Animes that I think you should watch whether it's for the channel or your own time that are like this movie, are Orange, Say I Love You, Kids on the slope and Re:Life. These are all animes that are beautifully done while also telling the story of just life and the struggles one goes through as they navigate it.

That is quite interesting. Not all of us get to experience these films and series so early on from before and after becoming parents so the experience of having children must really change your perspective even more. I feel the same way. This movie just destroys you and builds you back up at the same time, so I can only imagine what it must feel like also now being a father, let alone those of us who are also mothers. I can’t really picture myself having children in the future, but I’d never want them to have to go through what Shouko or the others have. If I did have a child who was deaf though I would still love them with all my heart as they would still be perfect to me. That is just one of the things this film shows us. ❤️

Horribly enough, I learned in my Child Psychology class that not only is the bullying we see here an accurate depiction of how disabled children are bullied, it can actually escalate even further in real life and result in much worse injuries. Once you know that, the whole movie hits harder and I am not going to lie, unmanly as it makes me, I cry watching this movie.

5:31 Noooo he was! The teacher covered his mouth to hide his laughter. It's more obvious in the manga, I guess, since reactors who watch this movie don't catch that detail either. It's why I despise the teacher so much. He completely ignored the bullying, put all the responsibility of helping Nishimiya on Ueno (this is in the manga only), and blamed everything on Ishida only when the principal came to his class. All the kids are immature and annoying, but the teacher is an adult, he's fucked up, I hated him so much.

I agree with you completely. Their classmates had room for improvement as depicted in the play. So I have some hope for them in the future. But I don't feel that from the teachers. Instead, he ran away from solving the problem, understanding that there was bullying going on, so that the kids, the boss, and even some viewers would not find out. It is very insidious, and I find him repulsive. However, it is also true that there are people like him, and the fact that he did not turn a blind eye to this fact makes this film great.

And that’s why Ueno hates so much Nishimiya, even though it’s not the fault of Nishimiya, Ueno hated her, because she accepted her fate to be left aside and fake smiled while trying to be the perfect girl victim, that’s why when Nishimiya catches Ueno on the outside of the hospital they become closer, because Ueno understood that Nishimiya was finally fighting for herself and not only accepting fate

Kawai is also one of the worst characters imo. She played victim the whole time and put the blame on Ishida. She spoke behind Shouko's back and stood by - even laughed along - as she got bullied yet she believes herself to be innocent. Ishida was right in insulting her at the bridge as she only thinks of herself. At least Ueno was always honest and open about her bullying Shouko - she was the only one brave enough to call out everyone else (her treatment to Shouko is still unjustifiable and awful though). I personally prefer someone who is honest about being mean than someone who does it quietly and acts like your friend.

Everyone in that classroom was responsible for Shouko's bullying. Shoya took things way too far, but everyone else emabled him by not correcting him properly and fully supporting Shouko. He may have been her bully, but once she left everyone else used him as a scapegoat for their guilt. You really got to see the ugly in everyone. Shoya had his karma in the early stages of his experience with being bullied, but eventually everyone took advantage of him and labeled him. When we fully label, we restrict and because of that Shoya was taught to hate himself instead of heal himself. It's his main reason for being suicidal, not only did he feel guilt from what he did tp Shouko but he felt like he amounted to nothing and could never change. People continued to take worsen his social anxiety and depression until he made the decision to show Shouko that he was truly sorry from the depths of his conscience. They both are going to have it hard as the deaf girl and the monstrous bully, but together they bond over trauma and learn how to forgive others and themselves while rightfully holding others accountable. The movie is really about being able to take responsibility and repent for your violent actions, to learn how to truly heal from your sins and how to love yourself again, and to be able to form connections and accept your past with people you know and don't know.

