In the swedish version of this story they don't try to marry of princesses with the lindworm, but women who were criminals. Prince lindworm does not eat them either but his skin is razor sharp so he accidentally kills them when he tries to hold them. Also where this story ends, the swedish one continues! The heroine gets to fight the minions of the devil himself!

I find fairy tales much more enjoyable, when the roles are revesed like this. Where instead of the prince saving the princess, the princess actually ends up saving the prince. I guess it's because the damsel in distress types of stories get pretty old after a while, and it kinda gave off the vibes that a lady needed a man to save her in order for her to live happily ever after.

I've heard another version of the story were instead of the old lady telling the Queen to eat roses she gives her two onions to peel to the core and eat them. If you ask me it makes the ending seem more appropriate with onions but I like roses and they are in fact edible.

I imagine the Lindworm has no control over his appetite, and no memory of his devouring the others. I.E. he's not at fault for their death's, it's the curse that befell him.

So, those other two girls are just dead now? and because the prince is handsome now, we're just ignoring the fact that he ate them?

Idk but maybe his physically transformation, also changed his behavior as well. Maybe because he was born a serpant, he naturally lived like one as well. And only when he turned into a human, could he naturally live like one as well. Idk but that's my best guess.

In Italy we have a story with a similar mechanics: the bride has to wear seven gowns embroided with bells, so that when the evil mother in law asks her to "shed a shift" in order to BOIL HER AND SERVE HER MEAT TO THE PRINCE (as you can see, in Italy is always about food), the bells could ring and warn the prince something is wrong.

It would have been a really cool twist (maybe if they made a remake of this they could do it.) if the lindworm actually ended up being a princess. I feel like if they were to do this it could be pulled off by making it very hard to determine the sex of a lindworm (similar to hyenas, penguins, etc) and have the voice of the lindworm be deeper, forcing the King to assume they were male, when in fact they were female. And by the time the kingdom found out it was already too late seeing as the princess's had married the night before. (Also, make it so the lindworm/princess is a lesbian which is why she requested for a bride instead of groom. And have the shepherd's daughter be pansexual, that way when she did find out she had married a princess instead of a prince it wouldn't have bothered her either way.) Okay actual considering rewriting it this way, obviously still giving credit to the original.

Ngl I genuinely thought that would happen because the mother ate the white flower first, like mom would "still get what she initially wanted", but eating the second rose corrupted that choice

Three things, one Why was the lindworm a boy, wouldn't be a girl for it was eating both of the roses that caused this and the other was also a boy? two, how did the lindworm know what road they would go on, and how did he get there so fast? Three, do not put citrus in tea with milk!!! You will just make tea yeast Have a good night or day my dears

My issue with this story is that the real evil is not the serpent. It’s the queen who made a stupid mistake and then expected three innocent women to pay for it, and the king who helped her by actually forcing and tricking those women. It’s like, no number of women could be as important as his youngest son. And then they got a happy ending, while those poor princesses died in this awful grizzly way. And the younger prince was also encouraging his parents. He didn’t deserve a bride in the end. The victims were the present girl and the serpent, who was obviously under a curse, and was freed by someone actually trying solve the problem instead of just forcing more and more women to be killed. What if it hadn’t stopped at 3? Would they have just kept going forever? They never actually tried any other way of stopping the serpent. They never tried to kill it, or just distract it so it would not bother the younger prince. Just the height of selfishness and entitlement. I hope the serpent prince and the peasant leave and start a new life on their own away from their narcissistic family.

In many European cultures (picking the rose/eating the rose) was slang for doin the "deed" so that might be the reason for all the baby roses Also my mother told me a similar story except that the snake died and turned into a rose and the princess ran off with the brother

I remember this story, though the last time I read it was in a more "in detail" fairy tale compilation. This story was largely told as you did just now, but the others? If that book had been a game it would have gotten M or maybe an AO rating for some of the stories, as a few were rewritten.
