Subwoofers are specially made and designed for low frequencies. As much as u harden the cone or replace with a subwoofer cone with hard spider, ultimately it will be a high rage speaker, as the magnet is same. It won't be a subwoofer coz it won't produce any frequency below 30 hz.

It's easier to build a subwoofer than a speaker, because low frequencies are easier to produce than high frequencies, and for below 30hz frequencies which songs are made below 30hz? Even for a 12inch sub it's difficult to produce that low frequencies, and you can't even hear it, it's only vibration, most songs are made with over 40-45hz frequencies, and you can easily convert a speaker to sub but you can't do it the other way, you need a 4 or more layer voice coil and a harder cone and a strong spider, but your only limitation is the dept of the magnet, you probably can't give to much push on wattage but it will work as a subwoofer.
