The only real difference between the HD28V and the reimagined HD28 is the neck. Mod V and MLO. Other than that and the other difference being long and short saddle respectively, it’s the same guitar as far as box goes. I own the new HD28 and played it against its older brother the HD28V and I honestly couldn’t tell the difference in tone - which I probably shouldn’t. The neck was the biggest difference between the two imo.

Very surprised you didn't mention and talk about top brace placement differences and the impact on tone such as the HD28V F.S., D41A rear shifted etc..73' D28 brace placement

I sort of did... right when I was talking about the CS-BG-16. I reached over and said "This one is forward X and the rest are rear X" and then I said "The BG is really like a 30's and the rest are basically post 40's." The HD-28V IS a forward X which is in keeping with "it's really not a vintage replica at all" theme. There is no vintage Martin with a 1 11/16" neck, forward X, and weird scalloped braces thus the HD-28V is sort of mis-mash. In addition, one could easily argue that the unscalloped portion almost negates the forward X and for that reason, I didn't really think of it as "forward X". I can only talk about so much stuff and I was focusing on the rosewood and top woods more.

Great video comparison. My HD-28V is a 2005 model. I've not noticed any deformation in the top, behind the bridge yet. Hopefully that doesn't happen to mine. This was my only bucket list item and I couldn't be happier with this guitar. I don't like the tuners though. 4 of them are very loose (they rattle) with no strings on. After I get it strung, they work great and no longer rattle. I think Martin should have designed them more like the Waverly tuners, with full support. It's hard to explain here...lol.. Sorry for the long comment. Again as usual, this was an outstanding video and I could definitely hear the differences in the different guitars.

Martin doesn't make tuners. Those are Gotohs stamped with CF Martin. They only partially enclose the tuner shaft and that's where a lot of the looseness comes from. You can replace them with either Grover 18:1 or Waverly and both will pretty much drop in. You might need to use a small needle file to elongate one of the holes so that it fits the stock holes but that's easy to do. I can't remember if it's Grover or Waverly you'll have to elongate but it's like 1/2 a screw diameter. Replace the bushings with the ones that come with your tuner... the current bushings are stupid shallow.

@@Bryankimsey Exactly what I was planning. I am looking at a Waverly brand set. Thanks again.

Man, I cant decide which I like better the 41 or the 48!!

Great reviews Bryan, do you think the E strings are a little too close to the edge on the CS 16, ie: MLO 1.3/4"neck profile?
@Bryankimsey4 ай бұрын
Just a hair. I'm not pulling the strings off but I'm considering a new nut with a little narrower spacing. I really like the feel of slightly narrower spacing on a wider neck.

I kinda preferred the 48 today

I'm not gonna argue with that! :)

Tonewise 1) HD28V (but the open G string has a Sitar fault that needs sorting) 2) 41A 3)48 4) 16 5) 73. Great fiddle tune playing btw!
