I think you have a problem when games collecting is affecting your abilities to pay bills, rent, mortgage, or important things. If you got the space and can afford it and it's not affecting your personal life like your relationship or taking care of your loved ones it's perfectly alright. Being able to control your collection like selling doubles or getting rid of stuff you realize you no longer need is a sign of you having control of your collecting habit.

For me its more of a paranoia, about the game going into $200+, Or unable to find it to buy it. So i end up researching, and keeping eye on market, if any video games are becoming rare to find, or price is creeping up.

I had just over 10,000 books in my "library." My library took up my entire 2-bedroom apartment. I had to move states and realized that having stuff to this degree was just not worth it. I converted to digital book and got rid of my game collections as well. I don't think I ever want to own that much stuff again, even though the urge is still there.

I kept all of my science/engineering texts as reference along with the ghost/alien/cryptid books since I was moving to Oregon. The rest I sold off in collections keeping only a very small selection of autographed/signed first editions. All totaled, I kept about 200 individual books which was still quite a few boxes when I moved. I sold all the games to some people I felt would appreciate them to the same degree I did. It took about 6 months to resolve everything.

I've got issues where I sometimes get so hyper focused on acquiring or playing something that I will have trouble thinking about anything else until I get it or another game takes it's place. There are thankfully various ways to try a game before you buy it. It's kind of sad how 15-30 minutes with a game can sometimes be enough to mentally move on. As I get older I find a smaller curated selection is best for me or else the collection itself can be overwhelming picking something to play.

My biggest hoarding confession is CRT’s - I’ve got this fear that suddenly they will get hard to find (and eventually they will) and / or go up to silly prices. So every time I see a good deal on a CRT on eBay or out in the wild I buy it - I’ve got about 13 CRT’s hanging around the house and I only use 2 to game on, the others are “spare” 😂 realistically I’ve probably got enough right now to last my lifetime without them all waring out, but I’ll keep doing it. I’ve got several large game collections and a beautiful game room which I’ve built up over the years, but I just see that as my hobby to be honest and it doesn’t concern me at all.

I've gotten in and out of collecting phases. Right now I've only been collecting modern stuff at the moment and I plan on selling off some stuff soon. The biggest collection I ever had was a bit over 200 n64 games. Now I have 2. This is certainly a very interesting subject.

I went all-digital as soon as I could. After collecting games since I started getting Intellivision cartridges in the early 80s, and continuing to the C-64, TurboGrafx, Amiga, Lynx, Genesis, Jaguar, MS-DOS, Dreamcast, GBA, Xbox, GameCube, DS, and 360, enough was enough! Housing is expensive, and there was no way I was going to keep paying for more and more space just to house more and more carts and discs.

I started collecting because over the years I have bought and then resold games from my childhood over and over, just to feel dumb and end up buying them again and going through all of the trouble of hunting everything down. I swore one day that everything I bought game wise that I really liked I would never let go of again. The rising cost of these games also encouraged me to hold on to them because I didn't want to pay more later when I know I would inevitably buy them again at a higher price.

I started my KZbin channel because I wanted to share my collection and memories with others. I love telling the stories about my collection and engaging with others about collecting, it's therapeudic. I think hording happens when you can't let go of the junk titles or shelf fillers that mean nothing to you. If you can figure that part out it's a great hobby!

Totally agree! There's definitely a big difference between hoarding and just collecting things you love. If it's sitting on the shelf collecting dust never to be used, then yeah that could be a problem. My rule of thumb is, only buy games I will actually play. I apply this rule to other things I collect as well. Only buy manga I plan on reading multiple times, only buy movies/anime/cartoons/tv shows that I intend on watching more than once. Using this method has really helped me slow down on buying and just focus on getting stuff I know I'll enjoy for years to come.

I get into a collection phase a few times over the years, but I always have a goal in mind (and a budget) for exactly what I want. (Right now it's Famicom Disk System games.) I don't go too crazy as far as getting stuff outside of the bounds, but occasionally I'll see that *one* item I must get and will cut to the chase and purchase it on eBay. Then I'll stop for about 1-2 years and enjoy whatever I have. Thankfully things like flashcarts and FPGA devices have really curbed my desire to go crazy on collecting. I think the problem for some people sets in when they feel that they really do have to collect any and everything they see and never let go of the stuff. They then reach a point where it affects their daily life and creates issue after issue for themselves as well as their friends and loved ones. If you have very specific goals in mind and not go too far it becomes a very enjoyable experience. You'll even pick up tips and tricks to get those said items without using any money at all.

