@MassimilianoPrelli6 ай бұрын
@@LeapingDogFilmsIf you are interested in the BMPCC OG, check out the CinePi. It's an open source camera that uses a Raspberry Pi and a sensor of your choice (the one the project is focusing on has the same size as the OG pocket). The new demos came out on CinePi's channel show it working with a dual gain sensor (one of the biggest selling points of the Fairchild sensor the BMPCC OG uses) recording a 16bit raw image. The coolest thing is that the camera is modular so one could upgrade components as time goes by. I would also advise against buying a BMPCC OG over $200 because having repaired mine I can tell you it's quite fragile and almost impossible to find parts for.

@BlaineWestropp16 ай бұрын
Hey thanks so much! I like intuitive, well designed technology! For focus, I see more mistakes with autofocus stuff than I do with manual focus stuff. I can often times see the focus hunting. Like when I film myself talking to KZbin, I don’t use auto focus. If I move forward or back, I fall out of focus slightly. I notice anyone on YT using AF, which is totally fine. For manual focus you can get good at it by just doing it a lot and messing up sometimes, or you just hire a 1st AC and they handle it. That really is the way. That being said I pull my own focus all the time. Even sometimes I have the AC disengage the focus motor so I can do it if I am operating. It all comes down to practice, knowing what you want, and choosing the right options.

In 2013 I bought the original BMPCC on sale for $499. The current sale felt like deja vu so I bought the BMCC6K. It brought a tear to my eye to see that the caveats from days of yore (no ibis, crappy low light and battery life) are still there today. Feels so familiar. Now I can free my OG Pocket from it's cage and adapter so I can use it as a pocket camera. Trying to figure out what Lumix lens to get since that 14-42 you're using has a long history of issues. Thanks for this video, I think simplicity and constraints are good and look forward to my pocket finally...ending up in my pocket.
@BlaineWestropp16 ай бұрын
this is great. glad you got the 6k. the FF right? I really dont mind the caveats.. the Alexa (my favorite camera ever) has all those same things. no ibis, fast battery drain, and no significant low light performance are all part of all the best cameras ever made in my opinion. sure it is cool to have an fx3 that can see in the dark and the battery lasts all day, but I am used to an Alexa that runs for 45 minutes and having 12 gold mount batteries that need to be moved around. I could fit 12 bmpcc batts in my other pocket! it does go back to the simplicity.. I even like when batteries dont last for a long time, sometimes. makes you more intentional. like film. so having all of those things are fine with me, and having all of them in a camera I can carry around all day is super cool. glad you got the bmpcc back in your pocket!

@@BlaineWestropp1 Yes, the FF. I look forward to not doing crop conversion since I use Contax glass. And like you, I'm not averse to carrying batteries. Excellent as always. I think you might be looking for the cine equivalent of a leica rangefinder m series, m3-6. I guess a digital braun nizo would make some sense and i have never really understood why that form factor disappeared bar for camcorders. I think the sony handycam mini dv was probably the game changer with the flip out screen. If we are interested in capturing what we see around us then it never made sense to me to have any camera that you didn’t put up to your eye to shoot. That said i used to love how reportage photographers would extend their arm and point the camera in the general direction of the action knowing the lens and focus were taken care of. For play back having a screen is nice for sure but for shooting?? I think that is where bm got confused or at least made a counter intuitive decision though it did tie in the moment of shooting with the moment of viewing as its usp. Clever from a wysiwyg dopamine pov. Maybe its the kind of decision that is made by someone who has never been a photographer and hasnt experienced the delay inherent in seeing film rushes back. I think point and shoot has always made sense and coming from using film cameras and their simplicity especially when thinking about a bolex it is easy to see how bruce webber shot lets get lost on one and got nominated for an Oscar. Btw i am surprised you are not shooting in monochrome b and w. Im sure you already have. Mank? Fellini? Woody Allen’s Manhattan? Slipping my Komodo to the achromic lut is like breathing out after holding my breath. Everything is so easy in terms of shooting and reducing the decision making down to the subject and the frame. I remember having a leica r series and for some reason shot widescreen on it always on b and w film. I think i was experimenting with panoramic set ups at the time. Just amazing. My memory is so fuzzy but i remember the contact sheets having a super wide neg frame. Always been a fan of 239. I put anamorphics on dvcams and i look at all my old footage that is framed so perfectly (?) because the cameras were so low tech and lens orientated being film or early digital that i really wish they could have some more fidelity. Upres software just doesnt work on it. Still they capture a time and place i guess. Sorry i am drifting. Thx for the post. An absolute pleasure as always.

