A Rogue Legacy Retrospective

With Rogue Legacy 2 on the horizon, I wanted to go back and play the first one again, it was the first Roguelite I ever played a lot of. Does Rogue Legacy still hold up today against the likes of Dead Cells, Hades, and Gungeon? We shall see.

@@2Lainz I cheesed the last two bosses for Herodotus I used the flame barrier and for the John ( I can't spell his name ) and the fountain I equipped all level down runes so he was pretty cheeseable

I pretty much agree with the video. A majority of Rogue Legacy ended up being done better by all the games after it. A quality of life in some instances, better balance and gameplay in others. I believe it has it's place in the hall of gaming history, and it definitely worth playing at least once if people are fans of the genera. It's a history lesson, which is weird to say about a game that's from 2013.

My first roguelike was the OG binding of isaac and it was freakin amazing, the only downside was it got laggy after a shit ton of uprades bcs it was a flash game. I can highly recommend the 2nd BOI(yes) game though: BOI:Rebirth.

I played OG Isaac a little bit, for some reason it just didnt grab me like Rogue Legacy did. I definitely need to go back and give Rebirth a shot, I've only played a few runs on co-op.

Rogue Legacy was one of the first games I ever bought on steam, probably the third, just behind Medieval II Total War and Mount & Blade Warband. Damn, I love this game, I can fully understand what you mean with your criticisms, but personally I was rarely bothered by it. Aside from the contact damage, fuck contact damage and everything it stands for.

After stumbling across Rogue Legacy 2 and really enjoying it, I decided to look back at Rogue Legacy playthroughs and videos like this to reminisce on the original which I played as an adolescent. I obviously expected some degree of improvement, but I'm honestly blown away by how much of a step up the second is from the first. The aesthetics, graphics, storyline, feature variety, trait mechanics, and overall coherence is just leagues above the original. In hindsight/comparison, Rogue Legacy was pretty mediocre (although I'm sure their budget for RL2 was probably WAY larger), but it definitely gave Cellar Door Games (and developers of similar games) some solid working material to build a really cool genre.

Rogue Legacy 2 is to Hotline Miami what Rogue Legacy is to Hotline Milwaukee. Seriously, I played the first Rogue Legacy for easily 300+ hrs, and for a while it was one of my favorite games. I played Rogue Legacy 2 after it came out of Early Access, and it retroactively ruined RL1 for me.

Probably many people pointed this already, but you have to put a point in new upgrades as soon as theyre available, not start improving str for example, maybe that wouldve made the game more fun in the beginning.

I was on the hype for rogue legacy but I went there after playing Spelunky and Dead Cells I didnt play it much because the combat and the stats simply werent enough for my newly found standards (above line) and quickly dropped it. Encounters with anything were never as nuanced and filled with options as spelunky and the combat never felt responsive enough to blow a candle to dead cells so... Pulled a hard skip

Quick question, what would you say are your favourite roguelites/likes? And what popular roguelites do you not enjoy as much? Just to have a frame of reference for your reviews. I know, sorry for the "spammy" comments, it just seems that you're quite experienced in roguelites and I am just getting started. Also, love the content and want to make the KZbin algorithm happy.

My favorites are probably Risk of Rain 2 (I really like the co-op, 200 hours) and Vagante (co-op again, 50 hours). I have the most time in those, but there are a bunch of others that I played for about 20-25 hours I really enjoyed (Monster Train, Slay the Spire, Undermine, Space Gladiators). There's still a bunch of classics I don't have my experience in though.

The second game is Vagante, the door clip is Curse of the Dead Gods and the card choice clip was actually Monster Train. :)

Btw if you play Skul the hero slayer, if youve played rogue legacy enough, you will hear and see that it is the spiritual successor to this game. Rogue legacy 2 feels like it was made by another person, and a cash grab. but Skul feels like the group that made this game got their shit together and made another one.

Rogue Legacy 2 is not a cash grab lmao wtf? Their early access roadmap is extremely reasonable, and if you're like me and bought the game early knowing it was going to be a banger, it would have only cost you $19.99. A one time fee for as many new features, locations, classes and mechanics that they're working on is honestly insane. As someone who finds pro-consumerism to be extremely important in today's gaming landscape, my time with the game has been nothing but stellar.

@@2bussy I'm glad you had fun with the game! I really wanted to too. It's just the experience for me was like watching one punch man season 2 after loving the first season. It just didn't flow the same for me. I played the first rogue legacy religiously. The soundtrack was fantastic. And I bought rogue legacy 2 a while ago and tried it, and was quickly disappointed. Im glad they made a 2, I just feel like it's nowhere close to the same game and I only bought it quickly because of the name.
