+Portland Baroque Orchestra How dare you take one of the most impressive pieces of classical music ever written and change the lyrics to take account of a sporting victory. This is nothing short of sacrilege and, sad to say, typical of America and Americans to take something beautiful and cheapen it in this kind of way. There is even a "Harlem " jazz "version" of the Hallelujah Chorus on youtube. Why not go the whole hog and "arrange" Mozart's Requiem to celebrate some other US sporting achievement, or "adapt" a Beethoven Choral work, changing the lyrics to a Bob Dylan song. Do you hold nothing sacred in America? Sad...

Thank you for your comment - we want to hear from the public about our work. You might be interested to know that Handel himself reworked former secular pieces from his operas into Messiah (and other works too), changing the words dramatically. One example is a love duet - with very erotic lyrics - that eventually became "For unto us a child is born." kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKuun6x3aNari8U You can read about musical borrowing by composers here: taruskinchallenge.wordpress.com/2010/03/16/more-on-borrowing/

+Portland Baroque Orchestra But the example you give is of Handel reworking his OWN work, which he was entitled to do. My point is that you have taken a serious classical piece and cheapened it by changing lyrics to celebrate a sports team winning a championship. That is unacceptable. Like I said, what else? Tampering with other well-known and loved composers' works for fun? Shame on you all.
