Weathering With You was Makoto Shinkai's 6th feature length film, and what a joy it was. Looking at the theme of a selfish love.

I feel an underlying tone that gets ignored is how if you only live to help others and forget yourself eventually you'll be unable to help anyone and end up hurting those closest to you. Ironic that the first step to being able to fully be able to help others is to selfishly help yourself first and foremost.

@@1607Adi_Manz I mean it was never said that people died, what if they evacuated? Hina was already sacrificing for others and in the end even sacrificed her life for Tokyo so give the poor girl a break will ya. Be honest if u was in hadako's place u would have chosen ur loved ones (friends, family, lover, kids,u name it) over a damn city.

My problem with the people who hated the ending of Weathering with You for the mc's choice is I'm honestly baffled people would take that stance, and I think morally it's disgusting. Good to know that people will gladly sacrifice a 15-year-old girl who's digging her own grave all for the sake of their own comfort. As far as we know in the film there isn't anything that suggests someone else died from the weather change and even then that's not something a lone individual, a child at that, should have to carry the weight of such a burden over as she herself did in selflessly doing. A theme of the movie I got from it was also as a result that you need to take care of yourself or rather hell be a little selfish yourself too so that you can still even be there for the people that love and or need you as being so selfless to the point it comes at your own expense isn't a good thing.

Hina means "sun" in Japanese. It's so fitting. I remember a quote from the game Dragon Age: Origins that highlights the selfish side of love. You devote your time, energy and attention to a single person, putting their needs ahead of others and ultimately yourself. Selfish and selfless all in one. It's strange, but true. I'm so selfless because of my love for one girl that I have trouble asking for help, from anyone including my own parents, who I should look to for guidance sometimes. It may also be out of a selfish desire to turn my life around "my way" and have my love carry through for others to have, like Hodaka. Also, Sage's Rain, you live up to your name with this one, an analysis of a film centered around weather. Find solace in the rain, my friends.

When it comes down to it, when the floods come and cities die, what are we really saddened about? It's the people that matter more than any damage dealt in the ever changing landscape of the world we desperately try to control. The moments in the sun with those we love and those we love. The blue sky though it affords these moments are just peripheral if you take out the human life, the clearest skies and the best built cities are still joyless. That's what I think the film speaks of with 'selfish' love.

People never get my point why I love that line. I interpreted it as loving someone with their flaws and accepting for what or who they are in the past, if they still falls short or make mistakes because relationships are meant to be worked by two individuals that care and love each other. The separation in Weathering With You to me represents my own separation from an ex lover - my own youthful and selfish love which from the start was acted on too early. It was not falling in love that happened too early, but allowing myself to act on that love. Just like when Hodaka says "I want you more than any blue sky", but as we see in the end he returns to his school on the island and waits however many years to graduate. We have to grow into the world and be fully ready to be able to act on that love. But do I regret falling in love in the first place? No. I think that's what this movie captures - sometimes being selfish and living in the moment, learning about the consequences of your actions. As in 5cm per second, sometimes people are only meant to be with each other for a certain amount of time. But also, separating and being willing to earn the right to that love, taking a chance to risk the storm.

I still can’t exactly get over the flooding of tokyo. I get all the beautiful symbolism, but surely millions of people died and many more were displaced to live harsh lives. They all have loving connections and feelings just like the protagonists do so it just doesn’t feel right to me.

I don’t beleive anyone would have directly died from the flooding. Displaced and living hurt lives yes. But we can’t make that sound like that was the main protagonists fault. How would we feel, if we could stop the endless rain, or real life climate change, by sacrificing one person. Would any of us be ok with that, ok with sacrificing a young girl, to make our own happiness continue. The movie even puts forth this question. We often make heroism about complete self sacrifice. And I’m not here to say that their are moments when that isnt ok, needed and even beautiful. But heroes are people too. They have a wanting to live, and live with love. Just like the rest of us. I think the movie is trying to point out the idea that love, and the heroic acts associated with it, are a continuous act of caring for others well beings. And with that, how could we not care about a girl having to sacrifice her life for a blue sky. How could that be the solution that we accept. How could we let a cruel fate, for her and all those that love her, become just a “necessary sacrifice”. Sometimes doing a good thing, the right thing, doesn’t always lead to the most happiest results. And in this movies case, I think they make a point to say that they can all find different/better was to live. Or even a different solution for stopping the rain. Because heroes understand that no one is truly happy until everyone is. No one is truly free, until we all are. And until then, we all carry the each other’s burdens, together.
