She repeatedly bullied Shoko because she likes/has a crush on Ishida and he's (since Shoko came into their lives for good or bad) always paid more attention to her. So it's out of Jealousy. The real POS is the Glasses Girl (Whose name escapes me for some reason) because she never faces up to being a bully like Ueno does.
@taepoustouflant3 жыл бұрын
Her name is Kawai and yes, I completely agree. But for me, the real villain of the story is the teacher. This man was so irresponsible that he blamed a kid for bullying by saying "we all know it's you". IF YOU KNEW THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU DO SOMETHING? And he has the audacity to get angry at them and to blame only Shoya when he knew it was everyone. It pisses me off so much because he's often forgotten when he's literally the start of everything. If he had done something to help Shoko interact with others and to be easy on her, then Ueno wouldn't find Shoko annoying, and the bullying probably wouldn't have started. No, even if it did, he should have done something to stop it, instead of silently watching it until they all destroyed their childhood and life. Sorry for the rant but really... I can't help but get angry at this.

Hi! I am Japanese! First of all, thank you for watching a Japanese movie! I like this movie. After all it is interesting that the way of thinking is different between Japan and foreign countries. What Ishida and Ueno did when they were in elementary school is really wrong. I like Ueno's character. I guess Ueno cares about Ishida and she thinks their happy days were destroyed by Nishimiya. You know, you get angry if someone turned the life of your loved one into hell,right? I think Ueno is short of words. It may be strange because I am using a translator! @Depreskull2 ай бұрын
@@MrHale late reply but meh, yea no, the thing about this movie (mostly manga as there is more focus on other characters) is that, they all have faults, Ueno wasn't bulling Shoko just bc she was deaf, Ueno was one of first ones to help Shoko however due to helping her she had problems herself, so with simple logic of kid that they were at time "if me doing something, cause me to suffer, i don't want to do this" and so Ueno tried to keep Shoko away which Shoko didn't understand and kept coming to her, not to mention Ueno was feeling guilty for what happened to Shoya and that guilt she threw at what she thought was reason of it all, Nishimiya also if you notice Ueno is doing what Ishida is doing, when she saw he became friends with Shoko etc. she wanted to do the same but with him, Ueno tried to have peace with Nishimiya (even while hating her) so she could be closer with Shoya but then both Ueno and Shoko didn't understand each other finishing with fight in hospital, Ueno had right TO BE ANGRY (not to fight) as due to Shoko (someone Ueno dislikes) her loved one can die (if he would wake up wasn't clean at the moment). In other words, you don't have problems if you understand Ueno's behaviour as that's what you should do, understand why someone if happening so you could prevent it in future, also understanding isn't the same as saying that's right thing to do, i understand Ueno's character yet i don't think her actions were any good (well expect caring of Shoya in hospital as that's not something you can argue was bad)

Then my father died out of nowhere, last year. When I watched it made me reflect to accept life again and see what I'm missing out so much. Apparently in Japanese “love” and “moon” sound similar, or can, so in the dub it doesn’t really work

Actually, it kinda can. She could've been saying I like you as "I like moon"

I really prefer the manga to the movie. There's just not enough time to flesh out the backstories. Like how Shoya's sister had like 3 boyfriends, one of them helping to beat up the guy who stole Shoya's shoes etc. Also, Ueno had a huge crush for Shoya since elemtary school, that's why she hates Shoko so much.

I think this is the best they could have done with a 2 hour long movie . They can though make a short series in the future to justify the manga completely

Sometimes it is hard to forgive yourself for all the horrible things you have done in the past. Seeking redemption you know you don't deserve. This movie for me is about coming to terms with your past mistakes and trying to be better. Sometimes forgiving yourself is the hardest thing to do...That is why having someone by your side who can show you different perspective, not just self doubt and self hate is such a crucial thing.

It’s sad to think that in reality Shota was too scared to see or hear anyone. He developed terrible depression and anxiety and thought everyone hates him and thought everyone would give him hateful stares in reality; that wasn’t the truth. The reason why he was able to open up again at the end of the movie was because he finally realized how beautiful life is, and realized the value of it.

It's not 100% said that Shokos mom ripped it out but it definitely seems that way. I think in the anime they wanted to leave it up to interpretation. Either Ishidas mom ripped it out to say she was sorry and give "an eye for an eye" or Shokos mom ripped it out because Ishidas actions were unforgivable.

