You make an excellent point. Had you proposed sailing up the West coast into Alaska on a Catalina 30 to me, I would have chuckled right before realizing that you were being serious. That's precisely why you are out there doing it and I'm still mired in a $XXk refit project for my aluminum high latitude boat, after which I will also do it one day. Probably. Hopefully. You guys had the smarter approach & I applaud you for it. I'm quite enjoying your channel. Great stuff. Well done.

Hi folks . Me again. I have made the trip to Ketchikan twice on my boat. On the second trip (left Salish Sea June 20 2023) I had a manual downrigger mounted on the stern pulpit. Dropped to 125 ft in the entance of Pruth and caught two small Chinook in 20 mins. Also fished the same way outside of Foggy Bay and caught two more back to back. One Chinook and one pink.

In you last video you asked about ketches. I'm the guy with the Nauticat 44 ketch. I talked about the Nauticat boats, but didn't actually address ketches. Here's my thoughts on ketches vs sloops. Sloops are superior to ketches. Period. Full stop. Of course there are tradeoffs between sloops and ketches, but I believe that if you objectively look at them, if you're honest, you'll conclude that a sloop is a superior rig. My reasons are... Cost I had my standing and running rigging replaced on my ketch and it cost me twice what it would have cost had I had a sloop. It's already expensive to have your rigging replaced, now double that. That's the kind of money you're looking at with a ketch. Also, when you first buy the boat, you're paying for a 2nd mast and all that rigging and a sail. Rather than buying a mizzen mast, I would much rather have upgraded sloop rigging, including a top of the line in boom furler. That's where I'd rather put my money. Performance In engineering, it's common for one large "thing" to be more efficient than a bunch of smaller things. A single large sail is more efficient than two smaller sails, and the mizzen mast adds windage. This means that your upwind performance will be poorer with a ketch than with a sloop. However, for a beam reach and running, the ketch does well. Another sail to manage While we love to sail, handling sails is a pain in the butt. Wouldn't it be nice to have just one junk sail to manage? The ketches adds a second main sail you have to worry about, to trim, and to reef. If you're someone who makes sure your main has the proper twist to take advantage of the higher wind speeds at the top of the mast, well you now have two mains to properly trim. This point becomes a bit mute if you decide that you want a second head sail, a drifter, and maybe even a code zero, but still, the less sails you have to manage, the less of a headache it is when the winds shift. OK, now for some pros Another sail to manage The flip side of having that second main is that it gives you more sailing flexibility. One of the most pleasant ways to sail is to pull your main down and sail with just a small jib and the mizzen main. This is referred to as sailing the "jib and jigger". When night falls, this is the sail configuration I'll switch to. With my full keel, I can usually balance the boat well enough to turn the autopilot off in moderate winds. I don't go very fast, but it's very pleasant and that far aft mizzen sail gives the boat a lot of weather helm should the wind pick up. You paid a lot of money for that mizzen sail, this is the greatest benefit of having it. Using the mizzen as a rudder or riding sail I've never done this myself, but I understand that, should your rudder break, the mizzen main can do a decent job substituting for a rudder. Rather than steering you through the water, it steers you through the air. Also, the mizzen sail usually isn't as useful for performance sailing, so letting it get beat up as a riding sail at anchor is supposed to be a common thing to do. Two smaller sails rather than one large sail A very common pro given to ketches is that it's easier for a single handed sailor or an older couple to handle two smaller sails found on a ketch than one large sail found on a sloop. But with good equipment (electric winches and in mast or a in boom furler), this benefit is fairly minor these days. Especially if you consider that a single large sail is more efficient than two smaller ones. Still, it's so commonly listed as a pro for a ketch, I feel I'd be remiss should I not mention it. ketches look cool I guess I'm one of the people who think that the more sails that a boat has up, the better the boat looks. I don't think there's anything wrong with admiring the appearance of your boat, and a schooner or ketch looks much cooler than a sloop. I bought a ketch with the hope that it would be a better rig to sail around the world with, but I really didn't know much about them at the time. In hindsight, I would rather have a sloop (or cutter). However, I now have a ketch and I have to embrace its benefits. But I'm not so blinded by my choice that I'm unwilling to point out the downsides of a ketch. And I wouldn't say someone is dumb should they choose a ketch over a sloop. There are some benefits, particularly if cost is no issue and you just like how ketches look. Fair winds and following seas. Jason

Hey Hayden! Nice work on the Cat 30, stoked you’ll be cruising up here in the near future! We left the Broughtons late May, although we were hoping to leave earlier. Took us about two weeks to get to Ketchikan, could do it in less. But filming and editing along the way slows us down! It rained/was miserable for most of the way but once we arrived in SE Alaska (mid June) most days were nice! Unfortunately July was a bit of a crap chute up there for weather, we ran the diesel stove until August. We made it to Glacier Bay around July 21st, then started making our way south round the outside of Baranoff Island. We ran into fog often in August as to be expected but August and September was absolutely beautiful! We’re thinking of doing up a actual itinerary for folks with a list of anchorages. Let us know if you’re interested in that. Hope that helps for now, cheers!
