TLDW: Crimson Desert is a VERY ambitious game coming from a very capable team. Other than the writing in some cases, it seems that the game is extremely impressive and melds some of the best parts of Zelda, Assassin’s Creed, and the Witcher. While I haven’t personally played the game, I feel that they have been extremely transparent and willing to let the public see the game at various trade shows, which is a very good sign. We will continue to keep a close eye on it, but as for right now I think it’s perfectly reasonable to be intrigued and excited for this. It would not surprise me at all if this ends up being another big hit for a relatively unknown eastern studio.

that's kind of what worries me about this game and the hype surrounding it. "VISUALS ARE AMAZING AND FEATURES OMG". I don't know, graphics look generic. The particles are literally just the default unreal-generated particles, and the graphics are more focused on looking realistic than actually having a defined art style. It looks like every other AAA game that's been released in recent years. And the features seem way too ambitious that I feel like there's no way most of these wouldn't fail in actual gameplay. Just to remind you, trailers cherry pick what works and what doesn't; even if that trailer is an hour long. Overall, just looks like a game made to hype with these hyper-realistic visuals and pretty sceneries with all the features you've come to love from all the games that came before it that would definitely require the latest gaming hardware to even run. It really does look like a light show that tries the most basic things to impress the audience, and it works. I'd be skeptical, too. Not to mention, it's made by a company that runs an MMO that claims to be a sandbox minus the sandbox.

On the monetization aspect, I think an interesting comparison might be to look at Stellar Blade and the devs (shift up). The Korean game market has been changing a lot in recent years and we might be seeing companies that were making gacha/mobile/mmorpg games (all with heavy monetization), leveraging those to have the resources necessary for higher quality "marquis" products. Products that build your reputation. This would be a great way for those devs avoid becoming stale while getting some good coverage online. Shift Up made one of the most egregious gacha title out there but they also made Stellar Blade which is definitely not aggressively monetized.

@moatazamrelrawy97652 ай бұрын
Why Microtransactions are bad? You get cool skins and weapons and you support the developers and the franchise. Also no one forces any one to buy the Microtransactions. For Example, Ac Valhalla has Microtransactions but the strongest weapons are free to be found on the map ( Varin's axe and House carl's axe) while the skins and the weapons that are payed for are niche from a gameplay perspective. Also you can buy Microtransactions in AC Valhalla with opal which is earned for completing contracts in game for free.

@@fat4eyes Bullshit. The excessive grind is there _only_ for those that look to go into PvP. BDO is very well balanced in terms of progression if you just wanna get to Ascension/Succession as a casual player. I'd know. The end-game is more grindy than most MMOs, but the "exploration" part of it is way more forgiving than most others-even western stuff like WoW. It's really only there to incentivize players to spend money after they ran out of novel content. And as Crimson Desert is a singleplayer game, they simply don't have to do that.
@hundvd_72 ай бұрын
The (former) Publisher of BDO, Kakao Games, is terrible with microtransactions and greed. But Pearl Abyss, the developer, has since acquired the full publishing rights (outside of Korea, iirc), and has made a fair few player-friendly moves since then. And Crimson Desert is also fully self-published. So BDO's greedy history should not be what we base our expectations on.

As someone that played Black Desert Online on day one and for a couple of years and now I occasionally check it out to see what's new, I have no doubts that this game is real and will look amazing when it launches. Black Desert is visually amazing, especially for an MMORPG. It was ahead in visuals by a mile when it was first released and it's only gotten better. With Crimson Desert being a single player game and not an MMORPG, I don't have the worries that I would if they were making another MMORPG. I don't have worries that this game will be grindy. Black Desert is an absolute grind fest but it's also not a single player game. I also don't have to worry about Crimson Desert being pay 2 win like Black Desert cause again, it's a single player game. The only thing we have to worry about is them releasing a completed game with a compelling story. Black Desert's storyline has been changed around quite a lot since it's release, it's gone through entire reworks of systems, questlines and such. Granted, Black Desert is an MMORPG and should be ever changing and being added to but I just hope that they don't do stuff like that to Crimson Desert, a single player game, and they're able to put out a great story (Black Desert's story can be kinda wonky and boring at times, and was especially boring at release). I do hope that they do improve the facial animations to be like those in the trailers from years ago and I'd also like them to add some variations to the sounds enemies make because I watched the whole 50min gameplay video and all of the enemies make the exact same "auugh" sound when they're hit and get thrown around. Though that being said about the facial animations.. it's still a MASSIVE upgrade from the overall animations and cutscenes that're in Black Desert.

What most people who’ve never played Black Desert Online might not know is that the game has one of the best character creation systems of all time - so much so that I initially bought the game specifically to make rpg characters for my own projects. With that in mind, it would be an absolute shame if we do not get to create our own characters in this story, using the same or even just slightly upgraded system. But so far, all I’ve seen is the same dude in all of the gameplay footage, so I’m a little worried. If you cant create a protagonist as iconic as Geralt, 2B, or Aloy (and I don’t have confidence that Pearl Abyss can), then you need to let the players create their own characters to fill in the rpg elements themselves.

I think the reason this game looks so impossible is that the devs seem to be VERY economical with their priorities. I think far too many games nowadays focus on the absolutely meaningless details. Take something simple like the belts and buckles at 15:46. Those looks so flat. But does it matter? The rest looks pretty good. The motion looks good. You probably didn't even notice. But most AAA devs would cope and seethe seeing and not "fixing" that, spending a week remodelling and making it work. You can find these kinds of "shortcuts" everywhere in the footage. But they are more like... An artist choosing not to render every single point in the painting, only the parts in focus.
@Verchiel_2 ай бұрын
In the development process that's definitely true, but things like belts seem somewhat odd to not have physics. Or, for that matter, animals when they're being carried? Just become frozen. With how much attention is paid to all the particles and the fur simulation and such, i don't really see them picking between which details to forgo. Though evidently, as you said. I didn't notice, and even if i likely did if i were playing myself, it'd probably be nothing but a nitpick.

