A segmented box: building "on-the-lathe"

Sharing what I've learned while trying to build "pixel-perfect" closed-segmented pieces. With a traditional brick-lay pattern, you can afford a little slop in the alignment, which makes the technique I'm using here a bit of over-kill. But to get these "pixels" to line up, this is the only way I could get it done!

This is done exactly as Earl from Earl’s small segment shop teaches. He even designed the the table assembly you use to glue on your segments. I’ve watched his videos, learned, and made some amazing pieces. Glad he has helped you turn out some nice segmented pieces too

That's similar to the way that I do it Scott. Sometime I'll skip on or two segments and then go back and fill it in. I'm like you, if the pieces don't line up exactly with proper overlap, I've failed!

Scott, I really liked your video. I also use a table for open segmented turning similar to yours but have never done a closed segmented bowl. Now I have to try it.

When you put the pieces on the outer ring do you go back and put a face clamp or something that puts more pressure on the segments to make sure you get a good bond on the ring? I like quick and thick and have not done any like this and was wondering. Looks awesome man.

How do you make sure that a segment lines up correctly, when meeting an opposing segment of a different color from the previous ring?

It’s adjustable, there’s a thumbscrew under the table.

Any concerns about wood movement or joint failure without the bricklay to anchor the segments ring to ring?

A little. These woods are quite oily and dense and thoroughly dried, so if treated with care, I expect this to be an heirloom. We shall see!