Yeah the manga is so much more powerful, I understand how they had to leave some of it out. It also helps explain how much disabilities are looked down on even more there then say here in the US, its a cultural thing from what I have read. Glad that these kinds of things are starting to finally change in this world.

Ueno is like the most misunderstood character in the show. Mostly cause of the little info the movie gives us about her. in the manga, she hates Nishimiya cause she gets by easy just cause she is deaf (the reading scene in the beginning is an example of that where Ueno wasnt good and "heard" it from the teacher) while Ueno lives with her unemployed grandpa and her 3 younger brothers. She has to work to provide for them. She is also in love with Ishida ofc. anyway, she is just a very interesting character that got moved to the side cause there wasn t a lot of time in a movie
@aniflowers19983 жыл бұрын
I personaly think her characters gets easier to understand if one watches the movie more than once. I think I watched it 7 or 8 times by now? And I alredy realiced by my secound watch through that Ueno, while still beeing mean, actually isn't wrong with a lot of the things she says. I feel like a lot of people forget to see things from her perspective becouse they are so used to having a "villain" for a show/movie, so they just pick the character that fits that role to most.

You were so surprised how the kids can be mean to such a nice girl. Don't you know how extremely cruel kids can be? Especially towards something different they don't know or understand. Kids can be really horrible too, they don't even realise the amount of damage they are doing to others...

Especially how they don't know what its does to others. Until it happens to them, they don't understand. In this movie, he ends up with similar treatment, and understands what he had done.

I remember watching this film during my time at high school. I was sitting on the floor in the corner of the library - which happened to be situated on the top floor of the school - I think everyone was just chatting and doing whatever, I can't remember why we weren't working. Anyway - I was scrolling through Netflix and I found the film sitting there so I decided to give it a chance - I hadn't watched anime before so it was a new thing for me. I know that watching it at that moment didn't make me cry - but I definitely teared up a little later on - probably when I got back to my room. I'm a victim of bullying myself and seeing bullying portrayed in film is always difficult to watch - y'know? I just love this film so much. It has an important message and I hope that people understand what it's trying to get across to them.

I actually suggested this movie to my kids school about 1 or 2 years ago because it depicts bullying and its consequences in such an amazing way. I had both my daughters watch this as well because I didn't feel explaining it would have as much impact as seeing it. They both cried and I cried with them.

This movie broke me when I first saw it. I was bullied in two schools and I remember all to well how this all feels. You don't want to stand out, telling others is almost impossible and the class conversation about the situation is the scariest thing in the world. They showed it so well here. A lot of kids just love to point at one person and say that 'He did it! I did nothing wrong, the kid that was being bullied just should be different'. My teachers did not really respond to it either, my school tried to pretend everything was fine after one conversation. As if that did anything. As if that stopped anything. As if that eased the pain my mom went through. The fact is, that 18 years later, I am still recovering. I hope that this movie helped someone. If one person stopped bullying someone or if someone spoke out after seeing this, than I am happy that it was made. Sorry for my rambling.

The part where the X falls from everyone’s face is the most emotional part for me. I got good old social anxiety and have been unable to talk to or look people in the eye. It was really emotional to see that scene because I understand. But like him I’m trying to talk to people! I locked myself in my house for 2 years and recently I can finally step outside without panicking!

I usually watch the Japanese version, because the words they use have different meaning. Like when she confessed. She said I love you but in Japanese version it’s Dai(suki), and when he misheard her it was because he heard Tsuki(moon). That’s why he randomly says Moon. So when they just translate directly it comes off as weird in English dubs. Just in case you guys didn’t know^^

Ueno's character is actulallty very misunderstood and hated, while ofcourse her attitude was so misplaced thats how she came about to express her actual feelings towards the main character since she does like him she hates Nishimiya or atleast she blames her for whatever happened to the group of friends they had. shes not evil just becuz but it is expected behaviour from a jealous teenager. i love this movie to death, every character has depth and it basically shouts that everyone has a flaw and nobody's perfect but we can cope and live with that trying our best to try and get some understanding of the people around us.

In the scene where the journal fell into the river, shoko jumped first to get it back. While she was jumping off, Ishida tried grabbing her hand. Then he jumped after her. If you think about it, that is some hard foreshadowing to the balcony scene. A real heavy moment of realization when I though about it.