Purpose....I think that is what separates hoarding vs collecting. Do you buy just to buy? Do you buy to collect your favorite games, collection of games. Do you collect for money? Is it organized and do you know what you have. Over the years I have only double purchased physical copies twice. In both cases they were b1g1 free. Hoarding is having stuff just to have it, with no purpose other than it makes you feel better. Ahhhh organized, you just said it in the video!!! Is their a passion behind it. By 2006 I had built up a collection of 18 systems and 6000+ games and then I sold off almost the whole collection. I kind of have regrets, particularly regarding my huge Amiga collection. But bottom line was that I had cupboards overflowing with stuff that I honestly never played. These days I continue to collect for just a few systems that I really enjoy (Commodore 64, Vectrex, original Xbox, Dreamcast and Wii) everything else is now emulation via Raspberry Pie and a modded Xbox.

Collecting video games can be very expensive and take up a lot of space. A friend wanted to start buying a lot of Super Nintendo games because those were his favorite games as a kid. Not to collect them but to play them. I told him there was a way to get to play all the SNES games he wanted and not to have to pay a cent to get them and not have to store them. Download a SNES emulator and download ROMs of the games. He did it and said I saved him thousands of dollars. Plus I said no matter how many SNES carts of Chrono Trigger and Super Mario World he buys it is nothing new but exactly the same old game he remembers. I told him there are ROM hacks of these classics that hackers change the games and you can play new different versions of the games. There are fan retranslations of Chrono Trigger closer to the Japanese Super Famicom version and new versions where you can save Schala and one with a completely new area added. A completely playable 1999. I told him there are ROM hacks, at least a dozen of them, that are completely new versions of Super Mario World. The best reason not to get into buying a lot of original carts is you can play the games for free on ROM hacks on your computer with an emulator. I have told a lot of my friends the advantages of ROM hacks and they sold all their video games to get the cash and free up the space. All the Super Nintendo games you ever wanted on one little thumb drive AND completely new versions of old favorites. .

Best advice I have is to not judge how someone else collects. If it works for them and they are happy then live and let live. There's only a small portion of my collection that I'm attached to and that's some of my games from my childhood. Unfortunately, I did sell off a bunch in my college years like Earthbound CIB that I sort of regret a bit but given the time of my life and how tight money and space were, I'd probably do it again.

The weirdest thing I’ve come across in the gaming scene is Retro Game Stores hoarding. I love Mom & Pop stores to death, but I’ve worked at several in the last decade that have back rooms, basements, or storage lockers filled to the brim with gaming stuff for seemingly no reason. When you ask the owners what’s up with that they always give you some vague answer about waiting until the value is right or they just don’t have time to go through it. Why buy it if you don’t plan on selling it? Oh and don’t even think about suggesting bulk selling to new collectors or other game stores, that will set a lot of owners off.

I've been thinking about curating my collection recently, I have so many random games that I'll never play... I'm thinking of collecting for a certain reason in the future, like certain videos I want to make, or only collecting for a certain system

As a collector with hoarding tendencies(I was a locker hoarder in middle/high school) I sometimes must consider which I am doing at a given point in time. By recognizing my hoarding triggers I am usually good about it but it can be difficult at times.

I dont consider myself a collector but I do have a lot of games and consoles going back to the NES years. When I had the Atari 2600 with over a hundred games, I sold it all and regretted it. I had the Turbo Grafix 16 with about 20 games, I sold it and regretted it as well. After that, I never sold any of my games or consoles. But I have to say that after the XBOX 360, the gaming fun sorta stopped. The new consoles just don't have that magic the older consoles did. I do still purchase games but its gotten to the point where I just buy them, get home and don't even open them to play. I currently have about 8 games sealed. I also bought the NES classic, SNES mini and Genesis mini. I opened them, played them once and back in the box they went. I guess I am a collector after all and purchase games just to have. Honestly nowadays I can't see myself spending $60 for a game and I usually wait until the games drop to $15-20. I've thought of selling to pay bills but can't commit since a lot of these have a great memory of my childhood attached to them. I remember exactly where I was when I got Mike Tyson's Punch Out. The first time I hooked up the NES to my tv and played for hours. Or the great SEGA vs Nintendo war. Video games were such a great time of my childhood that I was even offered a teaching position in college to teach video game history after talking about it with a teacher and admin every week as I took animation classes. It's just hard to part with great memories.

Very interesting video guys. I've only been collecting for like 2 years so I probably dont have too many tips to offer. But the first thing I did was prioritize what I actually wanted to collect that way I wasn't buying stuff solely on buzz or nostalgia. I picked Wii U, Gamecube, and N64 since I loved the n64, Wii U was my main console, and I wanted to experience Gamecube more since I mostly played PS2. In December I decide to primarily focus on Wii U almost exclusively. Its tempting to buy other stuff like GBA, PS2, or Xbox, but I've stayed focused on Wii U and I'm about at sub 30 games left. I have the urge to buy different stuff but I'm enjoying the focus of going Wii U. Getting close to that goal has helped not burn out and has kept me motivated. It's a small library so I just need one book shelf for it which helps with it not being so "hoardish"

In 2018 I went through a phase and sold roughly 60% of my games. I collect again but now I’m much more picky with what goes into my collection. If I score some game lots or something I sell what I don’t need.

