Great video... had fun with one of these recently. My dad is in poor health and I went to spend some time with him. At 90 he can't do his woodworking anymore so I buy and restore old handtools while I visit him. Bought a 100 year old #5, took my tenon saw a rough piece of 4/4 oak and my shooting board, refurbished the plane and cut squared the oak, made a cheeseboard for my niece on his kitchen counter. FUN!

Before you use your plane on a shooting board, make sure to break the edge on the side of the iron. That thing can be quite sharp. I learned this the hard way when I noticed my hand was bleeding after pushing my plane with my hand on on top of it. You can also put a strip of tape on the exposed edge.

I love the way you did this video. To the point, instructive and educational. No BS-just getting to the point and teaching. I love it. My first and only planer is a Harbor Freight. Heard some good and bad things about it. Growing up fishing I learned early how to sharpen a knife. It's sharp and dialed in. The other issue is that I have a weak left arm and hand. I'm grateful that you said early on in the video that you put it in the bench vise. That one comment made it a viable option for me to make it and use it. Will probably add a T-slot to it for Clamping my workpiece.

Just yesterday while working on my sauna I was trying to figure a better way to shave thousandths at a time off end grain without running back and forth through the snow to the miter saw. The algorithm provided this video a day late for this project but I see myself using this great technique in the future. Thanks Jay, great to see neighbours looking after each other as well

My great uncle had one in his hand made carpenters tool box along 6 planes, 2 handsaws, plumb bob, level, auger and many other small hand tools. The tool box was eventually handed down to me. Until today I didn’t know the proper name for the board but knew what it was used for. Thank you.

Very excellent video. I'll pass along a tip for some of your viewers that may not know this. With an electric miter box or chop saw, the instructions will always tell you to use a square to set for 90 degree. A better way, IMHO, is to just cut a piece of 1x6 and then flip it over and hold the blade down while you slide the wood up to it. The smallest error will be easily seen. This can be done if about 2 seconds and by flipping the board over, you multiply the error by two so it's more visible.

Yes, that would work here too, just make sure that the edges of the 1x6 are straight and parallel. Also make sure the edge of the fence is straight. Sometimes wood warps when it's cut.

jfan4reva I believe that the shooting board is the ultimate way to make these cuts. Like most methods from out forefathers, it's foolproof and really fast and easy. I wonder if the Japanese use this method. They are masters.

Great video. A suggestion if the top fence needs fine tuning for square without having to fuss with adding a taper to the fence: Install the first screw closest to the plane; drill a pilot hole into the fence material for the left most screw larger than the screw which will permit fine adjustment of the fence; once the fence is in the right position, install the remaining screws to set the fence firmly in place.

Yes this is a quality video in a lot of ways. Just like the tip to controling the vertical sq with just the tilt of the plane blade. It was a tip I had never heard on any shooting board video. I have watched many shooting board videos even from woodworkers with 40-50 or more years of seasoned woodworking experience.

I want to thank you for this video. After watching, I went out and slapped one together similar to yours. After tuning up my Bailey #6 plane to use, I was slicing off paper thin shavings off end grain of curly maple. Never did I think this was possible. Now I am going to make a smaller shooting board for my low angle plane. Thanks for the inspiration. Wish I could post pics here and I would have shown you the results...

On my original board, after screwing into place and shooting a few boards, I noticed it was slightly out of square. I tried the planing in place method you showed, but that made it worse in the opposite direction. I had to joint the surface of the fence true again and then remount, taking great care that the screws do not displace the fence when tightening.

This was tremendously useful video. I am primarily a power tool user, however I find that as I require more accuracy or if my smaller support cross pieces and such are about 1/16" too long it can mess up my shelf placement to a perpendicular face leaving a gap. I have a small block plain that just sits on the shelf, now from watching your informative video it will come to life and be used nearly everyday in L.T. Wood workshop. Thanks Jay.

That is a good build, you are the first person I have seen apart from myself that allows for an outfield area on the board. I don't see why it is not the common way to build shooting boards. You have a seriously nice collection of back saws on the wall behind you during the intro. All the best..

That tip of squewin the plane blade to bring the vertical into sq. Was an excellent tip it's one I've heard for the first time on all the videos of shooting boards I have watched : videos from some very seasoned woodworkers. The tip of sq. N the horizontal sq I could have figured that for my self. Thanks for sharing such a simple tip.

I live in an apartment. I also have Dick neighbors. I wanted to get into wood working using power tools but after getting a planer for my spare bedroom, yeah, I would've been evicted. So, I decided to try hand tools. Well, now I'm addicted 💯 and I can't get enough tools. Learning how to make tools while using hand tools is an accomplishment you just can't explain. That is a good idea to place the back block in from the end of the flat timber to prevent the plane from tilting as this could put your cuts off not realising until it is too late

Another great video! I can trace most of my improvements as a woodworker back to being more accurate in layout and squareness. My shooting board is almost identical to this and was one of those game changers for me. Even for something as simple as a pocket screwed face frame I'd that much better with ends squared on a shooting board.

Very cool. Thanks for details. Just a thought: If you made a wider board with the same setup on the other side, you'd get a longer, more even use out of the blade before sharpening. Just flip the plane on the other side. Maybe even be able to test the squareness from time to time by marking the endgrain and running a couple of passes on each side. Great job explaining your process. Keep up the good work!

I like that very much. It is a great idea. never heard of it before but I have a suggestion. You mentioned blowout that would lead to your work piece chipping out at the fence because of tipping the plane. Since you have the fence set so nice use it as is and when it blows out add a piece right in front of it. If you use it that much and it blows out again, remove the the added piece and flip it 180 degrees. I like this. There is nothing better than nice smooth end grain. Thanks

Jay: great build. The little tips ( wax, chamfer, etc) are great. I appreciate the detail in your work. I will use your build as a base but I think I will try to extend the usage with an add on. I do see great applications for the insert for frames and trim. My intention is to create a 45 degree ramp that will allow me shoot meters on 2” boards for mitered corners which are ultimately locked by a spline.
