GVM has always put out a pile of high value lights, but has struggled to compete in the "pro" market (whatever Pro means...). But now with their new Pro lineup, they're really punching above their weight class. We'll take a very close look at the new SD300B and see how it stacks up, and how it Holds up.

How do you think it compares to the Tolifo 350W you just revied 3 months ago? Is it worth paying little bit more for the GVM? Seems light quality is little bit better on the Tolifo...

Regarding the power brick, I have the 200B Pro but its power brick has a v-mount on the back which I can attach to the light yoke. I didn't understand why the 300B Pro version doesn't have it.

I was just about to buy but thanks for pointing out the connector and voltage isn't standard, I was think to diy a cable for it so it runs off battery but looks like I can't.

Not unless you can find a matching end. I’ll see if there is a random nema standard for it at home. At least the connector appears to be serviceable so it maybe be possible. It’s quite high voltage for battery use, though.

Okay, I found the connector on Aliexpress. You can order them for just a few dollars. The colorway is called '3 pin plug', but I don't think I can link the exact right one here: www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002482312780.html

Not sure how easily you're gonna come up with a 60V 5A battery setup, though 🤔

Kind of a weird question, but would you recommend using something like this for long periods of time as just a main light for a room? I am a (hobbyist) photographer, but my day job is as a software engineer. I work from home alot, and I spend a lot of time on video calls. My current home office has really high ceilings, about 15 feet, which is nice, but the only light in the room is some really harsh, really warm track lighting. It's an apartment so I can't really replace it, so I am looking for a solution I could use instead. Some kind of a system where I can have maybe two or three lights placed around the room that will create enough light that I wouldn't need to use the overhead lights at all. Also something with a high CRI, adjustable temperature, and dimmable, since I do edit photos in here. I'm looking at different options, some of the smart bulb systems (something like Govee), all that, but I think something like this GVM is my best bet in terms of pure light output power. I'd probably have to get a dozen smart bulbs to get about the same. But I am worried that this is not the kind of thing that you're just supposed to leave on for 8-12 hours a day, given how hot it can get and everything. Also, right now you can get this for ~ $290 on Amazon, and the SD300D for as low as $220 on Amazon

Actually on a dark or rainy day I do exactly this. It’s kind of amazing that way, and I’m rather convinced the human eye/brain is capable of subconsciously recognizing the difference between high and low cri light in ambiance like this. Sometimes I’ll bounce it off the ceiling, sometimes off the white curtain of the window so it feels like there’s light coming in. It’s so much better for mood and productivity than living in the dark, and especially as someone who struggles with seasonal affective disorder all winter.

(I just wouldn’t recommend running it at 100% for extended periods. In theory should be fine, but in practice better to go around 50%, which is plenty bright anyway)

@@WesPerry Oh wow thanks for the quick answer. Do you think there'd be a noticeable difference between the 300D and the 300B for something like this? I was also thinking that it would be nice that this could be something that could serve double duty if I did want to use it for actual photography.

Seems like the mount is really wobbly, or is that just the stand you were using?
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 7 ай бұрын
I don’t usually tighten my video lights on the stands unless I have some real reason to do so, as I’m always setting up and tearing down so often. Just a waste of time for me. If you tighten the knob it’s perfectly fine 👍🏻
