slowly starting to agree, this is getting me through the disspation/implosion of my "pink clouds"... shit's rough but I find Mr.Looker's thoughts incredibly soothing, and a positive force for good on this God-forsaken corner of the internet.

Great story thanks for sharing man. the transformational power of monotony and duration is very fascinating to me. an example that always comes to mind is when a friend and I (both heavy strategy boardgamers) decided to play rock paper scissors once every day for a month and tally the score at the end. The duration alone turned a meaningless roll of the dice into a rich and vast meta landscape of decisions, deceptions & incentives. Duration really does reveal unique depths!

very cool homage to your boy and to the story. people don’t know about rituals like those. playing shit repetitively for time. unrelated formative stories (you’re included) 1) Paul Lai letting me into the bar to watch Upsilon the night before i left for CalArts summer camp coincidentally 2) Charlie looker requesting the bar be closed for ‘private party’ so the kids (us) sitting on their volvo outside the open door could see the Extra Life set love you

The are the kind of musical stories I like: fun, organic, rough around the edges, endearing and groovy. I would honestly rather be reading stories like these in composer and performer biographies on programme notes than "x person went to x school and studied x teacher and one x prize in x competition". It certainly helps that you have a kaleidoscope of musical experiences: jazz, hardcore, medieval, metal, chamber and experimental shit.

Charlie, what you experienced is called a trance. This is a kind of altered state of consciousness, comparable to doing mushrooms, or speaking in tongues in southern Christian denominations. It's strange that you post this today, because this morning I induced my first trance-like experience by smoking some pot and moving rhythmically to Pharaohs Dance from Bitches Brew (Miles Davis, for those who may be unfamiliar). Musical Flow is a sort of trance. These experiences are associated with alpha brainwaves. I haven't had a trance experience inform my playing yet, but I'm considering trying this with my drummer friend in the near future. Godspeed.

So if you wanted to put a label on this formative experience, you could call it an intense trance lol.

I really enjoyed listening to this story. It's very cool to get a window into a time and place that's far removed from my experience. I gotta try that riff, I need the mystical magic!

Hm... this was a great listen, thanks for sharing. Man, do you know of Emil Amos? The last few minutes of this video REALLY remind me of his podcast, Drifter's Sympathy. Actually i would love if you guys somehow crossed over in an interview or something- despite that you guys exist in somewhat separate musical realms, i think you share a lot of common ground. Cheers man.
