A Salute to American Veterans:"Death Drop and the 82nd Airborne in the D-Day Battle of Normandy."

The United Bank Center for Military and Veteran Services at Coastal Carolina University pay tribute to the 82nd Airborne in the D-Day battle of Normandy. Their deployment in advance of the battle became the advantage the Allied Forces needed in securing the beaches at Normandy.

The 17 Coastal Carolina athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA as members of the Sun Belt Conference. Carl Gustave Kleinsteuber, 82nd AB 505th PIR HQ Battalion near St Mere Eglise, KIA June 6, 1944. Previously, he fought in North Africa & Sicily. He was born in Savannah, GA & his father was a German immigrant. Carl was my uncle.

WOW ! Yooooooohhhh my man ! My grandpa , a medic , with rank of Capt. Was a veteran of WW2 , and fought with the USAs elite 508 PIR 82nd A/B Division . He jumped on 6/6/44 (DDAY ) . He said as streaming down on French soil , he saw from a bit of a distance an C47 /troop carrier with a stick of Paratroopers go plunging to the earth in a ball of flames , and as he landed right near STE. Mere Eglise he could hear the mayhem Slaughter of Nazis , and American Paratroopers going @ it point blank where many an American , and Nazi- German troops had died . Grandpa thought he crapped his pants , but he ✓ed , and he didn't , but did slightly piss himself . Later , he took part in the hellish , bloody hedgerow struggle with formidable , well entrenched Nazi- German troops , especially against some Waffen SS , ad some Nazi- German Paratroop units, as well as tough regular Nazi- German army units in Normandy , and throughout the fighting in the ETO !!

Know what ? You brought it out in me about my um , either my uncle on my pops side , or my mom's uncle on the Nazi- German side ,vAnd not excluding her father , or my German grandpa on mom's side .! Well ,u uncle , on pops mom's side was kia in SouthVietnams Central Highlands , up near Pleiku , mid- March , 1968 , tail end of bloody TET , about 2 wks. B-4 my 11th bday . My mom's uncle on her pops side , was a Colonel in the Luftwaffe , and was kia in his FW190(Focke Wolf 190 ) fighter plane shot down in the Anzio , Italy area early March , 1944 Well , had to get that out , which is true , and no , I haven't watched too many war movies like some people imply I do . But , going through the bloodletting of family members kia in wars , why would I be kidding about their demise , but Revere them a brave men . And , not because they were kia , but that they put their lives , for real , on the line of sacrificing themselves for no matter what cause . I mean I'm not going to be partial , nor discriminate those who fought for a cause they deemed right , and sacrificed their precious lives for a noble cause , or a cause that was in vain

my dad parachuted in Sicily 1943 and Holland " Operation Market '' 82nd Airborne . he was in a hanger in England for the D-Day jump but his plane never got off the ground .

One thing that got lost in this excellent presentation. Graigne France was as the video said, wiped out by the SS in revenge for the townspeople having aided US troops in the battle. After the war, Graingne and its citizens who’d been massacred, was given the designation Por La France….a designation of the highest heroism given by Parliament in recognition of supreme sacrifice for France. God bless those US troops, and all the massacred of the town.

One of my uncles, Kellam Turner came ashore on D-day and was killed near Carentan a couple of weeks later. I want to say the program was very informative and showed the battles and locations very clearly. A good job.

The narrators should stand out of the way and not block the scenes they are viewing. Their voice narration and not their presence in the pictures would be more professional and less distracting from the presentation they are trying to present. They make the documentary more about them than what they are trying to show.

My Maternal uncle, T/Sgt William J. Torpie was in the 82nd, 508 Airborne. He landed in Normandy in the wee hours of June 6. There is a famous photo of him with several Paratroopers, one holding a captured Nazi flag. I have learned recently that that flag was the first captured Nazi flag. Uncle Buddy was killed by the Nazis later that day. His body lay where he had fallen and remained there for a week. After the routing of the Nazis his body was quickly buried where he fell. On July 1, 1944, it was disintered and taken to an Allied burial ground nearby in a temporary grave. After the war my grandparents, Nora Jordan Torpie and my grandfather William J. Torpie Sr. and my mother Sarah V. Torpie asked that his corpse be re-patriated to Boston Massachusetts. It arrived in Boston on a ship with many other bodies. He was buried in Brookline, Massachusetts. All information that I write came from US Army documents.

