A robotic raspberry teaches machines how to pick fruit

Fruit-picking robots need a gentle touch. While a huge number of crops are harvested by machines, soft fruit like raspberries are usually collected by hand. To help robots gain the skills needed to pluck raspberries from the stem without crushing them, researchers have developed a robotic raspberry. It's a fake fruit containing a sensor which can measure and feed back on the pressures involved when both humans and robots grasp it. The idea is to allow researchers to work on developing their fruit-picking devices in the lab all year round.

Ah! Robotic Raspberry, a great band from the 80s with their classic album: Lavatory Therapy Horizon (featuring Robert Robinson). I particularly like: John the Revelator, Wrote the Book of the Seven Seals but One of them turned out to be a Sea Lion.

BTW, "labour shortages" is British English for "self-inflicted pain and a subsequent inability to fix it due to fear of one's own racist base." It's a marvellously efficient language, really.

Just like Florida farmers voting republican and scaring off their very own workers. Only to turn around and beg them to stay despite more laws passing that make it harder for them to live. They constantly make their own lives harder while never shouldering the blame. There's a video circulating with some old dinosaur saying "The farmers are ANGRY! You need to talk to your people and tell them to stay!" 😂😂 It's pathetic.

How many people do you know, who want a seasonal job, working in all kinds of weather, having to work far more productively than most of them can imagine - to be able to earn a decent wage. Not many. And when the fruit is ripe, it needs picked, even if it needs a 16-20 hour day to try to keep up. Many people these days find it a hardship to work more than 40 hours per week. That's my experience. I work in the food growing industry in Ontario, Canada. I am looking forward to robotic pickers coming on-line.

Appreciating their great effort though, a slight change of concept/tactics may be helpful in a practical sense. Loose grip + vibration/shaking motion. Good luck!

Use a vacuum. Suction them off.

That can harm the raspberries which ofc isn’t efficient for selling

@@Seal_pup Could be possible to control the strength and duration of suction, much as they are attempting with this form of force. Also to monitor how ripe and ready for ‘picking’ each fruit is. Growing raspberry bushes outside and untethered seems unhelpful too. Growing them so that the bracts of fruit are continually exposed (hanging down) with all the greenery being grown behind a mesh barrier above the fruit would help too. But lab grown, rather like vat meat, might make more sense in the long run. Avoid the whole concept of picking fruit from a bush entirely. Leave the bushes for the birds.
