I'm an anomaly, soprano sax is my primary instrument. For me what filled the gap was getting a secondhand overhauled instrument, so I got a secondhand Selmer Series II for £2500 as opposed to £4000. Absolute beauty.

It is my fourth year playing saxophone, I quickly excelled in alto during my first two years, and I switched to baritone at the beginning of my third year, and hopefully next year I will get the opportunity to play soprano.

Purchased in silver. Beautiful, and I love it! Thank you for recommending it. I held off, as a relative beginner, because of recommendations to start with tenor or alto. I think I should have gotten what I really wanted to begin with. (Stuck that cleaning cloth directly after first time playing it. Going to immediately find something different.)

I'm a relative beginner saxophonist. I started with an Allora ASPS-250 student soprano sax. It's the house brand of Woodwind & Brasswind. I have no complaints. It's easy to play but, a bit heavy. I recently bought the Jean Paul intermediate curved soprano. I don't remember the model number. I didn't like it much at first. Now I love it. It felt a little cramped on the right hand keys but, once you get used to it, it isn't a problem. I use a Yamaha 5C and Otto Link 6S for both of them. I didn't like the Jean Paul SS 4 mouthpiece at first. Then somebody gave me a Bflat clarinet reed which fit the SS 4 perfectly width wise and it seemed easier to play with that mouthpiece. It changed the tone a bit but, it was interesting.

That is a very good sounding soprano and I really like the tone. I liked the Concept mouthpiece more.

Nice review. I have been playing alto for quite some time. Last year I decided to add soprano as a second sax, but was looking for a budget instrument (& I wanted a curved soprano to be able to take as carry-on when flying.) I did not want to buy a cheap instrument on-line as you have no idea what you are getting (I live in Europe and Jean-Paul was not shipping to Europe at that time). Fortunately I was able to find a local shop that deals in Karl-Glaser saxes (Chinese made, checked in Germany -- but not to the same extent as Jean-Paul), so I was able to play test before purchase. The first horn I tried had a problem with a sticky key, so I tried a second horn, which had some serious intonation problems. I re-tried the first horn and just cleaned the tone-hole of the sticky key and the problem was solved. The sax does have some intonation problems with the low B & Bb and the ergonomics of the left hand 'pinky-key' table are not good, but for 325 Euros I got a nice looking good sounding horn.

Great info! Thanks Jeremy!! I HIGHLY recommend Saxtuition Beginner Series! I started with it (paid myself), later found a great Professional Teacher, BUT still need to refer to something I need to brush up on and it is ALWAYS at my fingertips on my IPhone, Tablet, or Laptop!! For the price you won’t find a better teacher or course than Saxtuition by Jeremy.

Which Selmer Concept mp is yours? What reed do you like with it?

The mouthpiece with the yellow background sounded much fuller. The blue one sounded too harsh and didn't seem to have as many overtones.

The old nonfamous brands you mentioned were made with the real solid materials, but China is giving us all artificially made things. Even though they had been checked in the US as long as it works mechanically it's good for sale, but it's still made cheap.

As a professional saxophonist for 50 yrs and woodwind technician for 30yrs i find that this is not true if you know how to play and know how to inspect a horn. Some are done very well. A new Selmer out of the box requires 1-2 hrs to play properly

LOL? only talk, talk and NO SOUND... I don't buy any instrument before play. I don't listen sellers. Only my ears. French Name, Miami Company and Made in China? Oh what a shame! No...thanks... Here in Brazil we have Eagle saxofones, soprano SP 502 is killer sax. Very good intonation, tune and more than YSS-475 II affordable price and with dukoff are good I don't pay USD 1.500 in a chinese sax. No way. No...