My grandpa was a medic with rank of Capt. in the 508 82nd A/B Div. He told me he had the option to carry a weapon being a paratrooper ; he carried a 30. Cal Carbine , which he said he used during g the subsequent hedgerow bloody fighting .

I have an old newspaper copy of that photo. My grandmother circled one of the guys in the back and labeled it as my dad. It wasn't. Dad was a paratooper in Normandy - but he's not in that photo

Thank you for this detailed documentary. My grandfather, John Sarachman, was a paratrooper and lost most of all of his friends who joined together from near Pittsburgh. My dad said he is a hero, shot twice, yet still blew up a pillbox with a bag of explosives. My brother had his medals.

Well Done! The 82nd's objectives were extremely difficult as part of Operation Boston. 600+ were lost, missing, KIA, captured, wounded over the battles from June 6-10, 1944. We all honor the bravery, courage and determination to help Operation Overlord succeed by first getting "the boys" off of Utah Beach. My grandfather was proud to have served with this division. All Airborne deserved the credit for their actions in helping Overlord succeed - the British 6th, the 82nd All American and the 101st Screaming Eagles. Please don't overlook any of these divisions or favor one over the other. They all served the Allied Invasion well and helped free Europe from the terrible Scourge of WWII.

My Grandpa was in the 508 PIR 82nd A/B Division in WW2 . Normandy 6/6/44 , Nimjwegen , Ardennes where he's wounded ,and the liberation of a sub- let concentration camp He had a difficult time describing those dreadful times . A classic case of PSTD !

@@JohnEglick-oz6cdWöbbelin was the subcamp. There is a good Documentary here on You Tube of the burial and Memorial Service before they took off for Berlin. Your grandfather's Regiment had a tough time in D-Day being dropped so off course. So many had PTSD and just buried it for no one to hear. I was lucky my grandfather let me ask questions and read his diary and letters. If your grandfather has passed, I know you know he rests in honor and did his duty to a grateful nation.

Either hewasn't that far from the town , or heard from rumours Not to denigrate his service by no stretch of the imagination ! My grandpa had a very difficult time describing the blood letting in the hedgerow fighting . He was a medic , and carried a 30. Cal. Carbine , which he had to use , especially against counter attacking Germans / possible Waffen SS , which his unit didn't take any alive ! My grandpa , had a tiff with an PTO Marine about that the ETO wasn't as bad . My grandpa said he almost kiaed the Marine , that's how pissed off he got to Evan think that ! Grandpa said that a few men he trained @ jump school lay buried in France , Holland , and the Ardennes where he suffered a leg injury from the jeep he was in hit a land mine . Also , lost my uncle in NAMs Central Highlands mid 3/68 , tail end of bloody TET near my 11 the bday . Crazy !

My father, who passed in 1992... served on the USS Braxton (APA-138) in the Pacific. His ship was a troop transport and supply ship. Many of those men his ship carried, never made it home and the freedom we have today is bc of that generation of men who met the challenge. Once the beaches were secured the other units Landed... free french under Degaulle had the honour of Liberating paris which they Lost in 1940 ...no americans Then to help being neutral!

Not entirely true. Yes, Frances troops were the first in the official victory parade, symbolizing French liberation of France. But to achieve this liberation, French troops, US troops and many French Resistance fighters fought very hard in and around Paris itself….which Hitler ordered burned to the ground when it was clear the Nazis would lose Paris, and thus, France. Though many explosives were set, the Nazi General in command of German troops in Paris REFUSED before history to destroy one of the most ancient cities in Europe.

The release of the Parachute harness was too convoluted and difficult , tied down with the men taking too much with them, on themselves . No wonder they couldn't get out of the water. The British harness was easier. The reports of the Pilots going into too fast is due to the P'troopers having no idea how a plane works and misinterpreting the actions of the pilots. Then the stories are dubiously repeated with out checking primary sources or the facts verified .Lazy producers to this video.
