It sure is a joy. Love it. As far as the modern vs vintage Leica, I don’t have a firm answer as I haven’t side by side tested them. Lately I have developed a liking for the contax zeiss lenses. I have some and have adapted them. For owning lenses, if you can get tried and true vintage for a good price, it could be worth it over buying cine lenses that are 10x the cost. All depends how you plan to use them really. For me currently, I like owning the vintage (but clean) lenses, and renting other lenses for any projects I do.

Hey bro! It’s me again lol. So wanna let you know (because I know your shoot Arri a lot) that there is a color conversion available that ports braw log footage to arri log c. Then you can use the arri Rec 709 lut and also any of the arri look luts or any other logc powergrades/luts you might use. The color conversion is by Emotive color. Basically the guy programmatically (he has a very legit setup) maps the sensor readout from the input camera to the input readout of arri. I use the conversion and have done EXTENSIVE blind tests and the BMlog to logc to the arri rec709 always looks better than bmlog to bm rec709. It is a log to log conversion so non destructive and you can treat the whole grade as logc (I start with an exposure mode, then the log to log) then the rest of the pipeline is treated as logc. It is only available for certain cams. I use the p6k one. I have found braw to be pretty consistent so the conversion works great on any braw. I also shoot braw on my s5iix and the conversion works great. Hit me up if you have any questions. I know you have an eye for the nuances in images. You will instantly be like OMFG. It is pretty crafty what this guy did with sensor mapping. P.s. just picked up a pancolar 50mm 1.8 to match with the 20mm and 35mm jenas. The 50mm looks great too!

Upload a test! Even if it’s private.
@NeonCucumber9 ай бұрын
@@BlaineWestropp1 bro… you gotta try it’s worlds different from regular raw tab stuff. He did physical sensor mapping in a controlled environment, both cameras present, with custom software. The reason… emotive is actually translating what the input camera saw vs what the arri saw. He does it in a physical lab setup using a program he wrote. Put it this way… we were looking to add a ronin 4D to our fleet for some scenarios. The only thing that stopped us was that an emotive conversion has not been done for it yet. I thought maybe we had confirmation bias so we did blind tests. The emotive conversions literally change the camera in our workflow. Aside from dynamic range obviously not being an Alexa. Everything else image wise changes. Final note (applies to native logc and logc created using emotive). We do not use the davinci logc to 709 lut. We use the logc to 709 downloaded directly from arri. There are differences.

Interesting that you’re hearing that it is “not worth it” the only other proper viewfinder that comes with a camera… costs over $100k. So when I looked through this viewfinder I felt that it was amazing that it had one. I guess depends on how you work. I think a lot of people complaining may not have had much experience with shooting with viewfinders. The purpose, in my opinion is to see an image in a dark space so that the light around you isn’t messing with vision. You don’t spend a whole day in the viewfinder. You look through it periodically. Multiple comments regarding people complaining about the camera which I think is so interesting. Maybe I need to watch some videos on KZbin about this camera!

Internal ND is nice for sure. But.. if I’m walking around or in a situation where I can’t put a matte box on the camera, I don’t mind using a circular. I have heard people complain about the form factor vs. a box camera, not being able to rig it as easily is the main complaint. I have owned neither a pocket camera or a box camera so im wondering how you feel about the form factor in professional use? Edit: Also, would you happen to know if the cropped in formats are over sampling from the full sensor or is its just a crop in?
@BlaineWestropp18 ай бұрын
The cropped formats crop in on the sensor. For the form factor, it really depends what you want to do and how you want to rig it. Any rigged camera ive ever used has tons of stuff attached all over the place, cables everywhere, etc. everything is custom rigged for every job. I would check out the cage options and see if that will get you where you want. Are people wanting to attach monitors to the camera? For this camera, it has a large monitor. It has an eyepiece. So it has what you need to get the shot. It’s hard to answer the question really bc it is so much on a case by case basis and depends how and what you want to shoot. Look at an alexa mini.. it’s a tiny box but you can’t do anything with it until you add 10-15 pounds of rigging, doesn’t make me complain about it.

What are your thoughts on image quality compared to the LF? I guess you’d have that bit of extra dynamic range etc… The looks you showed in this video are very reminiscent of other looks you’ve shown on this channel. Once you go through all the necessary Color Space Transforms, what do you feel is still different compared to grading your LF footage?
@Fedorevsky9 ай бұрын
Very similar, shockingly so. The BM is maybe a bit sharper otherwise very comparable with the same lighting set up and CST used. But of course dynamic range is not the same as you allude to and the biggest difference is in the shadows. Northwest Camera Co. actually just did a comparison here on KZbin. Search for "BMCC6K FF v.s ALEXA MINI LF - How Do They Compare??" to see their tests.

I did not do side by side so I cannot speak on that. But, the footage looks amazing and I was very impressed. Applying my look that I’ve been tweaking over the years to this footage was quick, and easy to adapt to this camera. Pushing around the exposure and colors was smooth and didn’t bring up any issues. It all looked great in my opinion.

@BlaineWestropp19 ай бұрын
Yo! I don’t have the pocket 4k in front of me, but if you think having a 3:2 full sensor is worth it for you (it is for me), yes I would upgrade. That being said, all depends on you. Upgrade isn’t mandatory, but depends what you want.

Hope Blackmagic brings out an Ursa Mini Pro with Full Frame. I would buy this instantly. The form factor is just shit for rigging on this one - so an Ursa with Full Frame would be the coolest thing.

I shoot "low light" at 400 iso with a lot of light, lol. I get the cleanest result at that ISO on this camera using enough light. The next cleanest option is 1250 ISO but you lose about a stop at this higher gain stage so I prefer to use 400 if possible. You can always up the ISO a bit in post if needed without adding too much noise.

You're doing great! Careful not to fall into the camera review rabbit hole on KZbin. Your channel is interesting and compelling BECAUSE its not another review channel. Back to the BMC, does it have the same issue with skin tones where you need to haven IR cut filter since its one of the few cameras that doesn't do this internally?

@@BlaineWestropp1 I think it’s more of an issue on exteriors when using natural light. Not sure if these new LED fixtures produce anything in that frequency but certainly worth a test. If your blacks or shadows have a red cast, you have your answer.

Been waiting for you to get your hands on this camera! Just a few questions. 1. What’re your thoughts on the high ISO performance. I’m totally fine being limited to 100-1000 ISO, but just saw that you ran it all the way up to 12800 😆. Just wanted your thoughts on how usable it was. 2. What’d you think about the rolling shutter performance for open gate? I know you do quite a bit of “rigged” stuff, so you might not have noticed much. I’ve just heard some mixed reviews on whether the gyro stabilization works well or not. Thanks as always man ✌🏻
@BlaineWestropp19 ай бұрын
I felt the high ISO values performed great, but need to test further. also need to test further regarding rolling shutter and gyro. I do know though that the smaller the sensor area you are working with, the faster the readout speed, the better the rolling shutter performance. I also find that I prefer larger sensors when on wider lenses, and stuff on wider lenses (at least the way I shoot) doesn't get too affected by rolling shutter. if I am shooting beyond 50mm I dont care what the sensor size is. so maybe something I would consider is shooting more cropped modes for handheld stuff that isn't super wide.

The image quality is very very nice. It’s a great camera all around. Walking around with a lighter weight camera, hand held, will always have a different feel than a heavier camera hand held but that’s easy to fix, by making everything heavier. I think what you get for the price of this camera is incredible. I have not done any controlled side by sides.. but.. on January 25 I will be brining this camera into the studio with a bunch of 35mm Kodak film stocks and seeing how they look next to each other.
