I'm a bread and butter kind of guy. My favorites were Jon, Tyrion, Arya, Davos, Jaime and Brienne. In that gigantic cast, I'm certain I forgot one or two, but those are the main ones. The Old Bear has what I consider the best line about leadership in fantasy - it comes from the series, I'm sorry to say. When Jon was underperforming north of the Wall, theBear shoved him into wall and asked point blank: "do you want to lead?". Jon, abashedly, nodded (good acting from Kit Harrington), to which Mormont answered: "then learn to follow". Some things - spoilers: In DoD, Melisandre gets frustrated because everytime she looked int othe flames for the Prince that Was Promised, she saw Jon Snow instead of Stanis. She couldn't understand why. Well, nobody ever accused her of being smart. In the books, when Jaime took Riverrun, the Blackfish tried to escape swimming, and I believe he was reported killed by archers. I don't believe it for a second.

From the Lannisters: I think his name was Devan Lannister. He was a cousin of the main branch and was a leader in the siege of Riverrun (not the one that was lifted by Robb but the Second Siege that succeeded because of Jaime). He is a minor character and we saw him only 2 times I think but he seems like a nice and funny jokster (as nice as a nobleman can get that is). I also think he is quite capable but couldn't deal with the Freys as well as Jaime because well he is just a minor nobleman and maybe didn't want to offend his allies while Jaime can do so with less fear of consequences

A Song of Ice and Fire character opinions. Get comfy, I have a lot to unpack here, this is going to take a while. George R.R. Martin: I have this really, seriously scary villain, Euron Greyjoy. His ship is called Silence and his crew is mute because he cuts their tongues out. He has an eyepatch over one eye, and his other eye is bright blue and called his "smiling eye." He has blueish lips from drinking Shade of the Evening and tripping like the House of the Undying priests, he sacrifices priests on the prow of his ship, he's sailed to Valyria and made it back, he has an entire suit of Valyrian steel armor, and A FREAKING DRAGON HORN- Dan & Dave (Dumb & Dumber): Uh-huh, Dollar Tree Jack Sparrow with cheezy, idiotic one-liners, got it! Bronn is also a much more vile character in the books than he was on TV. What happened with Bronn, Sandor and Podrick Payne is that they became fan favorites, so what Dan & Dave did was to soften up their characters and make them less reprehensible characters, then add in many scenes of filler material for them on the show, or in Pod's case just add tons more material than there was in the books. Since Sandor is only 26/27 in the books and not 50 like he was on the show, his relationship with Sansa is way different. They couldn't put in the (flat out creepy by our modern day American standards) slightly suggestive things he says to her, or the scene during the Blackwater battle where he drunkenly offers to get her out and holds a knife to her throat before leaving, because of Sophie Turner's age at the time and the fact that he was so beloved. Then there's Bronn, who ended up married to Lollys Stokeworth, Lady Stokeworth's lackwit daughter who was raped half a dozen times and pregnant with the bastard he named after Tyrion. And it's been strongly hinted that he plans on doing away with Lollys after she gives him a legit heir so he gets the titles, castle and inheritance without the pesky halfwit wife. But no, can't have a fan favorite doing those kind of things, so we'll just add tons of extra filler Bronn scenes and humourous dialogue. LOL, Bronn is so funny, amiright? They completely invented the character if "Pid the Rod" for the show, because if I recall correctly, Pod is 15/16? in the books, and his defining characteristics are quiet, shy, stutters, and smart. Otherwise, blank canvas and LOL whores and the millionth dick/lack of dick jokes arr the funniest, amiright?! My favorite characters that I have only ever heard about in stories from other characters and haven't actually been on screen: Arthur and Ashara Dayne and Howland Reed. There are enough mysteries and theories about these characters to fill an entire spinoff trilogy. George: Hey, you guys like hearing about Arthur Dayne, Sword of the Morning? Well you're going to absolutely LOVE this guy, Gerold Dayne, his cousin or something. But nobody calls him Gerold, they call him Darkstar because he is of the night. He's like the anti-Sword of the Morning, the ASOIAF Sephiroth, if you will. Pretty cool, huh? Me: No, George, I do not like your edgelord pretty boy. He's so dark and edgy, he took the ear off a 10 year old little girl. Such a badass. Also, nine years later I'm still wondering, are we supposed to take his character seriously, or what? My character I wanted to succeed was, is and always will be The Hound. Sandor is not a good person by any stretch, but there's something about him pointing out the hypocrisy of knights who are sworn to defend the weak and defenseless, but someone like Gregor gets knighted by Rhaegar Targaryan himself. Sandor upholds the ideals of knighthood much better than many of the scummy so-called knights, in his own crass, rude, brutally honest asshole kind of way. And it's so cliche, but the fact that his bitterness, anger issues and unhappiness stem from that one incident from childhood where Gregor scarred him for just wanting to play with a toy. A toy knight. Ugh, my heart just broke during that part of the story and I just wanted to reach into the book and give him a hug so badly. I want him to become a better person, because he was one of the only people in Kings Landing who treated Sansa with any kindness during her captivity until the Tyrells show up. And no, he's not very nice to her on the surface, but he doesn't know how to express his feelings and has the emotional intelligence of a 4th grade boy, so he acts like a 4th grade boy throwing pinecones at his crush because he doesn't know how to or can't express "I care about you, and I don't want to see you beaten or killed." I hope he finds some peace and works through his issues digging graves on the Quiet Isle. I want him to show up and do something really knightly to save Sansa, so she can finally connect the dots together and finally acknowledges out loud that how a person looks on the outside has nothing to do with how a person is on the inside, and that the truest knight was never a knight in the first place. My theory is she's the ultimate big bad of the series. A chekhov's gun that's been slowly building in the background. George has said he's not a fan of chosen one tropes and likes to subvert them. Ah, Jaime focking Lannister. Yes, Jaime, wonderful character. I love the guy, because not only that he has(currently) amazing arc, the biggest shock for me was that when his hand was chopped off i caught myself on the thought that i feel sorry for him, even though previously i didn't even like him. It was so subtle with later scene in a bath that just catapulted him into the top of my character list. And i have to say, Nikolaj Coster Waldau did such a fantastic job portraying the character. Oh boy i felt it when he looked at Bran in the s.8 for the first time. Yes, season sucks, but damn there were good moments.

