I have to say, that this is one of my favourite places, which you both have visited! Many years ago , when I lived in Roslin and my children were young, I took them here often on pic-nics, as the peaceful surroundings allowed them to run off their excess energy. The outstanding beauty of the land around gave them plenty of space. and the castle was always very peaceful and quiet. I was drawn to it's wonderful history, but you have researched into it a lot further, making it even more interesting and informative! There has been a lot more remedial work carried out by Historic Scotland since then, making it even more interesting, as well as safer too! I have been a follower of your videos and work, from quite early on, and the content of each,mproves each video, you both create!..... Your research into all the historical facts of places, is even better than we Scots can achieve, and your dedication of truth is highly commendable! Crighton Castle, and an earlier Poltalloch house, are at present my favourites, due to me being brought up near Oban in Argyll, and living in the south, near Edinburgh for many years now! My hopes and dreams are that you recover from your illness, caused by "Coronovirus", and come back to Scotland, hopefully to carry out more work like this. So haste Ye back, and come and see us as soon as possible, as we need people like yourselves, devoted to let society know of these wonderful venues, and recording each and everyone of them! Watching again. This is one of the prettiest desertified castles I've ever seen. I've always liked pinkish bricks and stones used in the building of homes. This castle is so beautifully laid out, I can imagine the interior being plastered, painted, and beautiful painting and tapestries hung on the walls I think this my favorite castle so far.

It was saved very nicely from final ruin by the government and amazingly is public now. Not that anybody would know as nobody is ever there. The sandstone is great as when it ages it changes colors, so you get these layers of ages of building where you can see color shifts.

This is a fantastic presentation. My family name is Crichton (now spelled Creighton). I knew of Crichton Castle ruin but have not visited it. While touring Edinburgh Castle I came upon the Black Dinner story before the GoT episode, so it was great to hear of the aftermath and descendants of William Crichton. The connection to Bothwell Castle was a surprise since my great-great grandfather Robert Crichton was born in Bothwell in 1805.

Hi Desertify great history this is probably the most interesting history connected castle in Scotland, you have captured the very essence of medieval castle life also the tour is of this brilliant Crichton Castle, history ,, i studied at UNI got my degree in Medieval Uk history, also our US history they had odd bed partners in those dark days to get favour from the then Royalty,, ie here catholic Mary Queen of Scots who Elizabeth 1st wanted dead,,, back to castle you capture these ruins to perfection the stone staircase on 30.4 how worn the centre steps are how many courtiers have used those stairs, what intrigue skulduggery, murder just for gain you have included every ounce of history you are KZbins best historian soooooo much detail i thankyou Ed signing out,,,, from Sierra Vista Arizona USA

@19:32, There is the prettiest brickwork I've ever seen. It's even more elegant than the diaper pattern that became popular in England. The Diamonds look so perfectly matched. Would you happen to know if they are carved stone or brick molds?

That I do not know, but the pillars below it are craved sandstone pieces, so they likely are the same hand construction. It's quite a sight.

Great history, gruesome and complicated. This is such an interesting ruin. I love how each section runs into each other and winds around each other. I seem to b drawn to the older sections. I luv the older stone masonry, it is rougher, but as u say, is more solid ,. Tht diamond wall stands alone, I don't think I've ever seen anything like tht in a castle ruin. It is so isolated, it felt like u and thinkmaster were the only people left on Earth. I did have sort of a sinking in.the pit of my stomach as u went thru. Had to stop and reset my phone in the middle and tht feeling went away, but it came back when I came back on. U cld feel a lot of bad things happened there. Great explore, quiet, no throngs of tourists so u cld really get a feel for it. My kind of place. Thank you! Hope u r feeling better.

Sorry I am late watching, although I shared it immediately when premiered some real life matters prevented me watching myself untill now. God, I really like this castle. A enormous amount of money and resources went into its construction. When it was at its heyday it must have been a formidable sight to see. I can almost see it in my mind after all that you told us about it. Glad to see that conservation efforts are in place. Structural supports in smart places. I loved that ancient graffity wall. @@dianheffernan3436 The dungeon is totally abandoned and sealed off due to danger. The rest has seen work over the decades. I have seen this in other sites where sections close as they cave in. One of the spiral stairs is also shut down recently due to weak structural integrity.

We were very lucky to not run into others. I find the best places for history and exploring are mostly unknown. Tourists seem to flock to Inverness, Edinburgh, Loch Mess, Eileen Sonam Castle, Glasgow and Skye. If you avoid them you're often the only one around. Truly a special location that deserves more notice.

There are lots of tales and legends of this. I am also guessing it has become rather deadly. I'm always fascinated with the sealed off ruined parts. Cork Gail has a number of these you can look into. Long crumbling halls of cells running off into the darkness.

The arrow slits in castles are known as balistrarias. A slit or loophole for crossbowmen or arbalester an arbalest is the name of the crossbow itself. A tall slit is for the longbows men and the recess behind the slit/loop is called an embrasure so that the users had room to move.

I checked and it might be the editing I did to the wind. It was constantly blowing there so all the clips have a background noise reduction done to them, which might produce the noises.

@@DesertifyUrbex Ooo! That sounds rough. I have a black sponge and a "dead cat" for cutting out wind and such on my Zoom recorder. You carry such a high a quality camera. There is surely something on the market for cameras. I'm just guessing because technology is so advanced now.

@@lindalee7322 Sadly the main cam we use lacks external sound plugins, but the newer one that I bought with its whole rig has an external mic with a "dead cat" screen. It's rough as we either have to accept worse sound or worse image quality between the two.

He taught me how to think outside the box, and create what i needed if the specific item wasn't available in stores. He passed on back in 2002. I sure miss him. i love how everyone forgets about wales lol.. we are more famous for our castles but only amongst those who are aware we have the most amount in europe. due to the normans needing to work harder to suppress us, and people forget the normans are viking/frankish to lol. i know this isnt a video about wales, but when you said like ireland scotland is famous for her castles... well they aint got as many as us lol.

It is funny you mention this. I have actually just moved to Wales to complete my circuit of Celtic areas I will be covering. Most near future explores will be in your homeland. I have always loved Wales for it's castles. Ireland has many more, but most are classed as tower houses or stone keeps. Not the massive and great works of Edward I or the Welsh princes. I think you might enjoy what we have in store :)
