisible also. Cold AC in the car on summer nights was a big issue at the time (mid to late 2000's) with rifles coming from a cruiser rack. Anti fog helped, but I don't think I would want to look through glass on both guns, just in case that gremlin showed up in a fight.

My biggest issue on red dot vs irons/xs was the red dot fills up with lint/dust and gets scratched often as a carry gun. I just switched to xs big dots a month ago, lower profile and easier to conceal as well. Plus your not 400 for a dot and 400 for a milled slide on top of a 400 dollar gun...

My biggest problem with a red dot on a pistol is the lint trap that it is. Freaking nightmare trying to keep it clean. And also for me any little jiggle is magnified x10 vs iron sights. I will keep it on my nightstand pistol but daily carry.... No more.

I bought a G48 MOS just to see how it works. I found my experience to be the same as yours. Right out of the box I could put a magazine worth of rounds in the 4 and 5 rings if a FLETC target at 50 yards if I took my time. Without the dot I would be happy to hit the silhouette half time at that range.. However, that is not a very likely scenario. At realistic self defense ranges I was faster if a little less accurate with iron from the holster and that is the most important shot in a DGU. I am sure if I took that extra time I would be just as accurate. The more the shots I fired after the draw tended to favor the red dot. I found the bouncing dot to be a distracted when shooting on the move which made me slower and less accurate. I am sure the same thing happens with irons but being fixed in place gives a reference point. I will probably remove the red dot when I finish all my experimentation and just use iron sights.

Lastly I do not want the Po Po to have my nice red dot slided pistol in custody God forbid I ever get into a situation. Which brings me to my last point something I think about a lot, your carry pistol should be one that you have come to grips with having it confiscated if you ever had to use it. If you spent an equal time training with a red dot you'd be better than the same amount of time with irons. This is not up for debate and is why every professional organization that uses pistols is gravitating towards red dots. I think the biggest advantage besides NV is the fact dots do not require you to align multiple object at all. If you grew up shooting only dots on pistols you would argue why the hell would anyone use irons on a pistol because you got to align sights. Saying that, I carry a Glock 19 with XS F8 sights because it’s simple and for the distances I hope to use it I don’t need a dot.

You started to cover the reason why, involving close distances, but then shifted away from them. Is there any way that you could please demonstrate your reasons on a range? I know that a lot of people are better at learning by seeing it than by hearing it, myself included. If you dont want to or cannot for one reason or another, that's ok. In that case can you please explain a little more about your reasons? Either way, thank you.

So I have a m&p with a rds on I love it but what you said under stress I agree completely. I had crazy night in November someone tried to get in my house bashing the door and such I grabbed my pistol with a rds I have never seen the dot shake so much I’m still guessing from the range I was at I would have hit them if I needed to but it made me second guess the red dot. I love it target shooting but I switched to my Glock 19 for home defense and ccw

I just got my first optic ready pistol (Canik TP9SFx) with a Vortex Venom red dot. Like you, I thought it was gonna be a game changer like it was on my rifle. Nope! I’m starting to get use to it, but for conceal carry, no way. Why add more to an already crazy stressful situation. I’m comfortable drawing and quickly finding my target with the irons, so I don’t see it helping a whole lot in that situation anyway. Fun to plink with though.

First, I absolutely believe you know more than I do. I’m not in a position to argue, but this is my experience. My eyes suck. Bad. Focusing on a front site post is exceedingly difficult for me. Red dots solve that problem. So do big dots. But FOR ME the accuracy with a bug dot is far worse than with an RMR. I will have similar group sizes at double the distance with the RMR. Nope, they aren’t perfect. There are drawbacks to anything. But as I’ve worked through this myself, the RMR seems to work best.

I am in the same position, north of half a century and the eyes aren’t what they used to be. I use Red Dots on my range/target guns but not on my CCW. I practice with my CCW, without glasses, because I assume things are not going to go my way if I am ever in a gun/fight. I only care about hitting my target and having enough vision and awareness to not hit a bystander. Just my two cents and it may worth less.

At a minimum this is a topic that is debated amongst subject matter experts. That debate should, without a doubt, create a pause for anyone thinking about getting a red dot pistol. Personally I carry a gun with a RMR, but, at the point i made that decision I had about 800 hours of professional instruction under my belt. The dot is not a fix and not without some compromises.

I think dot might be a fix, when age starts to take effect on vision. It varies a lot from person to another, how severe it will be. For me at 45, shooting irons is starting to get tricky and achieving good accuracy from 25m is becoming clearly more difficult. ...and it definitely is not due to lack of practice or training. Glock MOS series is starting to look more and more tempting every day.

I agree there's no rush to switch to red dots, but if someone trained (properly) from the beginning with red dots, I think they will be able to perform just as well as they would have with iron sights. And I can see some other advantages such as someone with deteriorating eye sight.
