A's Owner John Fisher is a Con Man

The MLB owners unanimously approved the A's leaving Oakland and SiriusXM's Damon Amendolara (D.A.) goes scorched Earth on why John Fisher is a con man. Most of the national media doesn't care enough to consider Fisher refused to invest in the team and the stadium, thereby guaranteeing empty seats. He then pointed at the lack of attendance and ballpark weaponizing it against the city of Oakland and A's fans. Meantime, there's no guarantees in Vegas, which will be the smallest in MLB. The gameplan is sloppy in the relocation, and Fisher never put a good faith foot forward towards the Bay Area. Subscribe for more videos from D.A., who is sure to continue exposing Fisher for the con man he is.

Fisher was buddies w/ Selig. Got the team. Reggie Jackson formed an ownership group that included Bill Gates and Paul Allen and told Selig they would pay 25% more than the top bidder. Selig still let the team go to Fisher. Imagine if Reggie's group bought the A's. None of this BS would happen. The A's might be a top tier baseball team. MLB as a whole would be better for it. Instead Selig chose the latter.

It's wild how thousands of baseball "fans" are just blaming the fan base. As if we as fans, have a say so in the product on the field. Oakland A's fans are not easily fooled. But literally a man, in Fisher who is worth $2.62 billion dollars. Is asking for more money so he doesn't have to pay is such a ridiculous privilege move. It's like going to a food bank so you don't have to pay for groceries, when you can afford to buy the whole store. And like you said, people buy it. Oh the fan base sucks. No - we are too smart to be fooled by rich man tendencies. I'm glad there are people out there who truly understand the situation. I have a theory that this move is secretly for the Giants, since GAP Inc. is a SF based company.

To be fair, as an outsider looking in you can see open seats and an empty stadium often for A’s games and I want to say it was talked about at times this season by announcers or play by play ppl. So it’s probably easy for ppl to see it that way. The A’s aren’t really competitive so it looks like that’s at fault too. But it doesn’t matter what others think, he was going to bone the fans anyway. I’m a Red Sox fan, the A’s were nearly a minor league team to call players up from or a major league draft for all the teams who signed away A’s players, what’s sad is some of those teams could’ve been monsters for years. The talent they pumped out was sick, and they kinda did that through the decades having a team that was successful and dynasty like even if they didn’t win the World Series, the 70s had teams, then the later 80s had teams, the 2000’s had some teams and some rosters that if they stayed together would’ve been just insane. Idk if Fisher came after that or what, but if he did that’s when they stopped creating monsters or near monsters. When they competed they had fans, and they had the players multiple times, they even had money ball too. Seems like everybody benefited from the A’s but the A’s and their fans, even now. But ppl who get baseball know, and if not they probably don’t want to know. I remember when leagues wouldn’t dare put a team in Vegas. Anyway, A’s fans have my condolences

@@gordonshumway5933 I saw my first A's game in 1970 win or lose the stands were full, the 3 things that hurt them the most was fisher didn't care, fisher didn't care and fisher didn't care he bought into the stadium but refused to fix anything (Yes the taxpayers are part owners still) he turned the team into MLB training camp, never paid players what they were worth, never picked up any free agents, once players made a name in baseball they were gone to places like New York or Chicago, fact of the matter is he wanted his new stadium on the ballot built under taxpayer bonds again. Yes we have a huge market that extends to fans driving in from Reno, but truthfully under our job market it was a special outing for a lot of fans. And nobody can ever give me a good reason why the taxpayers should have to pay for billionaires stadiums to watch millionaires (Except Most A's) play games.

