Idk if you read a book called The Last Green valley but if you dont you are doing yourself a hugeeee disservice. The fact that I dont see many reviews on it. The book is simply mindblowing and surreal and will change your life. Read this and bring it to the top of your list and than thank me later. Your last 2024 video of best books of 2024 it will be at the top!😊

I’ve read fight club twice, it’s great i have two other chuck P books but have not read them. I keep seeing either he’s the worst or the best writer. But fight club is a great great book

I first read The Stand in 1985, the original, 800-page edition published in 1978. In 1990 they finally released the restored, author's preferred edition you find on any bookstore shelf these days. I can't say the restored edition is that much better. It's four hundred pages and about 150 thousand words longer, but not four hundred pages and 150 thousand words better. The original editor had the right idea.

how many here have read Cities In Flight by James Blish?

Well it's almost 2025 and I don't care either. ADwD was a huge dropoff for me. Book 4 was a drop from the first 3. The first 3 books were as good as any fiction I've ever read. But GRRM is in Rothfuss territory now. I don't care that it's not finished, and I probably won't read the books if they are ever finished.

Outlander!! Haha you’re going to kick me off your channel. Maybe you could stick it halfway in between world without end and column of fire. And it is actually a fantasy. Anyway great picks and thanks for continuing to inspire me to read more; the last year has been full of fun discoveries thanks to you.

It's still a lot better than Best Served Cold. At least it wasn't so predictable.

I use audio books when I'm tackling really big books so I can finish them a little faster. I'm reading The Power Broker by Robert Caro which is 750,000+ words so I can always get an extra hour or 2 in while driving or walking while still reading the physical book when I can. I stick to my Kindle or physical books for more normal sized books. Audiobooks are expensive. I'd hate to have to buy all the stuff I read in audiobook form.

Oooooh yes!!! I am so excited for you to dive into Dandelion Dynasty. However you feel about book 1 though, PLEASE do yourself a favour and read at least the first 25% of book 2 as well because that is where the GoT comparisons come true and where you will definitely be able to determine whether the series is for you. Also, really hope you enjoy Tide Child, Barker is one of my personal faves! Happy reading, Mike!

Pretty bad that soiaf’s show was sooooooo much better than the books except for the end. My wife even read them and she’s a huge classical reader, liked the first 3 but the last 2 meh.

Besides Severo, Ragnar is my favorite side character. You called Eloran Lorne to Christopher Ruochiio?! How dare?!😂 I can definitely see the comparison to him in the early sun eater books. I love that character.

One Author that started as self-published and became successful enough to start his own indie publishing company is Michael Anderle. His flagship series The Kurtherian Gambit is a very good, genre-crossing series. And one thing that is pretty cool is that he opened up his universe to other authors to write their own stories in it, which led to dozens of series and hundreds of books in that world. I highly recommend that you read at least The Kurtherian Gambit. It begins as urban fantasy, but then later transitions into a sci-fi/space opera/fantasy.

thanks, Mike! I have enjoyed watching your Malazan videos after reading each book and I was about to quit after the fourth one, sharing most of your thoughts on it, but now watching this video, I'm determined to continue atleast with 1 more book.

The Alex Verus series is very good but it does grow slowly , so the first two books are kind of easy going but then it starts to get quite dark and brutal, much more so then Dresden Files . If you read them like the Dresden files as a in-between book then you will love them .

Fantisseurs? A word I made up, taken from connoisseur. Fantasist is a word - with negative connotations. People who can't distinguish fantasy from reality.

Hadrian is my favorite protagonist as of book 4. He was instantly in the top 5 and moved up with each book. I love his melodramatic moments, his references and the sheer brotherhood vibes that pop up. Pallino is one of my favorite side characters as well. As a vet I always love a well written veteran in scifi or fantasy. Great vid!

I know this video is a little old, but I just wanted to type out my thoughts somewhere lol. I like Kvothe as a character I think, but it's very hard for me to pin down why. I do think he's a Gary Sue, but for me I see that as almost the point of the story. Maybe not the point, but something to be expected. We're seeing the backstory of a legend, someone who gets stories told about him around the world. I would say that he is definitely not "human" so to speak. He is a genius creatively, logically, and almost every other way I can think of. I can definitely see why people will hate on him for being practically perfect and smug about it, but it works and makes sense to me. I'm not involved with the fandom at all so I don't know if this is a common theory or debunked or something, but I've always assumed that he has a "knack" for learning things. If I remember correctly, some people in the world just have knacks, like the one guy from his troupe who could always roll 7's. So when I'm reading and see him learn something supernaturally quick, it makes sense in world for me. Also I do know that he has some things that he has trouble learning or gives up on them, but I also just assume that's because he doesn't have much of an interest in them. For character flaws, I would say he has two minor ones. A dangerous sense of curiosity and overconfidence. I know that these don't lead to many problems for him in the long run, but I do think that for someone who learns super quick, it makes sense that these would be his main two. I guess my point is that I went into the book expecting to hear the backstory of a legend and that's what I got. I probably haven't read enough good books to expect something different, but I think the story does what it sets out to do and follows the rules of the world. It is also possible that I'm just too young and like characters who seem cool lol.

As of right now I've got: The Cursed Kingdom trilogy by Emily Gee The Licanius trilogy (it is happening in January!!) Continuing with Dresden files, Malazan and Sigma Force by James Rollins I might try to fit in the Tide Child trilogy as well

To think how much wasted potential there is in disney star wars. Like seriously. It might sound arrogant but i wouldve done so much better at the helm of lucasfilm and so would most of you. Ive given it a lot of thought even down to who i would hire for my projects down to the soundtrack, writing etc.

I hope you love The Gray Bastards as much as I did, or it lives up to your hopes. If you arrange read-alongs for "Gunmetal Gods," "Echoes," or "Riyria," I will be there for sure. Those are all on my 2025 plans, either returning to or starting.

Great review. I love the books that you recommend. I have one issue though. I'm halfway though. One needs to have read the Farseer Trilogy to be able to fully comprehend what is happening in the liveship Trilogy. Im only halway through Mad Ship so I may be wrong...but i don't think so. I'll explain but from here on there will be spoilers: The amount of the use of the Skill in the Liveship Trilogy would escape people if they hadn't read the Farseer Trilogy. Windrow and Malta are especially strong in it but so are Kennit, Alphea and the liveships themselves. In addition, the dragon and the serpents all use the Skill. The story wouldn't make sense if you didn't know about the Skill...or it would be incomplete. Also the fact that the Fool (Amber) is taking a direct hand in the shaping of events would also be lost on the reader if they hadn't read the Farseer Trilogy.
