Electric Unicycles sure look like a hell of a lot of fun. Fair headlights, but I'd like more light at the speeds you are going. They have enough range to get me to work, but getting home again .... But on the roads around here, even with careful, defensive driving, I'm worried about my life expectancy. If only everyone on the road had light EVs - unicycles, bikes, scooters, very small enclosed cars, etc - then this sure could work. But when you have aggressive idiots in monstrously big 4WDs and trucks on the road, ...

@langhamp89128 ай бұрын
Owning an electric unicycle or eScooter does change your perspective as to what reasonable transportation is. Cars and trucks aren't reasonable; because 90% of their weight is carrying themselves and the rest is you, you quickly come to the realization that they're actually armored mech suits. A reasonable form of transportation is designed to get you from one place to another but cars and trucks are first designed to crash; their transportation utility is secondary.

The cop didn't need to stop you if he wasn't going to write a ticket. Tyrant. Then the car looks like road rage.
@dennisbruce749610 ай бұрын
"It's an electric bike!". Good response to avoid a ticket. Stay to the side of the road when cars come up behind you along with the whole group to avoid problems. Riding through high-traffic areas taking up a whole lane is illegal. E-bikes and all PEV's are designated to the side of the road. Marty riding in the California hills on empty roads that are closed is awesome. Be safe. Riders have been killed riding in the middle of the road after falling and being run over. Check your mirror often and just like cycle groups, allow cars room to get around you. I saw riders crisscrossing the street during the ride. Cars passing the group may hit these people playing around. Great video, not good examples of proper riding like Marty's videos where the group stays together and yields to cars passing. I value my life and other riders' lives also.
@BobJohnson-xg9ng9 ай бұрын
Bike rider here. Racing bike. General rule is to ride about 2 feet from edge. Cars are subconsciously aware of you and will go around. If you ride in the center of the lane, they will be totally and understandably pissed. Legally you are a car bound to same rules if you break them drivers will be pissed. From your post, "Check your mirror often and just like cycle groups, allow cars room to get around you." Well said.

The crash at around 6 minutes in happened purely because you were going too fast. I couls see in earlier footage that, unless you had absolutely fantastical amount of torque, that was way to fast for a unicycle to be stable. Given the physical size of the machine there cannot be sufficient battery capacity to power a motor of high enough power for more than a couple of miles or so. A small bump in the surface will require the wheel to accelerate hard momentarily to correct a forward leaning force. If the rider leaves insufficient surplus power to provide this sharp acceleration the unicycle will fall forwards. A general rule of unicycle riding is to never ride at over about half power, otherwise you are asking for a faceful of road surface. It could clearly be seen that these guys were going well in excess of that.
@FloWithZo3 ай бұрын
That’s clearly not what happened. Watch again. The rider behind was being careless and took a foot off while seated. As a result they were extremely slow to brake. And crashed into what was in front of them.
@Kimdino13 ай бұрын
@@FloWithZo In any event, is that not the very definition of going too fast? Leaving inadequate time to respond? But the feet aren't used for braking these machines. All manouevring is done by upper body weight shifts. In braking your upper body weight is used to balance the motor torque which slows you down. If the motor is being run near it limits then it will have very little room to respond. Result = 'gravel rash' if you are lucky.

I love the concept of electric unicycles. A beautiful answer to todays personal transport problems. They have massive potential. But they have a problem in that the vast majority of early adopters seem to be arseholes, who go for speed while failing to properly understand the dynamics of these machines. And these idiots scare sane people away from adopting them, believing they are dangerous due to seeing lots of the crashes resulting from the EUCs being overdriven.

@grb196910 ай бұрын
{tl;dr. Why EUCs aren’t as stupid as they look 👀} Statistically, Electric Unicycles are about 10x safer than cars or motorcycles. This results from an inability to ride consistently at maneuvering speeds that are much beyond your personal skill level. It’s more difficult and more noticeably vulnerable to ride outside one’s safety envelope due to the physics of control having only one contact point. The (unnecessary) additional wheel(s) on 2-4 wheeled vehicles provides an artificial sense of stability along with decreased mobility or degrees of motion. It’s simply easier to take more risks while being somewhat unaware of an encroaching dynamic instability, such as loss of traction or overshooting a curve due to excessive centrifugal forces. This type of accident happens less on EUCs because skill tends to self-limit the actual risks to the EUC rider because those risks are more in alignment with their known limit capabilities. Just like a nice BMW with traction control can mask a driver’s inexperience, a motorcycle can feel secure at high speed yet have extremely reduced safety margins when emergency maneuvers are required. As a former professional truck driver, an amateur motorcycle rider and an avid Electric Unicycle fanatic, I’d say that the least risky vehicle I’ve ever driven is absolutely the EUC. And, I know that this is impossible to believe unless you’re another EUC rider. That said, EUC riders can cheat themselves out of the joys of a slowly progressing learning curve, and deprive themselves of the deep learning opportunities found while riding wheels that are underpowered for one’s skill or weight. So, similar to motorcycles, people do choose models that are far beyond their skillset, and they miss out on safety as a result. I’ll recommend watching the ‘Chooch Tech’ channel to see how nimble these machines can be with a highly skilled rider. Also, ‘WattsSingleTrack’… I’ll add links below.

@@grb1969 " _statistically, Electric Unicycles are about 10x safer than cars or motorcycles_ " you didn't give any statistics though, AFAICS. Cars are, statistically, more than ten times safer than motorcycles, so the claim doesn't make much sense to begin with, I mean, which one is it. More importantly, your personal opinion from your personal experience is, for many reasons, a _very_ weak indicator of the true safety.