This is NOT the fault of the fans. Fisher wanted to tank his team, like you said, to be able to get the other owners to go along with his grift. And they did it. I've been saying this for months - the vote allow the A's to move was NOT a vote to allow the A's to move. This was a vote to allow for Milwaukee to complain about the lack of public money available so they can threaten to leave. Same for the White Sox. Same for Tampa. Same for ANY OTHER team that is looking to get a new park with public money that isn't getting as much as they desire. These billionaire children are all pissed off and are looking to take their toys to other sandboxes. That's all. And now A's fans don't have a team anymore. If I was a fan, I'm done as of today. I'm not going to games in 24. I have no idea where they'll end up in 25, 26, and 27, but I hope Oakland tells them to screw. Make them find somewhere else to go. They're gone. We have ONE small hope here in the conversation - Schools Over Stadiums in Nevada. I believe they need about 103,000 signatures to get this A's issue on a ballot so they can have the state deny public money going toward the A's. And this doesn't mean that the teachers would get the money, but they would certainly prevent it from going to the A's. Most of the population in Nevada is in the south so they need to get 75% of the signatures from people in that region which should be a bit easier. It's the north that has a spread population and doesn't care as much about Vegas...that is until they start hearing that the public money THEY pay into the system is going to fund a ballpark that is coming from California. Let's get the word out. Let's get them some signatures. I'm not even an A's fan. I'm a baseball fan and Oakland fans do NOT deserve this shit.

This whole situation makes me angry. On one hand, properly run, and with a new stadium which was looking likely, Oakland can be a terrific fan base. We've seen it. Remember that 20 game win streak and how packed the Coliseum was? John Fisher just ran the franchise and the A's brand into the ground. I'm ashamed he got all of the owners and the Commissioner to buy into his con. Oh the other hand, I predict that Las Vegas will be another Miami - one of the worst choices for a baseball team in history. From what I've been reading (I have family there), the fans either actively don't want the A's or are just utterly nonchalant about the team So give it ten years - then where will this A-hole try to move it?

Thank you Damon for all that you’ve done to stick up for us A’s fans. So many other fanbases simply haven’t bothered to learn anything about what John Fisher has subjected A’s fans to or the A’s history of trying to leave Oakland over the last 28 years (and part of that is due to the media making blanket statements without giving any context), and I want to thank you the most for bringing up the Raiders and Warriors. SO MANY people love to say “Oakland lost 3 teams in 5 years” when completely ignoring the context. People also forget Fisher made it pretty hard on the Raiders trying to get a stadium in Oakland. I made a lengthy video on the subject of A’s ownership, and went into extreme detail on every single thing A’s fans have had to endure. Its on my channel and is called “The Death of Oakland Baseball: A History of A’s Ownership”, and if anyone has a lot of time to kill and wants to learn more about how terrible A’s owners have been, you should give it a watch.

don't forget the city of oakland spent hundreds of millions in the mid 1990s to renovate both the oakland coliseum and oakland arena & those two deals basically blew up in their faces which the city is still paying for til this day coliseum renovations - 200 million, 375 million in today's dollars arena renovations - 120 million, 235 million in today's dollars basically 600 million in 2023 dollars money spent to renovate two sports venues in a few years span of one another and two teams were leaving even before the a's chose their waterfront site in nov 2018 you can see why oakland city govt was hesitant to spend anymor public money on another sports venue yet they've raised what the a's initially asked for in infrastructure money in public grants to get the ballpark built, 400+ million, with more on the way and when the a's did finally pick a ballpark site in oakland in nov of 2018 instead of fremont or san jose which are two areas of the bay area they set their eyes for almost a decade previously since 2006, the pandemic hit and delayed everything for almost 2 years what then changed? like most things now everything got more expensive and more importantly GAP stock has plummeted so this idiot cheap owner can't afford his massive 12 billion dollar project anymore that he initially wanted, even though he could've downsized the waterfront project near downtown oakland to make it cheaper and more affordable as the city of oakland has made it clear and stated if all the a's wanted was a ballpark with a smaller baseball village and development surrounding the venue they were more than fine with that option and if later the entire full development could've been built out when it made more financial sense, then again do it but when vegas came in throwing hundreds of millions of free public money at him ... the nepo baby finally found his new sugar daddy to help pay for a new ballpark that again he can't afford on his own be it in oakland or even las vegas blame the real reason why the a's are leaving oakland ... this cheap nepo baby owner who hasn't done anything to attract or keep fans to the ballpark for nearly the 20 years since he's owned the team telling his GM to sell off star player anytime they became too expensive, hell look at the MLS team in san jose that he owns and how they've been routinely in the bottom 1/4 in team payroll and in the standings since he bought the team even after getting a new stadium in the 2015 which recently the org said is "outdated", again who's fault is that they came up with an outdated design ... again don't blame oakland and certainly not the a's fans locally who've dealt with probably one of the worst if not the worst owner in all of pro sports here in the USA

