@@devyud5719 Bad news. India and Sri Lanka are both members of the Commonwealth. So far as "Africa etc." (sic) is concerned, Egypt, Somalia, Sudan and Zimbabwe are not members of the Commonwealth. Neither is South Sudan, but the government there has expressed an interest in joining. The first three of those countries all have a complicated historical relationships with Britain - Egypt was never a colony; Sudan was (officially) Anglo-Egyptian Sudan and Somalia was divided between the British and the Italians. To balance this, however, Mozambique joined the Commonwealth in 1995, and Rwanda followed suit in 2009. Both countries are part of "Africa etc." and neither had any colonial ties to Britain.

@@heidisexton5928 In order to request to join the Commonwealth, a country has to have a prior constitutional relationship with a current member. That's it. In practical terms, this usually means being a former British colony or protectorate, but that's not always the case. For example, Pakistan was originally part of India, and Bangladesh was originally part of Pakistan. Having said that, the U.S. would be eligible as a former British colony.

Jackie, I think what a wise person takes away from this Commonwealth Day Church Service is the very practical concept and recognition of, "irrespective of parts of our mutual common history and heritage, the bond that still holds us together is far greater than that which could have divided us" . As the Islamic cleric said, "God could have created us all the same but he created us different so we could recognise one another.