everyone in that classroom bullied shouko. yes ishida was the main assailant but no one did anything to stop him, everyone laughed at shouko's expense and even joined in on the bullying sometimes. when push comes to shove, ishida got pinned as the bully (as he should) but everyone was equally as guilty in my book. god i hated all of the beginning characters except shouko. i began to have sympathy for ishida especially in that scene where his mom burned the money he saved up to pay her back for the hearing aids. kids are mean and they can make mistakes but ishida showed true remorse for his actions and hated himself for what he did to shouko. i wonder if he would still feel that way if his friends never alienated and bullied him which followed him through different schools, because that's the only reason he really got to put himself in her shoes. this movie is about forgiving yourself for your past, growing, and learning to love yourself. i adore it and it's one of my favorite movies but i have only watched it twice. it's just so hard to watch

In the manga, we are given so much more information on what happened in the time Shoko was at the school. The bullying lasted very long, and even in a situation where shoya was caught, that same teacher literally said he understood why he treated her like that. That he also saw her as frustrating and a burden. Him saying that solidified in Shoya’s mind that “this is how shoko is supposed to be used”. Making him see her as nothing but a stress reliever. A toy to play with. So that teacher, in my eyes, deserves everything that shoya went through ten fold.

Two things I'd like to say about this movie that I didn't see in the comments. Having someone do a full bow(down to the floor) is one of the biggest signs of respect that you can give someone in many Asian cultures. Which is why the mom basically starts crying when they do it, knowing the meaning behind the bow and what it means makes this scene so much more heart wrenching. This also applies for asking for forgiveness. The things she brought out of the bag that were colorful were origami paper cranes - in Japanese culture you fold 1,000 to grant a wish, which is why she said they were trying to do a full 1,000 but was upset they didn't make it.

In defense of Ueno’s ending in the film, her actions were indeed reprehensible and she really was one of the worst characters but that ending was very fitting for her. The story showed that she was the most resistant on resolving the past as she was heavily fixated on it, and yet by the end she actually put in effort to learn to sign even a tiny bit to communicate with Nishimiya which speaks volumes. Change can start with the tiniest of steps

Honestly the girl I hated the most this movie was Kawai (The Blondie) she was constantly denying she did anything wrong and played the good guy, the hero and refused any responsibility while butting her nose where it didn't belong. When she asked Ishida to apologize to Nishimiya it made me upset mainly because she was trying to act like the "peacekeeper" when in all honesty they were the ones that needed to work it out, they didn't need her to try move things along. She was such a hypocrite blaming every single thing on Ishida never considering he felt bad or ashamed, not even feeling ashamed herself for what SHE did. She basically tried to justify what she did by blaming it on others, calling them out when it wasn't needed and acting as the "Good person" in the situation. Forgive me for my rant she genuinely just made me really upset mainly because I hate people who refuse to admit they were wrong or did something bad. In the end, Ueno signing moron actually means more. It showed that she was finally going to put EFFORT. Throughout the entire movie she’s been terrible to everyone, especially Shouko. She’s been focused on the past and not trying to help her present which led to a lot discourse with the other characters. Her signing moron shows that she’s ready to improve as a person. She is most definitely not redeemed but she’s again, putting EFFORT to finally bettering herself. Later on being older, meeting kou again, she thought she could bring back the gang again. As much as I don't like Ueno, she's probably one of the most honnest. She may be rough and cruel but she's speaking facts. The whole class let Ishida take the blame when they all had a part in it. Knowing but doing nothing doesn't make you any better than the one active in the bullying. Kawai is a character that upset me way more by her fakeness and the "innocent girl" vibe she tries to send. Ueno cares for Ishida and she was a kid back then. What about the teacher who, apparently, knew Ishida was responsible but didn't do anything to stop the bullying until the proofs were right behind his nose ? Kids do mistakes, mostly because they apply what they see from adults. If you don't tell a kid it's bad, if you don't punish them, they will keep going. And not even talking about how disability is handle in our societies... At least, Ueno is trying to change at the end, at her own pace. It's actually quite easy to learn the basics of sign language, like "hello" or "thank you". I think it's someone we really should teach people as a daily basis. Being deaf is problematic because the society do very little to ease the life of those people. If you're interested, you really should check it out. There's a lot on youtube already.

