A Silver Dial Explorer? Rolex Oyster Perpetual 116000 Review

Great review. Helped convince me this was the OP for me and so I recently picked one up on the secondary market as they are no longer available from Rolex. Want to add the following information I learned in my research on this model in case anyone else is looking into this Rolex OP 116000 Silver dial with 369 Explorer layout. The silver 369 dial variant 116000 was discontinued by Rolex somewhere before 2017 because this dial does not appear in 2017-18 catalogue. Also, there were some changes made to the 36 OPs in the late 2015 to 2016 time frame. The following changes occurred 1) The hour and minute hand became slightly wider and the minute hand is slightly shorter as it does not reach the outer 60 second track on the dial. This serves to make the hands more visible and the lume is easier to see 2) The inner clasp was changed from frosted finish to polished and the clasp release changed from hinged to spring loaded 3) The rehaut changed from an engraved outline of the ROLEX letters, serial # and crown to a laser etched rehaut which is more visible and appears to be filled in. I think it's worth noting these changes as there are two slightly different versions of this dial variant 116000 around and the latter was only made for a year or two before the dial variant was retired.

I've had this watch for about 6 months now, and it is an absolute joy to wear. I have bigger wrists at 7" but I think it wears so nicely. It's a fanastic everyday piece that can be dressed up or down, and I especially love that I get a modern bubbleback feel, so I also get that vintage itch scratched as well. Truth be told this video helped convince me to get it :)

Great video. I assumed i was going to get the blue dial because it looks so good in photos, but after trying on several different dial colors I chose the silver. 7.5” wrist and could not be happier.

I've been looking for a Rolex that I can wear at anytime with it being as clean as possible and want this one to be smaller than 40mm as I own another watch that is 40mm (Seiko Blue Hole). I saw this video and it's perfect! Preferably wanted the Explorer but the prices on those are ridiculous and I found this one at a better deal and having it as silver is also great. Great review, bought my first Rolex and luxury watch in general.

Great episode Mike! Beautiful watch and you’re so right about coming down from a 44mm to a sub 40mm watch, it takes a while for it to start looking acceptable on my 7.5in wrist. I’m starting to think my sweet spot is now 40mm, I’m coming away from the larger sizes as I get older and more understated with my style of watch

Hi David, thanks for watching and for the comment. Rolex does not offer an explorer dial version of the OP in anything bigger than 36mm. There is a wonderful 39MM Explorer, the 214270 that is available in 39MM however. If you get one, or go shop for one, I strongly recommend that you seek the MK2 dial. Cheers!

I never found that to be an issue, sometimes the hands appear black, depending on the light.

I like this watch but the dilemma is the Tudor 58 is about half the price with that great inhouse movement. Just the same this watch with black dial would be a strong Explorer "value play". I wish you would have shown how the new clasp adjusts when you were showing the bracelet.

Just to be clear about the chronometer rating: it isn’t done by Rolex. So, it’s not that it “never leaves the factory,” because it must to go to Contrôle officiel suisse des chronomètres (the outside entity that tests all Swiss chronometers). Roughly 3% of the watches sent to COSC pass and measure up to their standards. So, rest assured if it is COSC approved, you’re in good hands.

Great vid, chuffed to bits… I wear a 36mm explorer on 6.75in wrist; easily big enough. Note 904L is notoriously easy to scratch compared to proprietary steels, not the other way around worst luck!

Beautiful watch. For what it is it should be more around $3500-4000. $6k is a bit steep. And 36mm is literally the perfect size. Can’t tell you how many people I know who swore they’d never wear such a “small” watch, but after putting it on wrist they were converted. Rolex’s 36’s wear more like 38’s.

I own the same watch with dial and white indices, the so called japan limited version. didnt think much of it initially, bought brand new during 2008 simply of its scarce limited ~500 piece run. kept it in box, hardly wear it. until recent months, took it out and replaced with good quality leather straps and man it hugs my wrist so well and 36mm doesnt seem small. it's truly a fine example of being less is more. simple yet the quality is top notch. this is becoming my fav rolexs within collection.

I noticed that when I go from a large watch to a 36, that it looks small at first, but the eye adjusts after a day or two and that stops, then the larger watches look too big when I put them on.