The 3 biggest moments that got us here were the Red One that cut the price of Hollywood cameras by 2/3. The Canon 5D MKII (and subsequently T2i, 7D and Panasonic GHII) that showed what you could get out of these photo sensors and that ther was a market for prosumers that went beyond giant sensored camcorders. And the OG Blackmagic Pocket that took what Red did with revolutionizing pricing and what Canon and Panasonic were doing and put it into a beautifully small form factor.

@@steppedon man I remember the 5D and 7D days like it was yesterday. With magiclantern RAW installed it was game over. I felt powerful up until the release of the OG BMPCC, that blew my mind. Look at us now with everyone bowing down to the fx3.. we came a long way!

Hi Blaine! I really hope you have time to answer all my questions about cameras. :) I came across your video because I’m looking for a lightweight camera for a documentary project. Just to give you an idea: I have to follow a character who, as a biologist, climbs steep slopes, scales the walls of abandoned buildings, and cycles for miles-all in one day. I realized that getting a cinema camera would be a big mistake for me. I really prefer Blackmagic cameras over other brands, but I’m unsure about a couple of things: the battery life (how many LP-E6 batteries would I need to carry for a full day of filming?) and the stabilization, since I’ll always need to shoot handheld. I really like your approach to filmmaking, so I was hoping you might help me make a decision! :)
@BlaineWestropp113 күн бұрын
Hey sorry for the delay. Do you know the elevation you will be climbing? Do you really need a very light camera? Or can you shoot it with a heavier setup and have a team? If it is a one day shoot, are you renting the equipment, or are you looking to buy? If you prefer Blackmagic, I would go with that. I like Blackmagic. I will also say the fx3/30 is very light, easy to move around with, battery life is nice, and auto focus. But.. do you really need auto focus? It all depends what you want to capture, and how you want to approach capturing it. If your task was to record without cutting the entire day and you need every moment in focus, maybe an fx3. Sometimes I approach shooting things as if I had only 1000 feet of film. Planned. Precise. Controlled. Find your approach and goals, the gear decisions will follow. Happy to help further! Also, I am unsure on the battery life question you asked. Gotta do some googling for that. I’m sure the run time is out there.

I just got into filmmaking a year ago and bought myself an OG and rigged it out. For my needs, it’s perfect… Hoping to get my hands on an eclipse from Alt Cine built out of the micro. Then I will be set 🌞

@@BlaineWestropp1 I think they are just finishing the final testing phase. I don’t know when they’re going to start production. By the way Alt Cine makes an olpf filter for the OG and micro i’m just waiting for mine to arrive. For me, I’m not interested in the 6K although the price is awesome atm. Making my own films I just love the simplicity of the OG and coming from a photography I’m wedded to the Fairchild sensor, you get amazing results uprezing to 4K in daVinci resolve.

Mr. Westropp I have a Canon Gx7 Mark ii but I have a feeling there are other more appropriate cameras for a beginner in cinematography. Do you have any other recommendations other than the blackmagic? Thanks for all the info you give!
@BlaineWestropp16 ай бұрын
Hey! Anything that you can attach lenses to, and shoot log with. The newer Blackmagic full frame is a great option bc it has a large sensor, shoots log, and raw, and can basically mimic shooting on any other sensor size. You don’t need a camera that shoots raw, but log I would definitely reccomend, along with lens versatility. Sony fx3 and fx30 pretty nice too! Also people say good things about the sigma FP, but I haven’t used it.

I always trashed this camera back in the day. But you make a good argument for it. Though what you said made me think about tripods. They're very simple though a lot can be said about a tilt or pan shot. I was on a jewellery shoot recently shooting in a Komodo with Cooke lenses and a ronin 2 and when we got into the edit I was like this could have been 90% on sticks and could have been more impactful. While I also think due to time pressure we never got the ronin balanced properly due to how front and bottom heavy the rig was so the tripod could have saved us time too.
@BlaineWestropp16 ай бұрын
tripod is definitely very useful. I like how I see less tripod stuff lately. it makes me use a tripod more. I have actually been doing some whip pan stuff and it looks nice.. and feels unique bc a lot of stuff we see is on a moving camera nowadays. love a dolly of course, but the tripod is simple, and impactful like you say.
@heartshapedfilms6 ай бұрын
@@BlaineWestropp1 love a good whip pan. A few crash zooms can also be sick especially now there are so many great parfocal lenses about! Tripods are certainly the one really helps keep you grounded and makes like simple and I absolutely love dollies, I am not crazy about gimbals just as they're so over used though they certainly have a place and I think if you keep life simple use simple techniques you'll end up having a more impactful moment I'd try and leave out complications for a specific shot rather than the whole thing Also the democracy of great filmmaking gear gets a lot of people trying these shots that unless your intentional with them won't actually add and will dilute what you're trying to say. Being more economical with the shots is a better way to be