I would argue that doing the act IS usually different than just being a bystander. Bystanders can be problematic because allows the 'normalization' but they also usually aren't instigators (I can think of a few exceptions where people join the perpetrator to actively encourage malicious activity but I would also separate that from what most people think of as bystanders). By claiming they are the same you are claiming collective action or inaction can be blamed on individuals. While there may be a bit of room to encourage action it's often not realistic for each individual to have the energy, courage, or care for every act of injustice around them. The teacher is bad because he is in a position of guidance and authority yet is actively neglective when knowing the situation. Some people just don't know what to do or how to act when bad things are happening around them. Ueno actively helped like throwing the hearing aid to Ishida. If anything Kawai targets Ishida, rather than Nishimiya, mostly when they're in high school - some of which are reactions to what could be honest presumptions. Kawai's problem is her image which evolved from being a follower as a kid to fit in to the exceptionalism she grows into as a teen.

@@wombat4583 Because I believe in it. I don't care that they don't have the courage to act, the result is the same. And I talk from the point of view of someone people tried to abuse at school and who help someone who was. I'm not trying to sell myself as a hero or anything but I had my own personal problems. Yet, I did something. That's why I want to explain to kids harasment is a bad thing, that it doesn't just start when you play an active role in it. Someone who would be abused and find no help in their peers will feel even more isolated. Because if no one act, it's normal to be bullied, to feel so awful. So if nobody care, why even try to fight ? Better be gone forever. That the mindset this type of behavior could lead to. That's why education is the key, and punishment. And I don't think anyone is lost forever either. With the proper care, a bully can become someone good who understand their mistake. Because they're just kids, they need limits. Anyone deserves a second chance if we can understand why they acted that way and try to change.

@@dogti2959 If you put 500 perpetrators together in on place and 50 perpetrators with 450 bystanders the outcome is very likely to be different even if there are problems in both groups. I've been the victim, the bystander, and the person to take action. Most people are all of them as well as likely been a perpetrator in their life intentionally or not (which is an entire other conversation, and yes even "good" people hurt others). She also has a severe lack of empathy that has persisted into her teenage years that is borderline sociopathic and her only redeeming quality is actually the reason she does some of her worst acts so it's irrelevant. you guys mentioned symbolism so here's a few i caught! 1. koi fish are big in asian culture and we see them a lot in this movie. there's a legend of a group of koi fish at the bottom of a river. the koi fish would often swim with the current and away from the waterfall, until one day the group tried to swim against it and jump up the water to climb to the top of the waterfall. local demons increased the height of the waterfall to mock the fish and the waterfall kept getting bigger and taller. soon all of the koi fish stopped trying, but one. he scaled the waterfall and when he jumped the last jump to reach the top, he turned into a huge golden dragon. the legend represents facing hardships and overcoming them, not giving up. and then, at the end of it all, come out a better person. it's a story i was told a lot when i was younger and i definitely think it symbolizes ishida and shouko's climb to the "top of the waterfall". 2. i had the same view as bryce about the fireworks! in the beginning ishida is thinking about jumping off the bridge when his train of thought is interrupted by a small firework and so he walks away from the bridge choosing not to kill himself. in contrast shouko thinks about all the pain she has caused ishida during the firework show, but she doesn't step away like ishida and follows through with her plan. it's also important to point out the scenes of the other friends- they're all alone watching the fireworks. shouko is not, as she is with her family and ishida, but she feels more alone than ever. even when ishida signs "together" she doesn't feel it. that's made clear with how much space is between them physically representing what she feels in her heart due to her guilt.

