Lots of good advice. Always good to remind people to ride to the environment. In many crashes I've seen, speed differential is a big factor. Many riders become jaded about riding at high speed in close proximity to fixed obstacles like sign posts, benches, parked cars. They don't adjust their speed to local traffic: walking speeds amongst pedestrians, bicycle speeds amongst cyclists, automobile speeds amongst autos. They don't reduce speed as visibility decreases (around corners / over rises or due to obstacles that obstruct vision).

53 year old housewife, had first crash May 1st, 4 months after getting wheel. Riding low speed less than 10mph on v5f, mind wasn't on the ride, I was lost ( embarrassingly close to home in USA suburbs early Sunday morning, no witnesses) was in the middle of the road and stubbornly didn't want to stop to navigate on my phone, I was frustrated and impatient probably tried to speed up fast briefly to get through unfamiliar territory and down I went. This was before I even had an app on my phone communicating with the wheel to tell me stuff. Was wearing all my gear so no breaks nor scrapes but somehow wrecked my left shoulder, still not back to 100% after almost 5 weeks, but I haven't stopped riding EUC, trying to be more mindful and at least know what route I'm taking from now on. Also, my body wasn't used to going long distances and I was at the 2 mile point... Recently added a pair of 6 inch diameter glow in the dark googlie eyes to my wheel on either side of where the headlight is and a tuft of yellow "hair" on the top - the kids seem to like it when they see it, gives a friendlier vibe. Since the crash ( no wheel damage but a scrape or two) my endurance has worked up to riding 6 miles with only two minimal stops one to sit briefly and one to just walk the wheel a little. I'm learning to adjust weight from one foot to another while riding to get foot fatigue relief.

I had a similiar low speed wreck. My hands and chest took most of the impact but I slightly rolled onto my sholder. I had on my gear so only the shoulder was sore. So sore I got xrays. Nothing broken. I'm guessing I pulled a ligament or badly damaged the muscle. Im nearly able to use the full range motion with no pain..........That wreck was six months ago........Ice it regularly. Message it regularly. Do some band excercises. It'll get better. Keep riding. Hahaha. I did as well.

When you are saying "goes down for no reason " I'm a bit confused. Seems like the reason for most of them was user error and demanding too much from the machine, causing it to shut off. And that is the reason :) But I can agree that there is no good reason for the machines being in their current states and there should be way more failsafe or what not in there! And of course other random non user caused failures can happen, but they seem very rare. Ty for the video, stay safe!
@wheellifejon2 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right and I am kicking myself for not being clearer in the video. The problem is 9 times out of 10, rider error, asking the wheel to do too much. Energy can spike past threshold levels for the smallest of reason when the wheel is at maximum, making the likelihood of failure much higher than at any other time. Thanks for the input! Stay safe.

Agree.. We like torque and all but jd rather have development on safety than more speed.. To be fair I think the v13 has some new safety features (not saying the v22 doesn't, I just don't know enough of it)

One thing that I've learned in my experiences is not to go too fast or try tricks and stunts when I'm fatigued. One evening, after a long day at work, I got on my wheel to practice jumping and bonking curbs. I tried to jump a pothole, and in a lack of good judgment, I ended up landing right in the pothole. I went straight down as my wheel came to an abrupt stop. Just like you said, my knees hit the pavement first, followed by my hands, and then my chest. Fortunately, I walked away from the ordeal with only a sprained wrist and a few minor scratches, which healed in a few days. My wheel was fried, and I had to put a new controller in it. At 50 years old, I'm not as sharp as I used to be, so I really should have waited until I was well rested before practicing advanced skills that require more stamina and strength.

if already flying at high speeds, you should be above the wheel and knees bent a lot. What you shouldn't do is be way over top/in front of the wheel and standing what you think is upright, thus applying more force on a wheel that's already pushing hard.

Thanks for all the awesome and informative content you continue to provide for us pioneers of personal electric transportation. I actually fell hard for the first time on my V8F a few hours ago whilst going at about 32Km/h - riding tucked and then attempting to Brake normally on seeing oncoming traffic… This I believe sent me into a violent speed wobble which I couldn’t recover from! I Luckily I didn’t slide under the approaching traffic. I took a mildly bruised hip, some minor abrasions on my shoulders and ankle and also banged my head on the asphalt which luckily had a helmet on ! Could’ve been a lot worse!!! I’ve had my wheel for about 180Km now and that’s the first time ever that I’ve actually been thrown off! I've been riding up and down steep slopes and over uneven surfaces with zero issues as the terrain here in Seychelles is very mountainous! I'm certainly going to be very very careful now about considering tucking at high speed on a light 16 inch wheel like mine! I consider myself extremely fortunate!!

