I greatly enjoyed this, and therefore tried to trace its origins. I don't know if I succeeded, but it virtually the same as "The House of Fear" by W. Sapte, junior, which appeared under that name in CRAMPTON'S MAGAZINE in December, 1898. There are a number of textual revisions, and in particular, Sapte's "The House of Fear" is set in England rather than America. I am guessing you got this South Carolina version from THE WIMBOURNE BOOK OF VICTORIAN GHOST STORIES, vol. 21, which dates it to 1899. Going by the date alone, I guess the Sapte version is the original. I cannot trace the South Carolina version any earlier than the WIMBOURNE volume (published 2021), but that does not mean it does not exist.

I tried to add a link to "The House of Fear", but youtube deleted it. It can be found via "google books".

Thanks, WNS. Other channel is being shadow-banned. Loved the picture! And the story was great too. Just a few too many “sirs”. x) ;) X)