Black Desert online is far from being the most greedy MMO. You can easily get a massive amount of free stuff that otherwise are locked in the casshshop if you play the even. They give high tier mount, outfit, item for house, XP booster (massive one like a 530%), and many other minor stuff. People have always said this for BDO because they never played it and stopped at the cash shop. Because someone is in the cash shop dont mean that you can easily get it while playing. People also ignore that BDO is one of the rare MMO that have people who only play to commerce, some focus on fishing or going after whale, and some just do their farm stuff.

Been recently working on my first playthrough of rdr2, and besides some of the gameplay issues i have with it, i don't get that feeling of "play and get lost in the world" And i think this is in large part because RDR2 like many open world games, including crimson desert or witcher 3 etc. feature too much guidance on where content is. Watched some youtube video a while back talking about how seeing map markers with highlighted "points of interest" telling you to go there to find the content, which makes the game feel less like a free to use chef's kitchen and more like a buffet. And that's a huge reason why i think games like skyrim damn near perfected it, because besides floating markers hinting at a nearby ruin or camp, exploration is entirely personal incentive. Like Luke said, "see a structure in the distance and be intrigued enough to go see what it is" kind of deal. Elden ring did that rather well too.

@@Verchiel_ How far you a long in the world? So lets take a second to realize that Luke Stephens said himself that rdr2 is one of those games you can get lost in. I happen to agree with him and that is one of my most favorite games to date. My point is that there is 99.9% chance that its one of those games because so many respected people in the video game industry have described it as just that. Just give it some time buddy. Go check it out and explore. There's soooooooo much content and interesting things that happen in the game Also a point I want to emphasize on is Luke Stephens is a great judge/ analyst of video games. Thats not really an opinion as the numbers and subscribers he has is clear evidence of that.

Seems like it, the hunting, fishing, and also how he carries the animal carcass, the horse taming. This game definitely took many ideas from RDR2. Its basically Assassins Creed meets RDR2.

Well to be fair, Stellar Blade was one of the best releases this year, but Shift Up's other game (NIKKE) is a gacha, with a lot of ways to get your wallet crying. That being said, there was no extra scummy microtransactions in Stellar Blade (even tho they could just sell ever living crap out of Eve skins). I'm really positive about Crimson Desert being just one time purchase, it would one up Capcom's dragon dogma from start, which had paid teleports and so on.

My hope is that the monetization side of things is similar to the difference between Stellar Blade and Nikke, where they understand this is a very different type of product and should have everything included in the box price

I feel like up-scaling have impacted the industry rather negatively. Some PS4 games actually look nice and run amazingly without any need of DLSS. RE4 on my PC runs at max 4K almost 100FPS and that game looks awesome fidelity wise. I just think there should be a collective cap on fidelity by the devs to determine a normalized quality level without relying too much on upscaling methods while also maintaining satisfying performance at the very least 60 FPS.

@18:50 regarding multiple quests with one answer, do you lose out on rewards if you don't talk to every npc beforehand? Might lead to people holding out and grinding npcs before doing anything. Also dialogue. Will someone say something like "thanks for doing my quest" without talking to them previously? Etc.

20:30 There seems to be a lock-on actually, you can see it in the footage you put on screen. I don't know if this is an input or if it's dynamic but the crosshair seems to be moving from target to target when the camera turns toward them and then resets when there seems to be no enemy in the center of the screen.

@@manuelrapino5917 That's not true at all. Crimson Desert uses the same engine as BDO (or rather an updated/optimized version), where every armor piece has visual degradation. (Most people turn that feature off, because they like to look shiny all the time.) And Pearl Abyss is VERY good at outfit/armor design. My guess is that Crimson Desert just isn't far enough into the "polish" phase yet to focus on those bits of visual realism.

But this past Gamescom, how confident they were in not just everything they showed off, the volume, the quality, and everyones hands on impressions. Im more than convinced this game is everything said and more. That year they took off, they must have really knuckled down and worked hard on this. It even makes me excited for the potential of DokeV

I think it's always worth considering an example like cyberpunk (which I think is a good game for the most part) where the vertical slice shown was arguably the most complex and branching questline in the base game, which set an unrealistic expectation for the rest of the game. The quest line with the bandit camp definitely sounds cool, but will they have continued that type of story telling throughout potentially hundreds of hours of gameplay?
@Fred-y3d2 ай бұрын
Cyberpunk was shown a lot before release. Same with No Man's Sky. Then there's SW Outhouse, and we can all name several "content creators" that shilled that slop after 4 hours of monotoring by Ubislop, and a trip to Disneyland.

Something I'm deathly curious about is how gear progression, levels (if there are any) and overall exploration rewards factor in. If I explore a cool cave and all I get out of it is a potion or something, I'm gonna get pissed. Also, they have been ADAMANT in letting Kliff only use a sword and a shield as his weapon. Can we use other weapons at all or are we locked to sword and board? I don't mind if we are, but the UI is super unclear about whether or not we can change our playstyle. Do we learn new moves? How's character growth gonna be like, gameplay wise? Things to consider.

I guarantee there will be a store with crazy monetization. In an early trailer, you see the protagonist playing a flute wearing a teddy bear hat! Oh there will be monetization alright from skins to instruments, weapons even skins for his crow cape. Mounts you name it. They are definitely going to do a ubisoft. Even i can see the opportunities from a corporate perspective.