Jamie is definitely my favorite, but I'm probably one of the few who really liked Quentyn. Just for how much of a classical fantasy hero thrown into Martin's world he is. Or, more likely, how much of an absolutely avarage men thrown into a hero's arc he is and how he learns that he's not the main hero of a sng about knights and princesses. Oh, and Barristan Selmy, in the books he's a really great character. And I still kinda hope that it will all end with him becoming Queenslayer when Daenerys goes mad (which has been my theory back when the show was at fourth or fifth season).

We don’t know what the blackfish is up to but he will probably in the TWOW prologue and he will probably rescue Robbs wife jeyne westerling from the lannisters as it’s confirmed that she will appear in the prologue and Varys just says he serves the realm, he just wants Faegon being on the throne

As my favourite fantasy series I just can't list all my favourites -too many! However my favourite quote is definitely Cersei in 'A Clash of Kings' at the end of one of Sansa's chapters: "Love is poison. A sweet poison, yes, but it will kill you all the same." -Cersei Lannister -GRRM

Dunk, as far as we know, died saving people in the fire of Summerhall. "Why?" he asked Pate. "What am I to them?" "A knight who remembered his vows," the smith said. gives me shivers every time.

Stannis the absolute Mannis. He is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. The middle child who never had any aspirations to be king. Lost his parents, unloved by his brothers, grew up to be dutiful, cold, just, and a natural tactician. I hope more than anything that his ending is worthy of his character and not that garbage they did to him on the show. He's not only the the rightful king to the Iron Throne, but he is also the most qualified. There are a ton of great characters in the series but the Mannis is my favorite. To top it off he doesn't have a single pov chapter, and yet he is one of the most loved characters.

Anyone got love for Barristan the Bold? He always seemed the companion piece to Ned - not the antithesis - as in he was just as honorable as Ned (plus the love-life connection), but where as Ned's honor was seen as a problem, Barristan was always seen as an asset. It was just luck that decided who was used how.

Barristan is a boss. Even GRRM said in his prime he could have beaten Arhtur Dayne (if he wasn't using Dawn).

I thought Olenna was confirmed by Littlefinger with Sansa's hairnet? My favourites are probably terribly controversial, but Bran, Arya, and I really want to see how Lady Stoneheart is going to play out, especially considering the Beric Dondarrian situation....

In my memory that would suggested, but never really confessed. So I still count it as hearsay. Just like anything that comes out of the mouth of Littlefinger.

So it's been so long that I have read these books that I kind of forget some plot elements. So I started watching this series on KZbin called Valar Rereadis. It breaks the books down chapter by chapter or just a full book review and it makes me so happy that I don't have to neglect other books to go back and reread this. Check it out and see if you like it

I agree! I am really invested in his arc and his early chapter have so much symbolism and foreshadowing and it would actually make sense if he becomes King here or maybe just King/Ruler of Winterfell (who knows) there is a lot of build up and I wouldn't be mad. I really love the lore and stories

I burst out laughing when you said you threw the book across the room after what happened to Ned Stark, because I did the same. Great list, I don't care too much about Rob Stark and Jorah Mormont and I'd put Ser Barristan Selmy on it. Otherwise it's pretty much the same list for me. Also, team Stannis! I think he would have to spend his life to beat down rebellions but he is the true king.

I've loved ASOIAF and never found any other series that live up to that (just finished first law and yes it's really good but sorry nowhere near), is malazan as good as asoiaf?
@calebmauer1751
@calebmauer1751 3 жыл бұрын
I'm nine books in to Malazan (plus some side books) and I'd say no, it's not as good. Malazan has lots of god, wizards, magic everywhere, so it goes in the complete opposite direction from ASOIAF, so it lacks that like well grounded feel of ASOIAF. You just never know when magic is going to swoop in and solve everything out of nowhere. That said, Malazan has many great characters and some great dialog as well, so I'd still read it if you liked ASOIAF. ASOIAF is the king at what it does and it doesn't look like anyone's going to overthrow it any time soon.

Btw, Blackfish appears in Feast for Crows. Jaime talks to him in the Riverlands hoping for peace but Blackfish basically tells Jaime to shove his peace up his ass and mocks him by calling him Kingslayer.
