Over the last few years audiobooks have become an important part of the media landscape, and with that the Quilty of them has improved greatly to what they were in the 90’s and early 2000’s. But A song of Ice and fire has an audio book problem the publishers are going to have to address should the winds of winter ever come out. They are dated and when compared to modern productions, and full of errors and incositancey that can make it very hard for a listener to follow the story. In this video I take a deep dive into the world of ice and fire audios and talk about how the publishers can make them even better.

The Dance Of The Dragons will be the focus of the plot of the new HBO spin-off House Of The Dragon coming in 2022. So if you want to learn the story before we see HBO's take on it then this will be a very long-running series. Game Of Thrones / House of the dragon are HBO shows based on George R R Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire series. The information in this video comes from the books a world of ice and fire as well as fire and blood.

this was meant to be a different video today over an hour long but due to some technical issue i had to upload something different. I am aware of the flashframe at the start of the video and have edited it out in youtube editor but it is still processing. Also Comments have been acting up all week and not showing in youtube studio, but the issue seems to be fixed so i will be catching up with comments tomorrow. Head's up to members there is a video going live tomorrow which is a bit expanded upon this topic so keep an eye out for that.

Having Harry Lloyd do narrative is great. I always like the narrative the actors did for some of time period storylines with illustrations to go along with it.

He along with Iain Glenn, are amazing. They should honestly redo the mainline books, because the current reader, although great, reads like a Maester, who is compiling the events of the story, and it's dry.

I dont listen to any asoiaf audiobooks anymore. The only version i listen to is the readings done by Davidreadsasoiaf here on YT. He really did an incredible job with memorable voices and he performs all the music in the books. Its obviously not a professional production, his cat is often heard in the background, but that is juat part of its charm. Its like listening to someone sitting in front of the fire telling a story. I hope hes still wanting to do Winds, i think he was expecting it to be out before he finished recording. XD

I love Roy Dotrice, but that damn "crone voice" that he uses for Arya in AFFC is the bane of my existence. His voice for Arya was perfect before- childlike without being cringey or over the top. I have no earthly idea why they changed it.

I still remember the ASOIAF series recorded by Melissa something, she was Austrian I believe and had a gorgeous accent. It was around 10 yrs ago I think. Steven Pacey will play Gunthor Darklyn in HotD, he also narrates the First Law series by Joe Abercrombie, which is one of my favorite audiobook performances. But Harry Lloyd would be the best choice. He did amazingly on the Dunk & Egg novellas and everyone is familiar with his voice. He's the man for the job.

David Reads ASOIAF is absolutely top notch for an ASOIAF audio book, all the more because it is an amateur fan project with zero resources. And whoever is bothered by his cat Claudio sometimes being heard in the background can be sent to the Wall for all I care.

My first Asoiaf audiobook was Fire and Blood, and Simon Vance does an incredible job as the narrator, in my opinion. I also enjoy the Roy Dotrice productions, though they are of a noticeable lower quality, which didn't bother me as much since I was aware they were older productions.

I had no major problems with the audiobooks of ASOIAF. Also, I listened to some of"the wheel of time" audiobooks narrated by Rosamund Pike, and she is so good that it's not even funny.

I’d love to see more than 1 narrator, perhaps a man and a woman, since there are so many characters and POVs, but, GRRM mentioned in an interview that if there are multiple voice actors, each performing the dialogue, it may cease to be an audiobook and become a radio play and that poses copyright licensee issues. I expect the book publisher, Bantam, has the license to make books and audio books, but another licensee holds a license to make a radio play (perhaps HBO?).
@WorldOfWesteros
@WorldOfWesteros Ай бұрын
It is a tricky position in terms of copyright, but i do think the idea of having a male and female narrator for specific Point Of View characters makes a bit of sense. But then you'd run into the issue where you have say sansa appearing in a Ned and Arya chapter and sounding completely different based on the POV narrator. You could have each narrator voice all the male / female characters but as you mentioned your getting a bit close to radio play territory
@laurashortill8623

Yes, on reflection, in my heart, I really want a radio play. Different actors voicing different parts for the whole ASOIAF, plus awesome sound effects and music.

I get and understand your liking of the narrator who passed. I have no real grounds for his acting. However, just as much as its on production and producers, the narrator is also on the hook, as they should take care to actually get into the book. There are some amazing narrators who have read crao books, qnd vide versa. But the blame i believe, is equal on all parties.

I heard Audible are kinda doing that with Harry Potter, not necessarily the actors from the film but a full cast of actors. Would love to see something like that with asoiaf but given the sheer size of the books, would be a huge task, so maybe A.I in a few years could be the way to go about it

I have a difficult relationship with audiobooks in general. I can only listen to them while doing other stuff, but only simple tasks, like chores or walking. And I generally don't spend that long on anything. The only audiobooks that stuck with me are 2 of Jane Austen read by Karen Savage and available in full, for free on here. She reads S&S and P&P so well that I was looking for stuff to occupy my hands with just so I can keep listening.

I've always been a big fan of audiobooks since I was a child. I am very severely dyslexic and so reading has always been a challenge especially with longer books. Now that I am older and have quite a demanding job reading has become even more difficult so audiobooks help a lot filling that gap. A good narrator makes or breaks an audiobook. I've been really wanting to get into Houner Harrington series and got the first book on audible and I had to give up after several chapters because no shame on the narrator but they had quite a dull voice which wasn't helped by the periods of talking about technical science fiction jargon. I will admit I have been partially spoiled by the do audiobooks as well with the large cast of several actors and music and sound effects. It really shows you the difference in quality that is seen between audiobooks and it makes the issues with the a Song of ice and Fire one more glaring. Again I fully agree that it's a problem with direction and not the one reading it but I've been listening to the fandom reading instead because I honestly prefer it

Well the BEST Audio Drama’s/AudioBooks I’ve listened to are BY FAR The Alien Audio Drama’s. I was not even an Alien fan prior to hearing those and i have now read EVERY single alien book released and heard every available audio book on audible for Alien, AvP, & Predator. Even the normal audiobooks for the Alien , AvP, and Predator series are great.. BUT specifically the Alien Audio Drama’s are very good. Im not just saying this from no experience either as ive read and listened to a Shit Ton of Star Wars , all Hunger Games, all ASOIF, Witcher, and All Avatar (ATLA) books… along with a alarming amount of fan fiction for each 😂. And The fan fiction audio dramas for Alien are bad ass too even on youtube !! And since im ranting also Cristian Blanco i think is the youtuber in my opinion that has some of the best fan fiction content ever, and all on KZbin. Its the tales of the hunger games but fan fiction but its super interesting and easy to get lost in 😅.. in a good way.

Oh THANK YOU. No disrespect to Mr. Dotrice, I love his voice in general but listening to AFFC and ADWD is painful. The changing accents and bizarre name pronunciations! He calls Brienne, a conventional name with a conventional spelling, “Brain.” Petyr Baelish is “Pit- tire.” These are things I would actually support being corrected with AI.
