Off grid living in Alaska has its moments of pure satisfaction but other times present constant challenges. The saying 'every cloud has a silver lining' couldn't be more true, after a week of painting our newly sided cabin in the wet weather we enjoy freshly harvested and utterly delicious honey from our bees, a special treat to end a tough week.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

The mosquito net ‘incident’ was so funny and what a good sport you are Eric for not editing it out! We all make these kind of mistakes in our lives and I was happy to see you having a good laugh about it - some of us quietly undo and redo before our partners find out or make up stories to show how it could happen to anybody….The house looks really good and kudos for sticking to the task as the weather conspired against you. I hope that your Summer hasn’t truly come to an end yet - it’s so beautiful and amazing that you get such long days to enjoy. Thanks again for sharing your interesting lives and challenges.

I came across your channel about 2 weeks ago and started watching from beginning. I just watched your honey extraction attempt. I grew up helping my grandpa with bees. He always did his extraction in attic when it was warm so the honey was more runny and easier to get out. I also remember he was watching us kids like a hawk so we would not spind too fast and ruin the frames. I remember him telling us to listen for the honey hit the sides and it should sound like a rain. He also had special honey uncapping fork. You uncap from underneath the caps up. We Love to take pieces of the caps with the little honey and suck on them like a candy. About chewing tobacco size. I hope this helps you. I love watching you.

I started watching when you first moved to Alaska and what a productive 4 years. The house is gorgeous! What a difference, and the fact that you painted the outhouse was the cherry on top! I've learned so much from you guys and it's something new in every video, whether it's names of local wildlife or the wonders of Kefir I'm excited every time you post. Thank you especially for the thoughtful way you present all the information, you speak at a perfect pace and clearly, the editing is really great but I have to admit, my favorite part is whenever I see Beau and those thoughtful eyes, how do you not kiss that head all day long. Those are 2 of the luckiest dogs I've ever seen. Thanks for all the videos. How's the orchard?

@emelineklick8824

@@SimpleLivingAlaska I’m thinking perhaps the water levels are too high. Most orchard plants such as apples, pears, peach (yes there are hardy peaches available now), apricots do not like wet feet. Planting them into a raised bed, example, minimum 15 inches above the normal ground level would help you significantly, 20 inches even better. Planted in a large container, at least 24 inches or larger in diameter, could also help. I think it’s worth trying. Here in Minnesota, Land of 10,000 Lakes, we have issues with high groundwater levels too, and need to evaluate that every time we plant a fruit tree.

It's time consuming, but there's something little satisfying when you can get a nice long strip to just peel off with the blade. Your garden is rockin. And I agree (as do a lot of viewers here) the house looks so nice with all of the work you put into it. Hopefully, you'll notice the added warmth retention in winter. Just a suggestion from the daughter of a large beekeeper, of over a thousand hives. One of my fathers basic rules was you never put more then 8 frames in the body you are using for your honey store. The reason for this is you want the bees to draw out the comb past the frame to make it easier to uncap and extract. He never put more than 9 frames in any super including the brood nest

Great vid, i have watched a lot of your videos and i really like what you guys have going on there. A little tip from a Butcher regarding your "Processing a Moose" Video, and the grinding of the meat; When you assemble the grinder, make sure to put som vegetable oil on both the holed metal disk and the blade, that way it wont dull the blade immediately when you start the machine. Second, make sure to have all your pieces of meat cut out and ready, the reason there is a tray on top, is to make sure you feed it constantly, even before turning it on put meat in the tube. That way you avoid friction and heat build up, (Which cause bacteria growth faster). Also running the machine without meat will wear it out fast and may cause it to breake down. - Hope its usefull. Love from Denmark.

I was watching some of your videos and saw the q and a. Your husband mentioned that living in alaska the hardest is the darkness. I grew up in western Alaska and I'm an alaska native. So one thing that helps my wife and I. Is Taking steams so if you need ideas for videos one thing you could do is make a steam house. It's one way to relax and wash up, and it also helps you wind down in the evenings. I promise you will have the best sleep ever. And the nice thing about steams is your in the right place for it. I myself have to travel 50 plus miles to get my logs. You live right there where you can just go literally 50 yards and get a log.