We always say that it's not hoarding if everything has a place. lol I think there are many fine lines to be drawn between hoarding and collecting and it's something that is likely to be defined more personally from person to person. We don't keep things sealed, so for us it generally has no merit to have two of something with one being sealed and the other not. BUT, we do collect variants, which by definition a sealed item could be considered a variant, so it's going to vary by personal opinion. Just...make sure that stuff is on a shelf or something and not "collected" in a box in an attic. Sports games in a Rubbermaid tub under the bed doesn't count. LOL

I think preserving video games is kind of a cop out for most. I run the Console Purist Museum, and offer free admission for anyone that would like to visit video game history. I have over 13,500 games, 357 consoles and 44 complete console libraries.

Hey guys, I've been watching since the beginning of the NES Pursuit days and always enjoyed your stuff. Collecting games is near and dear to my heart just like you guys, I think everyone should put it in perspective what they truly want and don't want. Don't keep what you don't want or really don't need (like 12 NES systems) because it will just take up space, and you could use that money to buy stuff you really want. I mean if you see a great deal in the wild, of course get it but don't sit on stuff that you aren't going to enjoy. Do it because it makes you happy, not because you need to. One pro tip I will always recommend is always go after games for a console right as its being phased out, ends of generations you can get a ton of games for super cheap, although i will say it will be interesting how this generation will fare out considering there will be less physcial games than most previous generations (and whenever GameStop closes, at this point its not if but when). #mortmondays PS4 please and thank you 😊.

#Mortmondays What keeps me in a good headspace is the fact that I never have to hide my collecting from my family, because we have an understanding that the games and related items I buy generally hold their value, or increase in value, so if we're ever in a bad place financially, the things I collect can get us through if we're not able to otherwise figure things out. Our last full year in NYC, I was laid off and denied a proper severance package, but we were able to pay our rent because I sold off a game that had skyrocketed in value. While I no longer own that game, it's still special to me, because I still remember exactly where, when, and why I bought it, why I kept it sealed (not my typical MO), and how we got through the end of that year without me having an income. I guess this is a long rambling way of saying that remembering what's important always makes my collecting more fulfilling, because ultimately if it needs to go so I can provide for my family, it needs to go. There are things that are more important than having a massive collection of games. All that said! PS4 please, but I only need Shadow of War. If you choose me, please send Shadow of Mordor to someone else who wants it!

I would collect. Enjoy the games. If i decide to move on or need to downsize. I usually give up the system and a bunch of games to my nephews and niece. At least i know it will be continued to be enjoyed and a awesome gift to past down. Now i have my own kids, i want to collect games i will want to play with them when they get older.

I learned a long time ago that its better not to keep more then one of the same Systems around or even non backwards Compatible Systems Example my Wife & Daughter Bought me a Super Retron 3 a Couple years a go & i loved it so i immediately Sold My NES & Sega Model 1. Then i Sold my Game Cube & PS1 & stared using my Wii & Ps2 to play my Ps1 & Game Cube games on its just more beneficial on Space & your Wallet.

I collect psa graded pokemon cards and go through the same cycles of selling and building my collection haha. Fortunately I've made pretty decent profit from reselling so my current collection was nearly free.

I personally suggest to just collect the cards you personally enjoy and not base it on rarity, but the most expensive sets are the original base set, Skyridge, Neo Genesis, and the list goes on. Certain pokemon always have a premium as well, like charizard, Mewtwo, Rayquaza etc...for example will always be sought after cards. Do some research and see which sets and cards you like and go from there, it's a lot of fun and nostalgia!

Awesome video/chat about a topic that I believe a lot of collectors do tend to avoid with themselves. Me, personally, I don’t collect games but I feel the topic you discussed it relevant across all genres of collecting. I’m an action figure collector and a music collector but I also collect films I like, Ned Kelly (Aussie bushranger....yes I’m an Aussie) and stuff from comedian Billy Connolly. Action figure wise it’s: Predator, SW Black Series, Deadpool, MOTU, Hot Wheels (certain ones), Mad Max and Transformers. I’m NOT a completist by any stretch of the imagination and I can go for months without buying a single thing yet some months the funds get a good work out. For me collecting is all about that nostalgia hit BUT over the past 10 years I’ve really cooled my heels compared to my old “gotta have it now” habits. Here’s my tips for avoiding the hoarding: . Don’t impulse buy . Set a monthly budget and DON’T go over it . Is the item a want or a need? . Collect in the parameters you’ve set yourself. Expansion means more $$$ . Don’t buy just because it’s new and/or you didn’t know about it (the item). Step back. Think. (See first point) . You lived without the item before you can live without it now. They’re just my thoughts on it. I’m 47 years old and have been a collector since I was (about) 18. I’ve sold off collections, too, and to be quite honest I don’t miss what I had. I’ve always told folks (and myself) that when a hobby becomes an addiction then it’s time to re-evaluate what you’re doing.

