Happy Friday! No dischidia (yet) but yay to the orchid! Been stalking them as of late. I have a feeling a lot of us Hoya people are about to embark down the orchid rabbit hole as well. 🫣 Cheers! 🍻
@PlantedInRI7 күн бұрын
I think if you can grow a Hoya, you can grow an orchid; and actually I think Orchids are easy. Added plus, once you get orchids to grow and rebloom, all your friends will give you the orchids they get as gifts. That's how I ended up with almost half of mine. Thanks for watching and adding your comment.

I started with large leaved Hoyas some years ago, but in the last year, I'm loving the small leaved varieties. I'm going to have to add another plant stand soon! When I buy them, I seem to forget that they GROW! I don't purchase in cold weather... it's been in the 20s at night and not much better in the day lately. 😢
@PlantedInRI6 күн бұрын
I, too, sometimes forget that if you do well, they grow; and that cute little plant is now huge with massive leaves. I should probably slow down my purchases during the winter, but I've found a few sellers that do really well with shipping during the cold, so... Thanks fro watching and adding your comment.

Love, love, love Hoya Treasures! I've purchased quite a few plants from her but my best buy was my Hoya Mathilde Inner Variegated. It was pricey but SO much more affordable than anywhere else! I asked her and Rebecca’s substrate is: 8 parts PON or Pumice 5 parts orchid bark 2 parts fine Coco Coir I used her recipe to make my own: 8 parts PON sometimes I'll sub some #3 Perlite if my PON is getting precious. 5 parts Orchiata 2 parts TFF 1 part Charcoal I like this recipe as its a good balance of inorganic and organic materials and it holds moisture well yet provides good drainage and aeration. I've found the engleriana easy to prop so if you change your mind and decide you need a full trailing pot you can prop it yourself relatively quickly. IM-08 is beautiful but finicky. I've killed a couple. 😢 my latest is happily growing but there was a steep learning curve on this one for me. And I don't have dischidia - I've killed ruscifolia variegated twice as well as oiantha variegated and ovata. They hate me! A local shop might have the Dragon Jade and I’ll try it if they do but I'm probably dooming the poor plant. I can grow Hoya well but the cousin is a menace. 😊
@PlantedInRI7 күн бұрын
Hmmm... The recipes are interesting. I've been steering away from coco coir in my airy mixes in favor of tree fern. In my really airy mix the coir seemed to settle to the bottom, or wash out, because it is so fine, where the tree fern stayed put. Good to know that about the H engleriana, and the IM-08, at least I won't feel so bad abut the first one. Thanks for watching and sharing your information.
@carolinebaines87357 күн бұрын
@ that's one of the reasons I switched “my” recipe to TFF.

No dischidia *yet...Love the orchid! I have a dendrobium that I've had for nearly 20 years and an oncidium (Metassia Golden Spider) that is nearly as old and has been split and gifted countless times. I currently have 7 babies all starting new bulbs in preparation for spring flowers. Anyone in eastern Ontario looking for an oncidium, send me a comment! I also do very well with succulents and am okay with aroids but I don't find them as interesting to be honest. Thanks for another fun plant tour! 😊
@PlantedInRI6 күн бұрын
You're welcome, Leslie. Glad you enjoyed it. It's surprising how long some orchids can carry on. I, too, have some that have been here over a decade - perhaps because they can handle a little neglect. Good for you with Succulents, and I agree about Aroids. Thanks for watching and adding your comment.

I grow lots of plants, but no epiphitic orchids- at least until a friend gave me this Zygopetalum. I thought it was ‘Red Beauty’, but now I think it might be ‘Red Bird’. Whichever it is, I find it extremely easy ( for an orchid) to grow and flower. I would definitely recommend it for anyone’s first attempt at epiphitic orchids, it will allay your fears
@PlantedInRIКүн бұрын
I always assumed that epiphytic orchids would be difficult and demanding until, like you, someone gave me one almost thirty years ago. Sure, you may several have months where it's just green leaves, but then it blooms and all is forgiven. Thanks for watching and sharing your story.

