As someone who is learning creative writing and aspires to write historical fiction, I think the structure of this film is BRILLIANT. Disney could never, (ironically, the creators of this film were once fired from disney because they were 'not creative').
@thempress-ro Жыл бұрын
Don Bluth was one of Disney's _best_ animators, and I have a theory he was actually "too" creative for Disney, because he wanted to go darker and talk about themes that Disney wasn't comfortable with. I think they were threatened by him. They made a HUGE mistake letting his ideas wither like fruits on the vine and letting him go. He previously worked on films like The Fox and The Hound, Pete's Dragon, The Black Cauldron, and Robin Hood to name a few. When they let him go, his "unfriendly" ideas lead to films like Anastasia, The Secret of NIMH, Thumbelina, All Dogs Go To Heaven, The Pebble and the Penguin, An American Tail, and he started The Land Before Time series. These could never top Disney's market dominance, but a lot of people hold these movies in highest regard, higher than Disney in some spots, as some of the _best_ animated features of the 80s and 90s. Don Bluth, MASTER of animation.

Yeah and now Disney has stolen back the creativity from them. The amount of people over the years that thought this was a Disney film. Now it technically is but they didn't do it. It's cheating, lazy and greedy of Disney 🫤

I firmly agree and I’m constantly in awe of the fact that it doesn’t end with the restoration of monarchy, or the “old order” that is such a norm for princess stories. Its a princess story where the heroine decides not to be a princess, because its not what she, the audience, or the world of the film need anymore.

I like these kinds of movies because they get people interested in seeking the history behind them out for themselves, not because they necessarily depict everything accurately (this movie irked me by not even saying the word "communism" or "communist" among many inaccuracies, but I still liked it).
@TheRachaelLefler8 жыл бұрын
I guess it is better to avoid those awkward "mommy, what's a communist" conversations, but we can't coddle kids too much. Bad things happen and kids have to learn about them sometime.
@DCdabest7 жыл бұрын
Rachael Lefler Yeah this movie does gloss over some complex stuff. Not the least of which being that the Romanovs weren't exactly tip-top people. Although what came after wasn't that great either.
@TheRachaelLefler7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's such a dark, grim epoch in history to make a Disney-style kid's musical about. Much like Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame.
@DCdabest7 жыл бұрын
Rachael Lefler True. But Disney did a great job of adapting it and keeping quite a few of the original themes, albeit a lot less nuanced and simplified for the kids' movie. Anastasia weaves it's own tale out of the threads of urban legends and fairy tale surrounding the Romanovs. It all works out though. Murdered by Bolsheviks makes a lousy ending to a film and a life :/
@TheRachaelLefler7 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah. I think what's good is that it gives kids a reason to study the actual history/literature. :)

Does it matter whether it's historical or not? It's an awesome movie with a beautiful rags-to-riches story that captivates something in everyone. Even if it's not true, it's exactly what this song is talking about... a legend, a mystery; something more to talk about. It's a nice little piece of storytelling.... even history is over fifty percent fiction.
@leggylesbian Жыл бұрын
Technically it is based in history, for a long time there was a rumor Anastasia lived and an insane woman who claimed to be her, so even though it’s a cartoon and things are obviously made up for a story the premise is very much based on a historical myth. A lot of them actually, there was a smear campaign against Rasputin because he had a lot of support so they labeled him a devil worshiper. Also Rasputin and some of the songs even bring up historical facts which I find so freaking interesting to see them blend it together with the obvious children story

Wonderful movie. Too bad the real history was much more grim. Anastasia never survived the revolt and all her main family members were executed all at once. She was 17 when she died. If only this movie was the truth (with the exception of Rasputin. He was creepy, but I don't think he was evil or actually hated the Romanavs as far as I know), but real life isn't as grand or happy like a fairy tale or a rumor. But I like to think this movie is a tribute to the Grand Duchess and the life she could've had if she had escaped or had been spared. At least her name lives on.

It's a sad story overall.
@angeladavidson23506 жыл бұрын
Guys, this movie was not made to be historically accurate. It's a kid's movie. And an excellent one at that. They did a great job of portraying the rumor of Anastasia possibly have surviving the murder of her family and showing a more optimistic side to the story. Pocahontas isn't historically accurate either, and people love it. The best part of this movie is the music, which is probably the part kids love the best as well.
