I'm new to your channel but, Love all I've watched. This is about the skunk & my dog being sprayed over n over as she held this skunk by the throat & refused to let go protecting our younger dog. Tomatoe juice only made one big mess. After trying several times, I finially found that a simple mix of dish soap, baking soda, lemon juice and I beleive it was alittle vinegar took that stinky smell out after 2 baths. And many dirty towels. Just remember if a pet gets sprayed in the face it can effect their upper respiratory & breathing. So watch closely & if worried at all contact your vet.

Around your chicken coops and other buildings you have skunk issues, you can install a anti-dig barrier, basically hardware cloth (1/2 x 1/2”) bent in a “L” shape, attach the vertical part of “L” to coop/building, the horizontal portion you put in ground just under the sod, no more then 4”. Bring the horizontal portion out 18 “. It will keep raccoon , skunks, woodchucks, ect from digging under.
@tastyhasty47472 жыл бұрын
I put the hardware cloth in the l shape like you said and I do think it is working on the critters...but now my cucumbers and tomatoes plants are getting nipped off at the tops...I guess it's the birds but haven't seen them....there has been plenty of rain..I wouldn't think they need the moisture any thoughts
@saddleridge43642 жыл бұрын
I did this with both my coops, BUT this summer I went down at dusk to lock them up and there was a raccoon in the run! I had a lamp with me and I was so surprised I just yelled 'HEY!" Whereupon he literally ran UP the FENCE and jumped over my head to get out at which point my Shepherd took off after him. They can climb like a monkey, those coons. Chooks were fine. Timing, timing, timing. ( That coop has a run that is not covered, my other coop does.)
@davidhbrooks2 жыл бұрын
@@saddleridge4364 yep it only stops them from digging under, if you want them to stop climbing attached a 3 foot anti-climb barrier along the fence at the top, sheet metal works. The other option would be to fully enclose the top as well, however do not use chicken wire for any animal proofing wiring.

I let my farm dog out this morning and she ran down a huge possum and killed it. When she brought it to me I thought at first it was a goose hangin down both sides of her mouth. I like possums, but this one had moved up near the house and was having babies. She already got the babies, now finally got the mom. Now skunks are a different matter. If coming through the place I bring in the farm dog until the skunk moves on. She did get skunked twice when younger. When I smell one I say NoSkunk to her cause she grabs first and thinks second! She keeps the rif-raf out of the place.

That is so strange about the skunks. We had chickens and a 1 acre garden. They never bothered the garden or the chickens. They were our friends. They loved the japanese beetles and larvae. They were always diggin for bugs. They are cute little critters. They would come up on the patio and scamper over our feet. We just sit real still and quiet. They were looking for food or water. They also like sunflower seeds. We learned the alert sounds they make and they also raise their tail and shake it before they spray. They never sprayed us but watched them get a dog. Poor thing. Oh well.your pears are amazing.

Skunks... they must be everywhere! We have them around here, too, though they never seem to cause much trouble. They do dig for grubs sometimes but seldom come around to areas that they are bothersome. We have barn cats so we do have to be careful about not leaving food out in places they would easily find, and never leave it out at night. Most of our encounters haven't been so bad. One such encounter was me looking around the pond and the skunk coming by to see what it was I was looking at. He never offered to spray but was very curious, as though I was going to show him where the good morsels were. Needless to say, we did not encourage the friendship but he really just never bothered us. When they become a bother, we have to deal with them but so far, I've had way more trouble with deer.

I learned to keep deer away from eating your plants is taking an empty film or prescription btl, Poke holes all around it & fill it with SHAVED IRISH SPRING BAR SOAP. Tie a string around the bottle and hand them all around where you want the animals to be on their way. Works like a charm. Learned this from the forest district.

Skunks are the least of my worries. Since June, I have trapped and relocating 16 raccoons and 9 possums. I caught one skunk. I carefully covered the trap with a tarp and opened the door with a long pole and let it go. The only problem a skunk causes is eating a chicken egg now and then or raiding the compost pile. I had one coon kill three of my meat chickens in one night. That's when I bought the trap. LOL The coons still managed to destroy about a third of my early sweet corn before they were removed. Deer and coons together took out 90% of the field corn I planted just up the road from my house. There is a lot of housing developments going up a few miles from where I live, and the wildlife is being pushed into my tiny corner of the world. It's almost unbelievable how many deer I see daily. We can only kill five deer per hunter, per year, in this area. If my son and I killed 10, it wouldn't make a dent in the population. The ten deer that I saw daily in a field last year, has turned into a group of 20 this year. A group larger than that has moved into my area as well. On an average day, I might see anywhere from 20 to 50 deer. They watch me all day long and then come visiting during the night. The only good thing is they keep the apple and pear drops cleaned up under my fruit trees. LOL
@joannc1472 жыл бұрын
Yup, those deer know exactly what time to visit….grrrr

I used to live wayyyyy out in the country of NE Oklahoma. A big commercial hog farm was exactly one mile away. We could smell it - OFTEN, and that was with the wind blowing it over a small mountain! Also, the big auger feeders would come on in the middle of the night and make all my dogs bark. They would stand and bark in the same direction - every time the augers turned on. :) Pollution comes in many forms - not just the bad air/odor of a skunk or hog manure, but also noise pollution! And many hog farmers there also had hay fields, so they could spray the hog manure on them and make money from the fertilized hay. And they had to take courses on how to NOT pollute a watershed area.

Make all you can this year. I mean wear yourself out. You never know what next year holds. Last year and the year before we had so many pears that I canned so many jars of Pear preserves or some call it Pear Butter that I have enough to last for YEARS. It's a good thing I did that. This year...not ONE pear. However, now I'm learning fig preserves. We have 3 fig trees. 2 are only 3 years old. The older one has gotten huge. This is the first year all three are competing with each other on production. I have a LOT of figs for the first time. So grateful. I thank the Most High that he gives me some breaks now and then. No way I could have done a banner year of both fruits with all the other things I have to do and can.

Time to re-task that old pole as a "cane pole" for fishing in the pond with the grand-kids! That new extend-a-pole looks like it's doing the job and those pears are beautiful. Danny, I've got 2 questions. How are the Raz-a-ma-taz "grapes" doing? And do you have "barn cats"? If not they might help keep the critters away from the buildings. Most communities have "free" barn cats that are spayed or neutered and will even deliver to farms. If you have a local market bulletin paper, look for them in there. And yes, those are some nice large turkeys.

We inherited two of those picking baskets more than 20 years ago. They are still usable, but the rubber coating is finally coming off. Ours are on a wooden stick. One is longer than the other. We are getting ready to buy replacements and I love that extending stick you have. It is annoying when you get caught up in the little branches and twigs, but it still works well. We use a ladder and climb into the tree, but this tool allows us to reach more fruit safely. The padding is real handy for softer fruit like ripe peaches and ripe persimmons. We use a rag in the bottom of the basket. I love your cool room.

I'm the weirdo who loves skunks. I never thought I would until I had to battle the fig eater beetles. The beetle larvae will take out a whole fruit tree. The skunks go out nightly and dig up/eat the grubs. And baby skunks are the cutest thing ever. To not get sprayed, we announce ourselves. We can't have chickens without attracting rattlesnakes, so skunks are the next best thing. I know animals are different everywhere but ours want to avoid us as much as we want to avoid them. The only bad part is in breeding season, when there is competition, there is a lot of spraying. I'm not a fan of that at all. But that lasts a short while.