The Oakland teams were marketed as the “blue collar” teams and these owners and leagues don’t want the blue collar fan anymore. Gone are the days where you can tailgate with your own beer and BBQ. They want corporate workers and high end bars and restaurants for them to go to. People can blame the city of Oakland but they are at a huge disadvantage compared to San Francisco. RIP Oakland A’s I will not be following you to Vegas. That 10 year lease they signed was the beginning of the Raiders leaving and the 50 % Coliseum land was sold to them in good faith and they leaving and keeping their half it’s a straight robbery if you ask me.

The Raiders have always been nomadic around California. The Warriors were never just Oakland's team. Ever since leaving Philadelphia they've been the Bay Area's team. They are still in the Bay Area. They didn't really move IMO. Ever since leaving KC where they were never rooted the A's have been Oakland's team. Not the Bay Area as a whole. San Francisco has their own team. This is absolutely travesty that this has happened. I'm not even American let alone Canadian and I'm devastated. I'm not even going to go into the Golden Seals debacle. John Fisher also owns the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS. He got a new stadium built exactly the way he wanted it and paid for by the city of San Jose along with a bunch of retail development that he wanted. In the 10 years since, the Earthquakes have ranked dead last in player payroll and only finally made the playoffs this year. And now Fisher is claiming his soccer stadium is "flawed" and he's losing money on a stadium that he had built for him in exactly the way he wanted it. If you think Fisher will all of a sudden start investing in the team's roster and put a watchable product on the field in Vegas, think again. He will continue to go cheap on his roster, not sign free agents, and trade away good players before they do get expensive in free agency or arbitration. Then he will plead poverty and get his revenue sharing check from MLB, and then pocket the check like he always has.

Fisher has found a town where losing is a business model. Have fun with him Loss Vegas!

Mark Davis, owner of the Raiders, blames Fisher for making them move to Vegas. Davis wanted to completely renovate/rebuild the Coliseum and was negotiating with the city but Fisher beat him to the punch and extended the lease by another ten years without paying any money towards maintenance (so the story goes). Fed up with Fisher's slimy business practices, Davis moved the Raiders to Vegas. Now Fisher is only interested in farming players while intentionally tanking the A's. He'll buy/draft bottom-tier players, wait until their game improves, then sell/trade them away while pocketing the money. The A's as a whole have increased in valuation but only because Fisher continually sells off the team's best players and he puts in no money for actual decent talent. That's why the A's are constantly in last place for payroll. Fisher is a damn cheapskate.

If MLB was really interested in the inner city and investing in the black community, they would have built a stadium on their own. Then helped create the business campuses around it. All their talk is just PR.

The A's attendance in Oakland for their 54 years has been below American League averages for each year, except for 9 years. Even in 74, their 3-peat year, they had next to the worst AL attendance. That suggests the stadium, team performance, and owner are not the fundamental problems. The market is. Besides the Bay Area #10, only the top 3 markets, NY, LA, and Chicago have 2 MLB teams. The A's tried for a stadium in the Bay Area for over 20 years. More recently, the financial and political conditions are driving people and businesses out of California. Several owners have spoken and given their agreement with the relocation. They are smart, intelligent businessmen and were not conned.

Not conned? They WERE the cons. There's $500m on the table in Oakland to build or renovate. Fisher left for $380m in Vegas, where he is going to have a market less than 1/3rd the size. He is also going to have to spend far more on his stadium because it will need a roof and a/c. In exchange he can build a 30k stadium on a 9 acre site in a city where he will be competing with multiple other professional sports and will get perhaps half of the RSN rights fees he gets now. Literally everything about this move is stupid. MLB's own market report shows Vegas as a hugely questionable market for baseball. BTW, more than half of the teams in the AL have "below average" attendance. That's what happens when you have 5-6 teams that can draw 30-40k on avg and a whole bunch who can't. Should they all move?
@Bob-Wt
@Bob-Wt 8 ай бұрын
@@jeelsvealnerve1163 On a given year, half are below average. But the A's were below average for each of the 54 years, except for 9 years. Teams that consistently draw more in top 3 markets, versus Bay Area #10. Regardless of the Vegas market, projections way will be better than Oakland, which is a dying decaying city. Raiders have the highest gross ticket sales in the NFL. All MLB owners not stupid. BTW - google Schnitzer Steel August fire, and consider if a stadium could be build adjacent. That was in the Oakland proposal to MLB in July. Prior to August fire but records of numerous preceding fires.