We enjoy watching all the projects. Honey extraction is an awesome time of keeping bees. I could relate to your struggles. It is important to try and get to a screened or secure spot to extract for many reasons. And a great tip when extracting in a small spinner is to spin slow in one direction. Flip the frames and spin a bit quicker, the frames weight to much to spin them quick on the first go. Since the honey is stored on both sides. And one last flip to clean them out. Great work. Honey is second only to maple syrup on this homestead. 👍👍

On the combs, buy a 9 frame spacer. It's already drawn out, but they'll draw it out more. Where that knife slices the caps off, let it drip, you'll catch it. But put in extractor, it's done in no time. Ambesol and orajel is the same thing as Sting Kill which is good for stings and burns. Get burnt, don't sit there and hurt, just put some ambesol and orajel on it. There is burn gel which stops the burn from progressing and still uses benzocaine. But ice will draw the heat out so less damage. If you contact Winters Apiary has Russians and Caucasians. Caucasians are real gentle. They have the longest tongue and mine would gather nectar in invalidate weather. Winters Apiary is in Tennessee. I had good results with the Buckfast bee too. Which B.Weaver apiaries has in Texas, but given your locale and climate, it's what Russians and Caucasians come from. Caucasians only being prone to Normal, which use that medicine for that.

I’m a new subscriber who has dreamed about having a little homestead and living in Alaska and I appreciate all your videos and you two documenting your experience living in Alaska. Many times we can fantasize about what it would be like to live somewhere and with your videos I’ve been able to truly see what it’s like to live off grid in Alaska and get a better idea of what I would be getting myself into. I appreciate all the work you put into your videos and you both have such a lovely homestead! 💖💖💖

The cabin looks so beautiful, just great work from you both. Congratulations too on the honey harvest ☺️ Watching your videos is one of my treats, I start my days early working outside from about 6am UNLESS Simple Living Alaska posts a video - then I sit down with a coffee & catch up on your news. Since I’m living off grid too now & kind of remote it’s so nice to feel connected with people who have similar lifestyle & values - makes me feel slightly more social! Always impressed with you both & looking forward to seeing your next video already 😅

I have had my girls/bees for a couple months now and its really interesting and I am always learning. I get the inkling that it will be a never ending process learning about bees. I love it and am fascinated by them. Thank you for sharing your lovely harvest. You have taught me a lot about gardening and I have been doing so for 15 years. I bought alfalfa meal because of you and it really has made a difference along with my homemade compost. Thank you for being a inspiration. :)

From my experience you have to balance the weight of your frames. Just like balancing a washing machine with a heavy load. Move the frames around until you get the best weight distribution. If not then the honey extractor will jump and fly around like there is an earthquake going on. It’s also less likely to destroy the comb if it’s balanced. You can also do it in smaller batches as well to make the balancing act easier. You don’t necessarily have to completely fill the extractor with 9 frames. To much weight on one side will cause havoc when it starts to spin.

I love seeing the moon in the door! The best! I like your color scheme on your home. So crisp & clean looking with the color you chose for the door just compliments the home. The porch will look nice too. What a good feeling to get the outside done. Looks so nice. I seen the Queen finally. Now I know what to look for. The honey sure is pretty. The flowers are so beautiful like a kaleidoscope of colors when put all together. Tea sounds welcoming. The waffle looked delicious Eric. So happy for you both. Enjoyed your video. I had to laugh at the old man busily digging in the puddle in the background. They're just like kiuds. I liked that netting on your front door. Neat!

Electric extractors spin much slower than Eric was trying to do manually. Our instructions says to spin up to 10 minutes at the slower speed. Sorry about your blowouts. We've had them too. Also, if you space the 10 frames in the hive box so that they touch each other (a little extra space on the outer edges is fine), you'll find that the hot knife works better as the comb is all the same thickness. As far as more than one queen in a hive, the oldest one will kill all the others. There's always so much to learn about bees. That's why its such a great hobby with a sweet ending. Nice finish on the house.

Loved the video! The hot knife is not really designed for precision de-capping, you need to have it flat against the wood and apply even pressure down in a sawing motion. There is more wax removed but that can easily be macerated and drained. This also makes the frames more balanced as well which aids in extracting. I think the reason you had the blowout was because of the odd shaped, bulging comb which caused it to unbalance. For any spinning extractor, you need to start out at a slow speed for a minute or so. This allows some of the honey to come out and it kinda self balances, but a good strong grip on the outside is always a good idea.

For the extraxtor it might help to make sure that it's balanced evenly so putting 9 in ( or even 4 and 4 might've been easier for the machine to handle) even if one is empty to distribute the weight a bit more evenly within. I never really used one that wasn't full, but I use a lot of centrifuges and the rattling and all is very similar to how they behave if they aren't evenly loaded. Also it can act up sometimes if it's not standing on even ground.

I worked in my school holidays for my cousin with his bees and see a few things that may help. Only use the new foundation sheets with wires melted into the wax for strenght. This saves wasting the bees effort making that they could be gather honey instead. Warm the frames before decapping them, makes it much easier. The hot knife is fantastic. Make sure the wooden sides are used to slide the knife down. Gives even depth to the honey comb. Did you warm the seperator first...makes the honey flow better. Hope this is usefull to you.