At the start most of people thinking like “Ishida you such a a jerk”, but his “friends” the same. They just staring and laughing about Ishida’s action and do nothing. They are totally jerks alongside with Ishida, I mean at that childhood time. But all of “trophies” going to Ishida, cause he’s doing shit things

When Ueno said to Nishimiya about understanding her, she didn’t mean it literally the words she spoke. She meant her as a person and the situation she was put in with having Nishimiya in the class. Because they’re in a hearing school, Nishimiya would’ve needed A LOT of extra help, especially in Japanese schools since they’re notoriously more difficult than any western school. The movie isn’t clear about it but Ueno was the one who had to help Nishimiya keep up in class but ended up falling behind in class herself, hence why she needed Kawai’s notes during the staircase scene. It definitely wasn’t the Nishimiya’s fault, it was more the school and her mother’s fault for putting her in a general school instead of a school that could actually cater to her needs. Ueno definitely could’ve handled it better or told someone “hey, helping Nishimiya is hurting my own grades, can someone else help her?” Or something like that. But let’s be honest. She’s a kid. She wouldn’t have the foresight to do that and would’ve handled it the way she thought would work and she did. It was awful, for sure. But it’s not like she had NO reason to resent Nishimiya, however misplaced it is.

Tbh no one in this movie deserved to be Shoko’s friend. Even the main male character is still half trash for what he did when he was a kid. The rest are just plain ignorant, uneducated, twisted, egotistical, narcissistic, narrow, privileged & plain shitty. The whole class reaction when she said she can’t hear is just plain hilarious (note the sarcasm). They’re old enough to understand but reacted SO F privileged and childish.

Try "Josee, the tiger, and the fish" it's even better than a silent voice! Btw. The gift that Shoya got from Kawai was paper cranes. There is a belief that if you make 1000 of them your wish will come true, usually made by friends and family for sick people. Ueno is still better than Kawai. I hate her so much, she has the victim complex and is narcissistic, but Ueno is horrible and knows about it. Shoko wasn't teaching Ueno ASL, Ueno did it by herself and Shoko was happy about it. Fun fact: The peace sign means "see ya" but just before the jump Shoko instead used the sign for "goodbye" Moon: tsuki Love: suki

I can sorta shed some light on Shoko's arm injury as someone who used to do parkour. Assuming she is around 5'6 (My height) based on context, she would have fallen around 10' total before Shoyo caught her, which I can say for a fact puts a huge strain on your arms even when done "properly" with both arms. That is her full body weight coming to a very sudden stop after falling for one floor, all being held by her one arm. For reference (If you'll excuse the analogy) it's not all to disimilar from being hung, which breaks your neck when done properly, but replace your neck with an arm instead, so it is very likely she at least dislocated her arm, if not flat out broke it (Not to mention the strain put on her muscles and tendons). The real question is how Shoyo's arm came out fine, given it would have had to deal with the same force (although admittedly he would have been comparitively prepared for said force, compared to Shoko who was not expecting to be caught)

Unpopular opinion: I love Ueno's character. She's such a horrible person, but you can tell that in there somewhere is the capacity for change. With the way she says such self-aware things about herself and the other friends, it's clear that she carries guilt and self-hatred for what she's done and is still doing. Even if she doesn't act on it to better herself now, those feelings are going to keep building until she does, for better or worse. By the end of the movie, she shows the smallest of signs of change when she learns a single word in sign language. They don't show her improve within the movie, but this little gesture shows that she will, even if it's slower than Ishida. The other girls (Kawai and Sahara) aren't shown to improve, either, though Sahara admits to her wrongdoing (the first step in growth) while Kawai still pretends to be a saint. Ueno and Sahara are the most likely to become better people and better friends. Kawai might never change (or at least not in the forseeable future). Ueno is probably my favorite character besides Ishida and Nishimiya because her character represents how one person learning and growing can inspire others to look beyond their ego and also learn and grow, even if that process is akin to slamming a jawbreaker against a table until you see the smallest of cracks.