Ooh love the dischidia nummularia, hoya Papua and dragon jade are so unique! I googled the photos and seeing the mature plants definitely made me add them to my wish list! A good segway from their cousin hoya. I have one dischidia, the million heart. Very cute, teeny white flowers. Me and orchids don't get along. My last orchid phaleanopsis bloomed beautifully outdoors but now it's just a dried stick! Thanks for sharing as usual! Dee, NY
@PlantedInRI6 күн бұрын
Sorry to add to your wish list. No, not really. When your orchid is done blooming, and the bloom spike has become a dried stick, cut the spike off close to the plant. It'll put out a new spike for the next blooming cycle. Orchids are as easy as Hoyas, which for me is a problem, since they're readily available. Thanks, Dee, for watching and adding your comment.

I have a monstera deliciosa. It’s kind of my accidental monstera. It was about 10 inches tall and it just let growing so I let it, up potted it when required. Finally had to give I and put it on a moss pole. Then I had to straighten it out and add a new extension pole. That was a two man job and my roommate helped me. It looks so much better. Had to up pot it. Roots were coming out the bottom. And circling around inside. But despite me never wanting any plant that needed a pole, there it is, almost as tall as me. I’m 4’11”. It’s above my shoulders.
@PlantedInRI7 күн бұрын
I'm a little jealous of your M deliciosa. I've tried several times, but I just can't seems to make them happy. I'm sure it's something to do with watering - it always is - but I haven't cracked that code yet. Yet I'm still trying, there's currently one in the living room and a "Thai Constellation" in the den and they're still alive - fingers crossed.

Did you say more orchids are on the way? Definitely want to encourage this rogue behavior 😆 I'm not a Dischidia collector yet, though I was gifted the super common ovata. No less pretty for its easy availability though. Cheers from Iowa City
@PlantedInRI7 күн бұрын
Yes, more orchids were on the way, but they're here now. I could blame you, but I'm the one that clicked the "place your order" button. They're from your friends at Orchids by Hausmann. D ovata is the ideal gateway Dischidia, for both those reasons: it's readily available, and really, really pretty. Thanks for watching.

No on dischidia, just haven’t had the urge to buy one, yet….and orchids (total fail for me). I do have engleriana. It grew like a weed. A pest got to it and munched it to a stub. Fortunately, I took a cutting before the pest issue, and once again, it is growing like a weed. I let mine trail, but am intrigued with the thought of a trellis.
@Lady_Philosophy7 күн бұрын
To answer your question, no, I still haven't gotten a dischidia. But I have room full of Hoya and just getting into orchids. I find I also get along well with epiphytes. They makes sense to me. My Aeschynanthus, Tillansia, jungle cacti, African violets. They all pretty happy but still no dischidia. Maybe I feel like I'm cheating on Hoyas by getting one. Anyways your new plants are super cute and that orchid is to die for! I'm not mad that there were only 2 Hoya, as long as it's about epiphytes I can get into it. The aroid channels are losing my interest. But I looooove orchids as well as hoya. But I'm overwhelmed with all the names and types. At least Hoya have sections and it's not that complicated but how on earth does one learn orchids? All tips welcome. Thaks again!
@PlantedInRI6 күн бұрын
I like the "they make sense to me" line. That's how I feel. Your collection sound a lot like mine - except for the Tillandsia - I love 'em, but they crisp up too quickly during the winter here. I haven't figured out Orchid names yet either. Thanks for watching and sharing your collection.

My Zygo gets some fertilizer with each watering; and it seems that if I miss a watering or two, and then get back on the schedule, it's some sort of signal to bloom. I'm still figuring out what triggers the blooms. Thanks for watching and good luck with yours.

I only have one dischidia & I can’t remember what one it is 🫣 I bought two types on an online auction like eBay but we call it trademe in New Zealand. One variety died but the other one is doing fine. We have hardly any dischidia in NZ so I’m sure it will be a common one - it has white edging?? I have ordered a handheld printer which should arrive this week so new plants will be properly labeled in future 😬😬 Always enjoy your videos. Many thanks 🍸🍸☕️

When you put spagnam in your mix do you chop it up?
@PlantedInRI7 күн бұрын
If the individual pieces are particularly long I may break them in half. Even though I'm adding sphag for some moisture retention, I still want to keep the mix "airy"; fine pieces can "pack" a bit much. Thanks for watching and asking.
@lisaanglim95888 күн бұрын
Just curious Rod, how long after you get new plants do you bring them out to show us?
@PlantedInRI7 күн бұрын
It varies. For a "haul video" it's the plants that have arrived in the previous month, so sometimes it has been a couple of weeks, sometimes it's been just a couple of days.

I'm not sure that we see many Dischidia here in New Zealand, it's bad enough that there are so many hoya without adding another species.
