To be fair, the 8mm audio ain't that bad, I'm actually impressed and shocked all at once. I'm not too much of a film nerd though, lol
@ActuallyHoudini10 ай бұрын
@@justsomerandomgamer He used a cassette to record audio, not the film itself although there are ways and means of recording onto film... Most of which isn't available anymore but there are still stuff in the modern era. There was 8mm film that the average consumer could buy which had a magnetic strip on it that recorded the audio alongside exposing the film. The use of magnetic tape to playback audio on film wasn't just for home movies, but major blockbusters like the original Oklahoma which was shot and projectes on 65mm film. Magnetic tape was and sometimes still is used when editing reels of film, but the magnetic tape is seperate to the film itself in the editing room but are synced using either a Moviola or Steenbeck. However, the most commen version of sound-on-film is something called optical sound. Optical sound is made by exposing a certain part of film to a wave of light that moves about in tandem with external noise, which records it. It's very similar to a record being made but instead of a stylus it's just light. Single-perf 16mm film, meaning 16mm film where it's only perforated on one side instead of both, was actually made for this type of set-up, however the cameras that can actually record onto film are rare and pricey with most being either in archives or private collectors. Many early indie films were shot on these types of cameras and they were also used in set-ups to record television before colour TV became popular and magnetic tape completely replaced them. Despite these machines being gone, the majority of 16mm film is still single-perf. Although most cinemas that still project film use high-quality audio DVDs that sync-up with the projector and the film inside of it, optical sound is still a commen part of film projection. This is because it makes old projectors more compatible with newer films. CPC Films in London, a company that prints new and old but remastered movie onto 35mm film, always adds an optical strip on all their prints as it can be compatible with older formats. Go check out their KZbin. Kodak still produces non-magnetic sound recording film that's pretty much designed to withstand nuclear war, so many archives use it to store almost everything from speeches to digital data. Film is a remarkable thing.

@@ActuallyHoudiniit's kinda insane the worl they do, it's like some kind of uncanny mixture of new and old media. The idea of seeing a really new, shot on high spec digital equipment movie on a grainy but still good 35mm print seems kinda appealing to me tbh. I mean i shoot my photography on digital cameras from 5 years ago and 35mm SLRs from the 70s so that tracks.

YES my good sir, that is why they invented Dark Rooms with their ominous red light bulbs - for processing film *out in the open*. Should've gotten yourself a VHS camrecorder for this vid and saved yourself all the trouble. X3 Why do I say this? Because I have one leftover from the old days; I can pop a VHS tape into it, record something, then pop the tape into my VCR to see the immediate results. Here's hoping your next video will feature this! ^_^