#mortmondays ps4 is system. hey guys i will say that one of the biggest things that has helped me as a person who was a former drug addict and someone who still struggles with the addiction mentality of i need to have whatever it is right away or else i get upset and depressed. The thing that reallh has helped me honestly and i knlw this is going to sound cliche is watching nes pursuit and other ppl like you guys has helped create the feelings of being there and experiencing the "thrill " of the hunt without actually needing to hunt. Watching videos of yall and really hearing the behind the scenes emotional stories from you guys really touches my heart. I dont have many friends in my life but when i watch you guys it makes me feel connected and makes me feel as though im not the only one feeling these emotions. 7:30 I was at the same point where i mainly collected games for the sake and fun of collecting and not for the sake of actually playing all the games but that was the point when i stopped and changed because i really became aware that i am not even interested in playing like 60percent of the games i bought and so I really ask myself what is the point of having those games when i don't even want to play them. And so i became a lot more selective nowadays with the games i buy because it really can end up becoming a waste of a lot of space and a waste of a lot of money when you just buy things for the sake of collecting

A lot of time flys away when collecting, that's for me is the number 1 issue and the 2nd issue goes to spending a lot of money. I think the best thing is to make a list of the consoles and games you wish to own in your collection for nostalgia's reason and go for these instead of just buying everything gaming related. With a proper and final list you've goals to finish and it will be much more fun.

It's funny when collectors talk about their hobby they never say "play." I'd think there's a bunch of people who'd like to get old games but they're part of someone's collection and will remain untouched. I've got a small "collection" that is part of my backlog but I'm more of a curator as I plan to play all my games.

I think its only hoarding if its becomes messy and takes up room to move. Some people spend a lot of their money on drink. Some like to spend money on games. If it makes you happy and doesn't impact you/family financially then keep collecting.

Interesting conversation. I wouldn't say I collect video games. Probably got 120 games and thats with 4 consoles but I do collect CDs (around 3000 at the moment) and I've got loads I will never listen to again but majority aren't worth anything now. So the reason I give myself is "well it cost me £12 so not going to sell for 20p". Even though I really need the space. I do wonder often if my collection would be half that size if could at least get a quarter of what I paid back. That doesn't give a good reason as to why I keep buying CDs except for the fact that I love collecting and listening to them. But I do think the value on what it's worth today makes a massive difference Realistically though I wouldn't sell them even if I could get what I paid for them as just love owning them But i guess I like to give myself a reason as to why I have so many

#MortMondays One thing as a collector that has kept me happy through collecting is the adventure to find good deals on eBay. I think it is so much fun looking at auctions and waiting tell the bid is almost over and then everyone has a bidding war. Collecting certain games and popular games from older systems is a lot of fun, I'm always happy when I see a collection of games from different consoles. Making a budget has helped me to not over spend on games and going and playing the games helps me get out of the habit of going on eBay and looking for something to buy. I would love if I could have the 2 games your giving away for the Xbox One pls, Thank You very much. Also, I am very happy to be with such an awesome community of collectors, watching collecting videos has inspired me to collect. Thank you for fun and enjoying videos to watch.

Lots of valid points in this video. I wish I had saved all my old systems growing up however now i collect what i think I will enjoy playing or never had to money to play when I was younger. In the past two years I picked up a wii/gamecube backwards compatable. A PSP and just today bought a 2ds xl. I also recently picked up a retro raspberry because let's face it to collect all those games would cost thousands of dollars. Dont get me wrong I love my physical copys of games with the original artwork and cases but I have to be realistic I'm not rich. Love your guys vids!!!

I miss the hunt and getting a nice tan while looking for video games and the laughter. (What helps me with video games is that keeping it organized and once you do that. You’ll do that with everything else. Tools for your car to your kitchen. Xbox 👍

I get games at a slow rate. Not Just because of Money and space, but most of all because I want to play every game I get. I want to spend the time in the games I buy. I mostly buy what I realistically want to play. My idea Is to have a library where every bit of space brings me many Memories Edit: This way every time I buy a game It feels special. And yeah I don't think I'll sell anything. And for my more recent systems I want to organize the games in the order I got them :D

I think what gets me is when you collect or hoarding games. Then you have to sell them on problem you have not to say everyone goes thru it. Then what does that make you a non collector now?
