The township of Achtriachtan is marked on Roy’s military map of the mid-18th century in the heart of Glencoe but was probably also there at the time of the infamous Massacre in 1692. Survey work has identified five buildings, three enclosures and a grain-drying kiln. In this talk, Derek Alexander discusses the recent excavation work which has focussed on the uncovering a complete plan of one of the houses. The ground plan of this structure is forming the basis for the construction of a replica turf-house at the Trust’s Glencoe visitor centre.
Derek Alexander MA(Hons), MPhil, FSAScot, MIFA is Head of Archaeological Services at the National Trust for Scotland.
