What a beautiful chapel, it must have been magnificent when first built.

Always a pleasure to see those dark/limestone buildings. Honestly one of my favorite materials to look at.

There's a 'No Country for Old Men' or 'Blood Meridian' joke to be made here... seriously; Cromwell would have made a great villain. As to this chapel - it's marvelous. I love the mix of Romanesque with the steeply-pitched, Irish roof line. I'm glad preservation work continues, and thank you for bringing this lovely church to our attention. :)

@@Dorian-lq3up- when Cromwell died there should have been a terrible storm, and people said it was the devil that came to collect him

The Rock of Cashel is well worth a visit. Its on an amazing site easily visible for miles around. The old Cork- Dublin Road goes quite near it. Cahir Castle and the Swiss Cottage arent too far away either.

The frescos remind me of late Antique frescos located in the catacombs of Rome.

Why? Can those catacomb paintings at all compete with them?

This reminds me a bit of Emma Donoghue’s new book Haven.

On the Continent, the Rundbogenstil (Romanesque style) was associated with the Ottonian Holy Roman Emperors. Cormac may have wanted a style that denoted kingship.

Did the Vikings attack this church back in the days??

The Norsemen were no longer raiding Ireland by the time the Chapel was built.

It's really a shame that this place was white-washed, but it's still elegant in its own right.
