Economic prosperity comes from manufacturing… and to have viable manufacturing we need reliable cheap baseload power…… well done chaps for discussing this important topic.

Non of the majors are paying their fair share of taxation in return for exploiting our gas and oil reserves. No other industry gets to depreciate at their own estimated replacement costs on investments. It’s a complete nonsense and very poor economics for Australia.

Woodside paid US$3.74b in taxes and royalties to governments last year, and made US$1.7b net profit after tax. Seems to me that governments are getting their fair share of the revenue.

As a comparison in 2023: - BHP: US$13.8b in taxes and royalties, US$12.9b NPAT - CBA: A$5b in taxes, A$10.2b profit.

The only reason you think it's not a fair share is because all the politicians and bureaucrats spend the majority of taxation on themselves. They are the problem, not the resource companies.

Another interesting discussion and appreciated. However, the views on nuclear and costs are not supported by reality. Too much short term politics. If society was interested we would have had an honest discussion commenced ten years ago. Renewables are so much cheaper and quicker it’s a nonsense. Suggesting a nuclear submarine costs $4.5 billion is misleading at best. Private enterprise won’t do anything without a guaranteed return of 20% minimum. Teams to build things are in short supply and getting worse with all our kids being job ready trained as barista’s.