To help conserve energy/power, CBS should just start broadcasting from Noon Eastern time, when Jim Rome comes on. Can't listen to that new morning show, Nothing there. Why? Because they refused to give a blank check to a pissant lying failson like Fisher? There is enough money on the table to get a stadium built in Oakland. Fisher took less money from Vegas, where his stadium will be vastly more expensive because it needs a roof and air conditioning. This is all down to one person: John Fisher. I am glad he is gone, but I feel sorry for the Vegas fans who have to put up with him (if he ever gets there) from now on.

To all of the people blaming the fans of the Oakland A’s for the A’s relocating to Las Vegas. Let me just say SHAME ON YOU!!!!! Why you go and see a truly terrible team play in the worst ballpark in the majors. I went to the Oakland Coliseum back in 2010 to see the Boston Red Sox play the A’s and frankly it was a dump even than. This was after I went to see the Giants play at what was then AT&T Park and the difference was night and day. I have been to AT&T Park many times since, but I have never been back to the Oakland Coliseum. Even when the A’s have been playing the Red Sox or the Giants I never went to the Oakland Coliseum. It was just that bad. Plus Fisher just wanted the A’s in Las Vegas no matter what and what can the fans do about that. Well nothing at all. Heck they don’t even know who is going to play for them until it’s announced. So I don’t blame the fans for the A’s relocating to Las Vegas.

The main reason the A's are leaving is because the city of Oakland did not build a new facility or maintain the existing facility (coliseum). If Vegas doesn't follow through and build a new stadium, then the A's will move elsewhere. MLB is a business and if they can get a municipality to build a new stadium at taxpayers expense, they will do so.
@jeelsvealnerve1163
@jeelsvealnerve1163 8 ай бұрын
Wrong. Fisher is required to pay into a stadium maintenance fund as part of his sweetheart lease at the coliseum. He is hugely in arrears on those payments... so he's complaining about the state of the coliseum while shorting the maintenance fund he is required to pay into. There is $500m on the table in Oakland (or was). More than enough to renovated the coliseum with literally none of his money required. Or, he could take that and build a new stadium on the same parcel. Instead, he left for $380m in Vegas, a market vastly smaller than the size of the Bay Area, and his stadium will cost twice as much because it has to have a roof. Oh, and his RSN rights in Vegas will be - at best - 30% of what he gets from his current deal. He's an idiot.

Well the bigger con "people" were the City officials in Oakland and the Bay area media who let them get away with this ineptitude. Government bureaucracy, political infighting, a lack of vision, lawyers and Union leaders gave Fisher the opportunity to make this happen. That's the real tragedy. The proper actions years ago would have avoided all of this. Today is the final outcome of years of mistakes.

Of course, YOU would show up and push this BS narrative of how it's all the City Government's fault, yet you can't explain why you believe that Oakland should've just rolled over and given Fisher what he wanted while he gave NOTHING in return. It was BEYOND evident that MLB didn't like Oakland and Wolff and Fisher wanted NOTHING to do with Oakland, until they were FORCED to, and that's when they really decided to give this fanbase the shaft. So, go continue to 🍆 ride Fisher somewhere else.

Fisher has asked for public funding since day one, and that was a nonstarter. Oakland and Alameda County is still on the hook for paying the remaining bond for the Oakland Coliseum, thanks to Al Davis. I live outside of Oakland and grew up in Boston, and I can vouch for the fact that A's fans are loyal! They are an incredible fanbase, and this Fisher/MLB fiasco has made me an A's fan. That's a big statement given how I was in Boston for when the curse was broken in '04. Fisher is disgusting, as is Manfred. I'm now an Oakland A's fan and hope that this thing fails.