It’s been said to death about this movie, but it still rings true every time. I love the fact that this movie isn’t a story of a guy and a girl falling in love, but is instead a story about a guy learning to love himself again. And Shoko’s smile in that very last scene is my breaking point every time, because it just shows that the one Shoya hurt the most became the one he cared the most for, and him for her. Absolutely beautiful story from start to finish

This is an old video, but I need to comment because I see a lot of people defending Uenos behavior, and tbh, the movie does too. There are just some things that can’t be forgiven, I believe. You can move on from them, you can become a better person, but when lines are passed, you’ll never be “good”. If Ueno still held an irrational grudge from childhood, fine, yeah, that’s a reasonable characterization. People are different, some hold stupid grudges and eventually get over them. Ueno not only bullied Nishimya as a child, but 1. Pulled her hearing aids out the moment they meet again after YEARS of not communicating. 2. Talks bad about her behind her back constantly, fully believing she’s a burden and nothing more. 3. Lured her into a false sense of comfort by acting kind and inviting her on a Ferris wheel, only to punch/shove her and continue to shit-talk once Nishimiya declares that she doesn’t hate Ueno. 4. Beats her tf up and physically fights her mom after she LITERALLY TRIED TO KILL HERSELF LIKE, A DAY AGO 5. Takes Nishimiyas apology/makeup/sorry I tried to kill my self gift and then slams the door on her. 6. After all that, is buddy-buddy friends with everyone and never has any form of consequences for her actions, except for getting slapped like, once. She just????? Why. I’m sorry but there’s just no forgiving this character. I don’t understand why the movie forgives her, or anyone else. Kawai sucks too, being self-centered and gaslighting everyone into believing that she wasn’t actively an abuser too, but at least it seems like she didn’t continue to mess with Nishimiya when she grew up.

It's very common to invite people from outside school to your school fest. Family and friends. So it's not unusual at the end that they're there. Glad y'all reacted to this. It's a great film. And god, losing 8 hearing aids. My mom has one pair and they're like a thousand dollars or some shit. Of course, mom's got the new nice ones now with Bluetooth connectivity and everything, but hearing aids have ALWAYS been expensive, and while Deaf people can totally go without if they want - especially people born deaf - hearing people will judge TF out of you if you don't have or use them. Regardless of the fact that there's a total barrier of entry due to both price and whether they'll work for you (and, you know, you shouldn't have to if you don't want to). Maybe Japanese hearing aid companies don't price gouge so much. I remember health care stuff being generally more affordable, just like everywhere else in the world. Not so sure about medical device tech, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I have always seen reactors or other people who watch this movie hate the boy( i.e. the main character)in those early scenes,it's not that I dislike people hateing his actions. I dnt Condone bullying and also do think that the way she was treated in the movie was bad and she didn't diserve any of it. Moving on from that the point I want to give out is that the boy is a kid ,im pretty sure he doesn't even understand what he is doing or the consequences for all his actions, ofcourse it may not necessarily justify his actions but another point to this is that he was not doing all that for his amusement but for others, that is their classmates . If you all noticed it or not he doesn't start bullying her from the moment she enrolled in their class but it starts after he hears others shit-talking about her. Looking more into his character we can understand that he did all that to stay relevant and important or noticable in his class. He is visibly confused when it all backfires and he instead starts getting bullied. And it's only when he saw his mother withdraw large sum of money he understood that his actions were not something that can be just Laughed-off. This is a great movie where it touches the all sides of bullying properly (the one responsible ,the bystanders and the victim of the bullying) I just want people to be more understanding towards his character.I also support the thought that it is because that most people view bullying as simple as a scenario of perpetrators and victims is why there is no effective way to stop" Bullying".His character is discovered more properly and in more depth in the manga.

If you realised the title a silent voice is actually about Shoya. The movie started with him silencing the whole world, closing himself from letting the world around him into his life. At the end of the movie, Shoya finally opened himself up, and letting everything flowing through his ears. That's when the film score started playing intensely, as all sounds of the surroundings enters his ears, and fills his life with colours again.

I recommend the anime series A Sign of Affection. It's a slice-of-life anime that feature another deaf female-lead, and is much lighter in tone compared to this movie so there's no need to worry about your heart being metaphorically ripped out. Shoko didn't break a bone from when she jumped and Ishida caught her. She dislocated her shoulder at least and some muscle straining and likely some bruising from his grip, but no broken bones.
