The designers gave so much detail even though they knew that they would not live to see the completed cathedral.

Seems like the Strasbourg Cathedral has always been overshadowed by Notre Dame de Paris and the Cologne Cathedral. To my shame, I had never even heard of the Strasbourg Cathedral untill I started watching this documentary. Thank you.

Same here. This build is innovative. I love how modern architects and engineers with their computers stil are in disbelief and awe over what they see.

I completely agree, Strasbourg Cathedral is indeed an overlooked masterpiece, however in 1310 Lincoln Cathedral’s central tower was rebuilt at a height of 271 feet (81 m), and an additional spire, completed in 1311 and bringing the total height to 525 feet (160 m). Many believe this made it the tallest building in the world, surpassing the Pyramids of Giza, a title it would have maintained until the construction of the Eiffel Tower in 1889, had its spire not been blown off in 1548 during a storm! Europe is blessed to possess so many incredible gothic cathedrals,

What an amazing Cathedral, we don't hear much about the Strasbourg Cathedral in the US. Truly a monument the Strasbourg people who built it and their Christian faith.

Don't forget that the spire was almost to collapse at the start of the 20th century. Ironaically it was a German who designed a new foundation and grand pillar in order to rescue the spire from collapse. In 1926 when the city had become French the necessary stabilisation works and reinforced pillars of the spire were complete. Most cathedrals with high spires have some sort of engineering to keep them upright. For example the spire of Ulm which is the highest had to be saved from collapse and stabilised by steel rods and clamps in a concrete new foundation. Most gothic structures were imperfect and had to be saved by exceptional 19th and 20the century engineering.

wonderful documentation! Thank you very much. But I have one correction to make: when Freiburg (Breisgau) was mentioned you did not show the right picture of this city. Please google Freiburg im Breisgau and see the cathedral. It's spire is called: the most beautiful helmet of christiandome and you will understand why. The spire of Strasbourg is ingenious, but the spire of Freiburg is just beautiful.

Two handsful of thumbs up for a great video.....but.... I have a small complaint. It was annoying to have to read the captioning to know what was being said. There were times I wanted to see the details of the building. Had to read and then rewind to see. Please just narrate it all in English. Still, a fantastic video.

A truly magnificent building but it definitely needs the second tower/spire added. For as a gothic cathedral it just simply looks wrong without it, as it defies the principle of gothic architecture.

I am not a fan of religion. But I understand religion to be a catalyst for many of the scientific disciplines today. Building engineering and architecture for instance. I wonder how many workers have been involved over the years.

No idea why I'm asking some people to respect their own ideals and values, a d the slightest issue a d people ate lashing out, nothing was fixed, nothing was resolved abd they kept going against their own values and made a staggering number of miscalculations and errors and losses, always came back trying to fix what they wouldn't accept was within their locus of control not mine and had to fix and stop, not by continually going against their own teachings and moral standards and general religious and cultural beliefs that nobody, at least within their own sphere of influence at least, largely speaking, seemed to accept they were in the wrong and were on the wrong trajectory abd keep it going, you don't get anyone to respect you like that nor will you ever, same as you don't make friends by strangling or forcing anything, that's not a friendship nor a workable agreement, that's a hostage crisis, no surprise it happened back to people and nobody in their sphere of direct influence give or take a bit accepted what the problem was so it escalated and kept getting bigger... I shouldn't have to ask for some things like this, especially on such polite terms, people can say whatever they like, I can't really be bothered. I'll always be enamoured with some religions, at least aspects of them but when you get dragged away from them and abused away, and pointing out what the values were and kept getting abused away then it could never work, not that I'd even need to be against it entirely, just the few idiots who kept it going wrong for person gain which raises a suspicious question, what was the issue after all than something wrong in relation to the whole topic of values and what people were trying to achieve, some things come with the territory, or lack of even, like wrongdoing abd accountability and salvation and the like, you can't treat people a certain way abd expect to get respected, this is so ridiculous and contemptible, this wasn't my problem to fix, it was for other people regardless of creed or affiliation...