Do you think that attatchable slide/ skid plates on the bottoms of shoes would help some people at least be able to “skate “ out of a crash as opposed to trying to run out of it ? We both have watched enough crashes to know that a majority involves the rider, putting their foot down first trying to bring the other one alongside it, but the traction of the sneaker then takes over and it does its job and stopping you from slipping but not running at 45 mph. If there were no traction and your foot slid the other would be able to come in and help and you could just slide out to a stop on your feet. Maybe even have time to squat down put your hands to the ground to help or if you’re good enough, just surf it out on the bottoms of your feet.

Trying to correct an unexpected wobble at a high speed sounds like the most likely culprit of many crashes. Wobble can be started by turbulence to minor user error. I agree with your conclusion but would probably put protective gear at number one or two.👍🏽

Pro Tip: If you own a powerful wheel capable of riding about 70 kmh like Begode Rs19 and many other or Inmotion V12Hs, then dont wear those trash wrist protectors, and wear Motorcycle Gloves, Preferably high quality ones, mine have survived 3 cut outs at 2 different speeds on 2 different wheels. Something worth to also consider in a chest armor, after my first cut oof at 35kmh (Even tho it was low speed), I slid 4 Meters on my Hands and chest + Boots, Even tho my Boots had the outer leather scrapped, and my Hands had no damage whatsoever, I had a very strong internal cheast pain for 2 Weeks. Now I dont leave without full armor, because you never know when a cut off hits you

Sadly, it's only a matter of time before some dick on a wheel is going to lose it at high speeds in a populated area, and that 60, 70, even 100 lb wheel is going to bounce into a pedestrian at high speed head on and seriously hurt them or kill them... That rider will get in some serious trouble, probably see jail time and probably be sued for everything they have. Wheels will either require expensive insurance policies, or will more likely be completely banned. In these early days, wheel riders have better get it through their skulls, they are representing all EUC riders. If one of you gets them banned for everyone else, you will make a lot of people angry. Slow the F down. Especially in populated areas. If you're on a bike trail around loads of pedestrians / bikers, do not ride 25+ mph, whoosing by them within inches. If you're on a two way street, do not push the limits of the wheel. Do not go down steps if you don't know what's at the bottom of them, as I see people doing on videos going down steps into subways. You won't be able to stop if a pedestrian decides to walk in front of you, and you're a 250+ lb object flying down at them from elevation.

I cant…i must comment: With YOUR experience you should know that the max speed depends ALONE on the ACTUAL voltage. Means ALL this crashes we see, had a good reason: The Voltage dropped and made the MAX speed going down. On one it was the hill behind the tree, on one it was the arm swinging forward and so on and so on. The max speed under LOAD is proportional much lower , the more the voltage is going down. So the slightest pressure can then lead to such high speed cutouts. Yours probably was the baterry getting lower and lower by range…so in the end the 45mph was to much. As long as people do not understand this ….it will never get better. And the producers cant do anything against it…..as its a physical LAW on self balancers. You can integrate speed reduction, tiltback, beeps, whatsoever….when the voltage goes low….but as long as the driver pushes….the EUC must react this way.

@Jonathan Whalley I found 2 footages that you've showed to us that the main cause if not a cut-off but a wobble. Whenever your wheel, in this turn, your EUC experienced it, unless your very experienced the thing that you pointed out the incident that happened inside the tunnel, the wheel actually wobbled which causes an EUC to experience an out of control motion, making the rider fall off. To mitigate wobbles one must slow down once you feel the wobble (but on the video it was also a rider problem, wherein he disregarded the wobble effect and just kept going) and you need to turn your wheel left or right to counter the wobble effect, other reasons why you'd experience a "wobble" are the type of shoes that you wear, the right placement of your foot when riding, fatigue is also a main cause, always have side pads, tire air pressure and overall condition and tire alignment is off.

No... they dont. The lesson is, ride them within theri limitations. They only fail (unless there is a proven manufaturing fault) if they are being abused in some ways. If you have used up the available power doing what you are doing, any bump any acceleration, change of incline, and you are going to be off. Further depending on your battery charge, voltage sag can put you into an unstable relationship between the batteries capacity to supply and demand. Safety gear, obviously a no brainer. Obey the beeps. Understand your wheel and its characteristic strengths and weaknesses. No show boating, nothing to prove, everyone on the road is an assassin out to get you, you wont go far wrong.

I guess you are around my age (50) - have family children etc. how can you do something like this ? I am not trying to insult you here or teach you how to live your life but apart from the funny and jokes - what went through your head when you decided to trust a machine that every day riders report about cutoffs and the internet is full of these videos ? every youtuber has crash stories (most of them even have a footage) with cutoff (and now you too) - you hardly can say "only if I knew there was a systematic problem with these machines" . 45mph ??!!

I am glad you appreciate it. Ruined a perfectly good shoe for that 10 second shot!
